Vehicle Detail
1978 Honda Hawk 400 Hello folks.. I have for sale a 1978 Honda Hawk 400. I purchased this bike with the thought of restoring it and giving it to one of my sons who had expressed interest in having a classic bike.. I have restored about 10 old bikes, mostly Hondas so do have some experience. In the restoration process I put on new mufflers as old ones were rusted through and a new high quality seat cover. Also new battery, clutch and brake levers and misc hardware. Tank and side covers were repainted and remainder of bike was touched up and polished. Bike was given a full tune up, balance chain was adjusted and carbs were rebuilt. I had to order second set of carbs as orig had cracked float overflow tubes (common prob w/ these bikes I guess). Just noticed today that one carb is dripping ever so slightly.. probably another slight crack developing in tube.. I did learn an easy fix that will share with buyer. Bike now starts with touch of starter button and runs fairly well. I does have some hesitation during acceleration. All electrics work including lights, starter, turn signals, horn, and brake lite. Gauges both register as they should. It doesn’t smoke and I just checked compression today.. 150 each side. Clutch is smooth and progressive and shifts into first and second like butter… third is sticky and needs to be coaxed – 4th and 5th are then fine. I have put on about 20 miles in past few days testing and it does seem to be improving. No guarantee, but I think with more miles and another oil change it will not be an issue. The tires are not new but have great tread and are not dry rotted. All the chrome is good to excellent save the head pipes which you can see I painted black. Bike has a clear, signed, undated title from previous owner. So why am I selling..?? My son has kind of lost interest in bikes as he just got engaged. And I have done what I can to address the hesitation without total success, although I don’t think it’s a big issue given the compression…. but let somebody else take if from here.. I am tired of working on this bike. I have described this bike as completely as possible but if you have any additional question just email. There is no warranty expressed or implied and I will not ship. I will be happy to help load.. but I would not recommend driving home unless you live very close. No reserve. A 200$ deposit is required within 48 hrs of auction end, remainder to be paid in cash at pickup within 14 days.
