Vehicle Detail

Introduction: Up for auction is a true piece of American history. This 1968 Mustang California Special is a highly documented 3 owner car that has a beautiful real American story revealing every year of it's life. Let's spend some time going back in history to track her steps of yesterday, as well as take a walk around her to see all she has to offer today. The Story: On May 13th, 1968 Jerry L. Sarquis drove his 1960 Ford Falcon sedan into Hartz Motor Co in Davis, CA, but what he would leave with would become one of the highest documented 1968 Mustang California Specials to exist. Jerry was given a mere $75 trade in allowance for his Falcon and happily drove his new Mustang into the sunset. The car resided in Osh Kosh, WI from new until November of 1970 when Jerry moved to Bryan, TX. The car lived in Texas until 1977 when he again moved to Middletown, OH. When Jerry moved to OH he hired a young man to maintain his lawn and landscaping, then in November of 1982, at 16 years of age, Dave Garrett bought Jerry's Mustang with the money he had saved mowing grass and other odd jobs. Dave drove the car through high school and college and in 1988 he completely restored the car back to how he remembered it as a child, and revoked its daily driver status. Dave religiously maintained and enjoyed the car, taking it to shows, parades, and cruises until October of this year, when he offered it to the public for sale. This entire story is documented through maintenance, registration, and warranty records over the past 42 years. The Documentation: Every piece of paperwork that has ever been associated with this car have been kept and maintained. Documents that track the car's history include but are not limited to the following: original window sticker, original vehicle purchase order, original Quality Care warranty booklet and owner card, vehicle registration receipts (1968 to present), hundreds of Ford service receipts (1968-present), hundreds of maintenance and parts receipts (1968-present), receipts documenting restoration of the late 80's, other items include magazines over the decades that have done stories on the California Special Mustang. Also included with the car or all of the parts ever removed or replaced over the vehicles existence. Exterior: Drenching all of the classic Mustang lines is the factory R code Highland Green Metallic. This car has had one repaint in 1988 and it still looks as good as it did then. The paint and body are in excellent condition with no rust, dents, or scratches. There are a couple of small nicks in the paint none larger than a Tic Tac, the have all been touched up with color matched paint and are not detectable. The CS graphics line up very nicely and bring the whole car together. All of the original Carlite glass in the car is in excellent condition without any chips, cracks, or discoloration. The windshield is the only piece that is not original. The chrome is in good condition there are some pieces that have already been replaced, and a few more could stand to be replaced, ie door handles, taillight bezels. The bumpers are the original bumpers and they were rechromed in 88 when the car underwent its restoration. Bumpers today look good, but are starting to haze very slightly. All of the lights work headlights, taillights, side markers, turn signals, reverse lights, turn signal indicators in the hood, and the Lucas fog lights. Interior: Open either door and step into vintage Mustang accommodations. Nearly every piece in the interior of this Mustang is original. This interior is in excellent condition just like the day she rolled off the line. The original black Crinkle vinyl seats are in excellent condition with no rips, tears, stains of any kind. The rest of the interior follows the same suit. There are no rips, tears, stains, cracks on the door panels, dash, headliner, carpet etc. The door panel chrome trim is starting to peal, but that is the worst of the interior. Every light, gauge, switch, etc functional perfectly with the exception of the original AM radio (lights up but no sound). The heater works, the wipers work, even the manual foot pump windshield washer pump works. The trunk looks a little gross due to the fact that the original mat is no longer in the car. There is a little surface rust on the passenger's side of the trunk well, but there is no structural damage to the trunk anywhere. The other stuff seen in the picture is a glue residue. The trunk deck lid still has the original jacking instructions and other warning decals in tact. Mechanical: Crack open the hood to expose the C code 289 2v. This V8 fires right up at the flick of the key and sounds great. I have not seen any drops of oil on my garage floor as of yet. I recently took this car on a road trip, I was able to cruise at about 65-70mph with no vibrations and got an unbelievable 18.9 miles per gallon. The three speed transmission shifts effortlessly without any grinding or slippage. Bringing everything to a halt is a breeze with the powerful hydraulic braking system. The steering is manual but it is not too bad to sling around. This car drives like a new car. There is no steering slop, it tracks nice and true down the road and absorbs bumps with the greatest of ease. The undercarriage is super solid without any rust. The original floor boards are in excellent condition and are very strong. The torque boxes, frame rails, and other structural supports are also rust free and strong. This car is a true survivor cruiser. It is an absolute blast to get out and bang through the gears on a curvy back road. As stated above the car is a highly documented thoroughbred as you can see from the pictures below. Also pictured below are all of the original parts that have been removed from the car over the years.
