Vehicle Detail

1989 Volkswagen Vanagon GL Wolfsburg Limited Edition 4-speed manual Original 2.1L engine (new heads) Weekender Package (fold-out table, removable jump seats, seat converts to bed, extra interior light) Relisting this from my auction in early July that ended with Buy It Now, but buyer was not responsive. I've been on vacation the past couple weeks so I could not re-list until now. This time I'm making it a straight auction with NO RESERVE! This model has a rear seat that seats 3 or folds into a bed. It also has a hinged fold-out table on the interior side and 2 removable or foldable rear-facing seats. Even an extra florescent light in the back. Very flexible! I love this design! Great for simple camping trips or days at the beach. You can get information on this 1989 model here. I've decided to sell because I have kids that are going to be in carseats for a while longer and the rear non-retracting 1980's seatbelts don't work too well with carseats. Once the kids are done with carseats I'll probably get another Vanagon. Such a great vehicle. The odometer shows 187k miles which is what I put in the listing details, but it is not working (all other gauges work). I would estimate about 200k on the chassis. I have a carfax report from last year which shows a mileage increase between 2005 and 2007, so the odometer seems to have stopped around that time frame. I've owned it a year and have only put a couple thousand on it. The person I bought it from used it lightly as well, so I think 200k is a conservative estimate. The engine had new heads installed by the previous owner, I'm told. No receipts for this; a mechanic owned it and apparently did it himself. It has great compression according to Bela, the local Burbank VW mechanic guru. Indeed I've driven a few Vanagons and this one has some pep to it. Stock 2.1L engine. I've got some receipts of some work done by Bela, too, going back the past couple years. Nothing major, mainly some work done last year on the catalytic converter and fuel system to make it pass smog. Cooling system works great... never any high readings on the temp gauge and the electric fan kicks in when it should (mainly just when you're in stop and go traffic on a hot day). Power steering seems fine and steering is tight. Suspension must have had some work done at some point because this is not a 200k mile suspension. It feels really good. Transmission works great with no noises and clutch shifts smooth and easy with a good release point. The 2nd gear synchro is getting worn out though -- if you shift into 2nd gear too fast, it grinds a little bit. If you shift nice and easy it is fine. I got used to it after owning it for a day or two. Exhaust is a little louder than what a stock Vanagon should probably sound like. I actually like the tone of the exhaust, but just want to mention it (I am doing my best to tell you everything I can think of about this van). It's not "loud" (like obnoxious) at all, just not super quiet. Not sure if it's aftermarket exhaust or if it's just old. I have a theory that the van is getting a few more horsepower from the slightly more open exhaust, but I don't know -- I haven't looked at it in detail. There is a very small crack in the windshield. Looks like a rock hit it. It's towards the bottom center, not very noticeable. It is about an inch long and has not increased in size since I bought it. The van IS SMOGGED 6/24/2010. Good for 90 days. I can't tell you how many VWs I've seen where the seller doesn't bother to smog it. I've got it all ready to go for you. Ready to transfer to new California owner. Out of state buyers, California smog doesn't matter but I think it does show that the engine is running properly. Brakes feel great, tires are in average condition with plenty of life left. Interior is in very good condition. The carpet could probably use a deep shampoo, but it isn't bad and everything else is in very good shape. It is missing a few rear cupholders and a cover on the fluorescent light. The dash has no cracks and everything is there. No rips or stains in the seats. All rear headrests included. No rear heater. Hoses are there but heater assembly has been removed. Front heater and fan, defrost, etc. work great. No radio -- I had a really nice JVC deck in it with iPod control but I'm keeping that. I put in nice new front speakers though and I'll leave those installed (stock size and location). All wires are right there labeled, easy install yourself or for a pro. I even ran a wire so the radio powers on/off according to whether key is physically in the ignition (similar to a modern car's radio behavior). This model originally had a factory subwoofer in the interior side panel, too, but that's been removed at some point in the past. A cool one-year-only option though if you wanted to put a sub back in that spot. The wiring is still there as far as I can tell. This van also has RARE working power windows! The passenger side switch sometimes does not work. Right now it is not working. Loose connection somewhere. It's a switch problem, not a window motor/regulator issue -- the passenger window raises and lowers perfectly from the drivers master switch. Power side mirrors, too, which work. Blue paint, original color. The paint's got some scratches and the body has some dings. Nothing too major... certainly no "major scratches" or "major dents" but not pristine by any means. From other Vanagons I've seen, I'd call it average. Paint on the roof is oxidized from the California sun. The fiberglass bumpers need to be repainted. Not sure why, but as you can see from the pictures they have some discoloration splotches. The van is setup with A/C but no compressor. Previous owner took it out, not sure why. All hoses and controls are there, though, so you should be able to put a compressor back in if you wish pretty easily (with the new refrigerant while you're at it). Tinted rear windows, aftermarket I think. This is nice to have since it keeps the interior much cooler and gives you some privacy (when camping, or changing at the beach, etc.). Comes with an original VW key that fits ALL locks: ignition, doors, rear hatch, and even gas cap. California registration until April 2011. Clean California title in my name. It's an original CA van but I saw in the old title that it had vanity plates, which is why the plates on it are from the past few years rather than original '89 plates. Carfax backs up the California history. Van seems to be originally from Ojai, CA. Feel free to contact me with questions. You are welcome to come check out the van or take a test drive. I'm in zip 91501. This vehicle will be offered for sale locally and I reserve the right to end the auction at any time if I sell it to a local buyer. Vehicle must be picked up by 8/16/2010! Please do not bid if you don't think you can complete the transaction by this date. Yes, you can drive it home locally in California. It runs fine. Will it make it across the country? Based on what I've seen, it should, but obviously this is sold as-is with no guarantees. I am also open to shipping the van, but you need to make all arrangements and have the van picked up at my house. This vehicle is sold AS-IS with no guarantees whatsoever. Your bid is a binding contract. A $300 deposit is due within 48 hours of auction end via cash or PayPal. Local buyers must pay the balance due in cash. If you are shipping the van, wire transfer payment is acceptable. You can view pics directly on Flickr here. On Aug-07-10 at 14:18:22 PDT, seller added the following information: I wanted to let potential bidders know that I will be out of town from Monday night 8/9 through Thursday 8/12. So the VW would need to be picked up before or after these days. As a result I'll extend the transaction deadline to 8/21.
