Vehicle Detail
up for auction is an exceptionally well planned and built Meyers Manx style dune buggy, put together by legendary buggy builder, Clint Lehr, of York Pa. there are less than 1000 miles on the car since it's creation, and it is a turn-key toy, with ZERO work required to drive it or show it today. ill do my best to list the details, but i'm sure many will be forgotten. this car has been meticulously built, quite literally from the ground up, to my exact specifications, with no expense spared, over an almost 5 year period. i wanted a mostly era-correct (early to mid 70's) style buggy, with a few modern touches to make it more stable and road-worthy. that is exactly what i received. the chassis was treated with gloss black POR-15, and built with all new suspension components. every bushing, nut, bolt, axle, control arm, etc... EVERYTHING is new. nothing from the original car is used. all parts were powdercoated satin black, in most cases, or gloss black, for slight contrast, in others. chassis rear features an IRS conversion, flawlessly performed by a previous owner. this is a very serious undertaking, and it would cost A LOT to have someone do it. the handling characteristics are greatly improved with an IRS, in addition to the aesthetic benefit of reduced camber when lowered. the wheels dont tuck when cornering, which make a HUGE difference in a car like this. it's like driving a go-kart. front link pin beam is narrowed 3" and is height adjustable. front shocks are lowered units from EMPI. rear shocks are KYB gas adjustable. most suspension bushings are bright red urethane, with matching shiny red powdercoated brake calipers. i felt that this would add some much needed contrast under the car, and help to break up the BLACK underpinnings nicely. gas tank has been stripped and powdercoated gloss black. brake rotors are 5 X 4 3/4" "small chevy" bolt pattern. the balanced and blueprinted 1776cc engine was hand-built by Anibal Chico, of Chico Performance Racing (google him) with serpentine drive belt, and remote oil cooler. this engine has less than 1000 miles on it. it has just received it's 3rd oil change, a new set fo plugs, and has been broken in gently. dual solex 34s from EMPI have a balance tube installed, and are freshly jetted and synchronized. valves are recently adjusted. it is tuned, and ready to go, starting on the first crank of the key, and with no gas pedal fluttering to keep it going. it runs VERY smooth. the engine is built with VERY little flashy stuff, as i abhor chrome on an engine, almost as much as i hate billet. i went for flat black powdercoated engine tin, and cast/brushed aluminum, to brighten things up a tiny bit. the serpentine system is billet. (the only system available at the time) the rebuilt 4sp transmission, with stock gearing, was purchased from Peek Performance, and has less than 1000 miles on it. shifter is a vintage HURST, with trigger style reverse lock. the clutch is a SACO hydraulic unit, which eliminates the troublesome and clunky metal clutch cable setup. disc brakes are from CIP in canada. wheels are torq-thrust II, with 15 x 8" in the back, and 15 x 6" in the front. tires are 275/60 in back, and 195/60 in front, BF goodrich Radial T/A with raised white letters... (of course.) seats are vintage porsche 914 buckets, purchased from their original owner, who had them re-covered in the late 1970s, with brown velour corduroy. i couldnt have dreamed up a better match. they work PERFECTLY with the car, can slide forward and back, and are in excellent condition. there is one small tear in the headrest on the driver's side, which is pictured below. there are seatbelts, which are bolted through the pan, and secured by 1/2" grade-8 bolts and 3" diameter steel washers. i have a bit of the matching fabric from the front seats that i scored from the original owner, which i'll gladly toss in with the car... enough to nicely trim-out a rear seat, should a new owner desire. there is a black carpet installed, over 2 layers of dynamat. this car is by no means quiet at highway speeds, but this does make a big difference. all stock VW gauges occupy the dash. (voltmeter, oil pressure, and speedometer) steering wheel is a Grant wooden "GT" style. (im pretty sure thats what it's called anyway) windshield and frame/seal are all brand new. the polished stainless steel rollbar was purchased from Bruce Meyers. there are a few MOONEYES items tossed in, for a bit of hotrod flavor. floormats, barefoot gas pedal, license frames. i was thinking of maybe tossing a spun aluminum MOON tank in the back seat, at some point. or perhaps a little one on the front bumper would look neat. i'd probably keep it filled with apple juice or something though.. seems safer than strapping a bomb to the front of your car. the body was hand laid with reinforced fenders, by Steve Savage, of supersport buggy bodies. when deciding on a color, i wanted something obnoxious and sparkly, as well as a little odd and funky looking, so i decided on rootbeer brown, with 95% big brown metal flakes, and 5% silver. in the sun, this thing is ridiculous. the ONLY issues one might find with this car are the few small scratches on the body, from when i had my son's bike in the rear seat area, and it shifted around a bit. nothing major, but worth mentioning. regarding the original Meyers Manx fiberglass top, as shown above... i do still have it, however it sustained some minor damage from being improperly secured to the dune buggy. it lifted up at 25mph, and suffered two cracks on the fronts of what one would call the "C-pillars". it is certainly repairable, and i will include it with the car for an additional 200$, if the buyer desires. i'm sure there's a ton of stuff i'm forgetting, so i'll let the photos tell the story. if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. i'm available to show the car most days, and weather permitting, interested parties can come and drive it. On Oct-31-10 at 22:42:33 PDT, seller added the following information: i knew i'd forget a bunch of stuff.... the front suspension features drop spindles, which lower the car 3.5"... that, with the adjustable beam, and you can have this guy in the weeds. it's as low as it can go right now with no rubbing issues, but if you want to go lower, some narrower front tires should do the trick. there's a skid pan under the engine, which has been powdercoated black. i'll add more as i remember.. thanks for looking!
