Vehicle Detail

The car you are bidding on is a 1967 Mercury Cougar GT. It was originally equipped with the 390-4V GT engine and four speed Top Loader transmission, the top performance package for a Cougar that year. When I bought this car from the second owner in 2003 the original engine was not included; in fact there was no engine. The original Top Loader transmission and rear end were intact. I decided to upgrade the car’s performance with a freshly built 427, the best engine Ford made in the era when this car was new. The engine is a vintage 1964 high performance block with cross bolted mains and solid lifters. A 428CJ crankshaft was added which means that displacement is 455 cubic inches. The bore is .030” over stock at 4.264” and the stroke is 3.984”. Rods are 428CJ “C7” marked that were rebushed, resized, and equipped with new ARP bolts. Pistons are Arias forged flat top units custom built for this application. Piston rings are Childs and Albert plasma moly. The camshaft is a Comp Cams 294S solid lifter unit. Timing set is a Cloyes True Roller double sprocket degreed straight up. Pushrods are custom Smith Brothers high strength. Rocker arms and shafts are by Harland Sharp, using billet aluminum stands made by “Pumpbuilder” Doug. The intake manifold is an original Ford “Sidewinder” which was the factory intake on the 1966 – 67 SC427 Cobra roadster. The carburetor is a Barry Grant 850 Demon Double Pumper. Cylinder heads are ultra rare C8WE 6090-A heads that were an over the counter “cheater” head given to certain Super Stock racers back in the day. They are sort of a cross between Cobra Jet and Medium Riser heads, likely the best cast iron heads ever made that are legal for Super Stock. They were vatted, magnufluxed, milled, and treated to a multi angle valve job. Stainless steel one piece valves were installed in 2.15” / 1.66” diameters. The valves were back cut and hand lapped. Valve springs are Comp Cams, with new Comp Cams retainers and keepers. Positive valve seals were used on the new bronze valve guides. Headers are nickel plated FPA “Tri –Y” type. The exhaust system is mandrel bent 2 ½” from the collectors to the Flowmaster mufflers and out to the back of the car. Distributor is an original Ford unit with a MSD 6AL system added to provide maximum spark energy. The rev limiter is set to 6300. Oil pump is a blueprinted and safety wired unit from “Pumbuilder” Doug. A high strength reinforced oil pump drive was used. The oil pan is a deep 8 quart Milodon unit. The clutch is a McLeod unit, with Scheiffer SFI legal steel flywheel and Mcleod disc and throwout bearing. All of the clutch linkage parts were replaced with NOS (New Old Stock) parts during the restoration. The under dash pedal shafts had the bushings replaced with caged needle bearings using a kit from Scott Drake. As a result the clutch is silky smooth and easy on your leg. The body was restored using all of the original panels. This car spent most of its life in dry and windy Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was never rusty. The only rust repair needed during the restoration was a small section of the driver’s floor pan approximately 10” square. Paint is in the original color, Cardinal Red. This is a base / clear system done by Mt Healthy Auto Body in Cincinnati, Ohio. My camera does not do justice to it, you need to understand that it is a very good job, a 9 out of 10 or better. All bright work, emblems, stainless and chrome on the car is either NOS or restored original. The grilles, headlamp doors, and all emblems are NOS. If you know anything about 1967 Cougar parts at all you know this represents a lot of very difficult to find and expensive parts. The interior was in excellent original condition when I started. The front seats were recovered using custom sewn covers made with NOS (New old stock) Comfort Weave material from SMS fabrics. New underlayment and carpet was installed. The seat belts are new. Steering wheel is a wood Grant unit. The stereo is a Kenwood AM-FM CD player with 6X9 speakers in the rear deck. I have spent approximately $12,000 on the engine and $20,000 on the restoration of this car, not including what the car originally cost. It is a real sweetheart and I hate to sell it, but must due to a lack of garage space. Please call me 757-597-6969 9AM – 10PM Eastern time if you have any questions. International bidders, please plan to arrange a broker to handle the export and transportation. The car is in Newport News, Virginia which is a major rail and seaport. Payment will be by cash or wire transfer.
