Vehicle Detail
Wow! When is the last time you saw an original, unmodified, unmolested Ruby Red 1967 Bug for sale at an affordable price? There aren't many of these left. Original down to the AM radio (which works). Correct (H0) 1500 engine. Shows 71,317 miles, and while I can't prove it hasn't been around the clock, I believe that to be actual miles. I am the fourth owner since new, purchased in 2007. Previously owned by an elderly gentleman who had owned it since about 1985 and apparently drove it very little. I believe this car was purchased new in Mason City, Iowa since it still has the dealer decal on the engine lid. A Midwest car but with a decent body overall. Some rust in parts of floorpan (area under driver's side rear seems soft and sags a bit when you step on it but no holes that I have seen), in front of the rear wheels (that spot where they all rust), and the bottom of quarter panels, but the rust in the quarters appears to be confined to the bottom. Driver's side rocker panel has some rust below the rear part of the driver's door, probably where salty water collected during the early part of this car's life when it was used in winter. Otherwise, very straight. Definitely not a bondo filled rust bucket. Doors open/close properly and do not sag. All of the body appears to be original except the rear passenger side fender, which the previous owner had to replace after hitting something. There is a small dent in the front hood near the bumper and a smaller dent on the driver's door. There are places where I have applied primer to scratches, especially on the front passenger side fender. All ready for touch-up paint, or maybe you'll want to repaint the car. Front apron/spare tire well and rear apron are fine. Original running boards are weathered and one side is missing the chrome molding, but they are there. Part of the car has been repainted (I believe this was done to blend in with the replacement rear fender) but other parts still have the original (and weak) paint. Rear taillight housings are obviously not original, they need to be painted. Still has original Ruby Red paint code under the hood. Driver's side rear fender has quite a bit of surface rust, but metal appears OK. Chrome is pretty dull but not badly pitted or rusted. Bumpers are pretty straight and not rusted. Would need some body/paint work to be a show car, but as Midwestern bugs go this one is about as good as you'll find for an unrestored car. 1500 engine starts easily and runs very well. This Bug is zippy and has so much power and gets up to speed so easily that I can't understand why they were called slug-bugs! It does drip oil (ever met a Bug that didn't?), my mechanic thought the rear main seal may be getting weak and suggested adding a quart of main seal repair. I haven't done that but I have a quart you can have with the car. Transmission shifts fine and does not pop out of any gear. This car drives very, very well. Steering is light and direct, car does not drift to one side, and even under hard braking stays pretty straight. Braking system was completely replaced a few years before I purchased it. Will cruise at 65-70 mph easily and with confidence, no funny noises or vibrations. In the almost three years I have owned it, I've put on 4 new matching tires, a new muffler and tailpipes, and a new rear wheel bearing, and had the carb rebuilt. I've also only put on 1,000 miles...the car had 70K on it when I bought it! This Bug has been garaged 99% of the time since I've owned it, and I believe it was garaged about that much by the previous owner as well. Here's good news: all the hard-to-impossible to find one-year-only 1967 parts are there. That includes: door handles, dash knobs, window cranks, front fenders, engine lid, and rear bumper mounted back-up lights. The interior is a lot like the exterior: complete, original, unmodified, and decent, but weathered. Headliner is fair, has one big hole in it. Original carpet is good in spots up high, ratty in the lower parts near the floor. Seat upholstery is not bad overall, but there are spots where you can see wear. Same for the door panels and rear seat side panels. The driver's seat definitely needs new padding. It's not uncomfortable but doesn't have the firm feel a VW seat should have and you sink down a bit in it. Other odds and ends...The steering wheel is in pretty good shape for its age. No big cracks or chunks that have fallen out. It seems like all of these cars have a broken horn ring...not this one! The horn ring is there and in good shape. I believe it needs a turn signal bulb on the rear passenger side. All other lights work. Windshield wipers...I only tried them once, they worked slowly on one speed but not at all on the second speed. Heater actually works! Gets good heat up the passenger channel but not the driver's side. A mechanic said this was because the driver's side heat control was stuck on off or closed, so I believe this is the case as opposed to a bad heat channel, but I'm not positive since I'm not a body man. Horn works. Has original 1967 VW lap belt seat belts in front with the chrome ring in the middle. Original but very weathered owner's manual in the glove compartment. Battery appears newer but I don't know the age. Comes with two keys, one of which is the original VW key! Reason for selling: expecting a baby in September and it's time to part with my toys and need the garage space for a daily driver. This Bug is an excellent candidate for a restoration, but is also fully enjoyable as-is: even in its original unrestored question it still turns heads and generates questions and conversation when it's out and about. I will be happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability. Transportation/shipping is the winning bidder's responsibility. I would like this Bug to go to a good home, please.
