Vehicle Detail
1963 Corvair Monza 4 door, automatic transmission, 145 C.I., 102 HP. Engine. The high bidder on the first auction for this car refused to communicate and refused to pay, so here we go again... As you can see from the pictures, it has lots of surface rust and dents. The glass is good except for some light wiper scratches on the windshield. The car runs good and has tight steering. The Rat Rod guys pay $60-$100 just for a Corvair steering box. The engine looks ugly in the photos but it runs. It doesn’t noticeably smoke out the tailpipe, but it is obvious that the outer push rod tube O-rings are leaking oil onto the exhaust manifold. You Corvair guys know exactly what I’m talking about. There is definitely a need for a gasket set in this car’s future. The brakes seem to work well. The rubber sections of the fuel line are dried out, cracked and leaking. I added some transmission fluid back in '07, but not since. The little car runs, drives and has potential. Odometer shows just under 3000 miles, 103000 would be more believable. My intent was to use this car as a donor car for a dune buggy body or possibly a sand rail type vehicle, I just don't have the spare time for another project. I have clear title in my name and that is perfect for a donor car. The front suspension and rear suspension both unbolt and come out pretty much as a single unit each. It wouldn’t be much of a challenge for talented welder/fabricator to create a chassis to accept a body originally intended for a VW pan. The little car is pretty much complete except for all of the door latches and the rear window regulators that are not included. I needed those for a FiberFab Avenger project I’m working on and they wouldn’t be needed on the dune buggy project anyway. The stock Corvair instrument cluster would fit easily on a flat dune buggy dash. The 4 tires on the ground all hold air. The rear tires are pretty good studded snow tires (imagine that, studded snow tires in Colorado) one of the front tires is bald the other has tread and all are airtight. The upholstery is dried and cracked with the stuffing showing, but I presume that the front bucket seats could be restuffed and recovered for dune buggy use. The battery holds a charge and will start the car. I ran the car for about 15 minutes on June 5, 2010 (gas can hanging on the back bumper, rubber hose stuck into the can). I will sell to anyone, but I would prefer a buyer who is going to build a car out of this and not just part it out. I would love to see this end up as a kit car. I’m starting the bidding low and without a reserve, if it gets a bid, it gets a new home (assuming the high bidder actually pays for the car). Sold as it is and where it is in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.
