Vehicle Detail
For Sale: 1984 Jeep CJ8 (Scrambler) 4x4 This is a special Jeep that was restored mostly in 2002 to be a daily driver and moderate trail runner. It has served its purpose well. Of course, like all good Jeeps, it has changed significantly over the years as modifications were made for more power, better street-ability, and more off-road prowess. You do know that JEEP stands for "Just empty every pocket", right? The modifications never end! If you aren't familiar with the CJ-8 Scrambler, they were made from 1981 - 1985 (some say 1986). They are basically a CJ-7 with about 10" more wheelbase and a longer body. Only approximately 27,000 of these were sold and they are relatively rare, or at least very uncommon. The extra inches of wheelbase makes them marginally better on the street than a CJ-7 or CJ-5. My grandfather bought this Jeep brand-new in 1984. He died in 1985 and my Dad used it on the farm in Missouri until 2002, by which time the body did what all good Jeep bodies do in MO, rust to the point of no return. In 2002, I tore it down to the frame and axles and began a restoration that was focused on bringing the Scrambler back to daily driver status, while leaning towards moderate trail use in Colorado. You can see before/during/after pictures of the restoration at http://scrambler.stormloader.com. When I still lived in eastern MO, I drove this Jeep to CO a few times over the summers of 2003, 2004, and 2005 to come out and do some sight-seeing, camping, and mild trail use. I finally got a truck and trailer capable of towing it in 2006, so it was trailered out to CO in 2006 and 2007. I moved to CO in early 2008 and the Jeep and I have been in CO full-time since then. This Jeep is capable for most moderate trails in Colorado and it has been on a lot of them. Again, lots of pictures at http://scrambler.stormloader.com. My wife and I are not hard-core trail runners. We are usually just seeking out spectacular views, wildlife, and good camping spots. This Jeep has serious clearance, though, and is definitely more capable than I am willing to try. Why am I selling? Well, I've also got a 2007 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. The factory warranty is about to run out on it and I would like to start modifying it. In order to do that, I need to free up some $$. I've decided to let the Scrambler go. Also, by checking my oil change records, I see that I've put a grand total of about 850 miles on this Jeep in the last 2 years. That's a real shame. Unfortunately, my work has me traveling a lot more than I used to and I'm finding it hard to find time for fun. I'm not kidding myself into thinking that when you restore a vehicle like this, that you are going to get anything near the money that you've put into it. I shudder to think of what the total might be if I added up the receipts. I'm pretty sure the total would be close to $20k and that is without the hundreds, if not thousands, of hours of labor that I have put into it for free. If you paid someone to do it, it would easily top $40k. Don't forget to visit http://scrambler.stormloader.com for an idea of what has went into this Jeep... The Jeep is located near Lyons, CO under a cover in my fully-enclosed concrete-floored shop. If you have any questions or are interested in viewing the Jeep, please shoot me an email via Ebay's email feature and we can setup a time for you to take a look. If you include your phone number, I would be happy to give you a call to discuss. I didn't want to include my phone number here for fear that it would get picked up and put on 1000 sales call lists (or worse). For serious buyers, I'd be willing to drive it in a reasonable radius around Lyons, CO to meet you, but I won't consider shipping it at this time Local buyers recommended. Jeep has 115,000 miles on body/frame. Engine/transmission/transfer case have about 26,000 miles since rebuild. Thanks, Chris Bryant
