This car is truly unique and one-of-a-kind. In 1973, there were only 136 Porsche 911 S cars built with Sportomatic gearboxes. How many were Targas? Who knows. Plus, this car came with a special color to match interior. This means, that you can really put whatever interior you want in the car. It is safe to say that there are probably no other early 911 like this.
The owner of this car is a very close friend and client of mine. I’ve sold many of his cars over the years and I must say that he does things right. He purchased this car a couple of years ago with the intent of restoring this car to a very cool sleeper. He spent an insane amount of money building an amazing 3.9L engine for the car with a custom 915 gearbox. He then proceeded to replace or restore everything mechanical on the car. The final stage in the process was to restore the cosmetics of the car and put a custom interior in the car. However, this goal was not completely realized. The owner sold the 3.9 motor and just finished having the numbers matching original “S” motor rebuilt and put back into the car.
When he purchased this car, it still had its original sportomatic gearbox installed and it worked great. Included with the car are all the original sportomatic parts in case anyone wants to reinstall it. The short time he drove it with the sportomatic, he raved about how nice it was to drive an early car without having to clutch…perfect for those long Monterey drives/early 911 rallies.
