For the auto enthusiast and discriminating collector is this beautiful, nearly perfect, 1988 Jaguar XJS / H&E Convertible with only 43K miles. The Jaguar XJS Convertible by Hess & Eisenhardt was announced at the Jaguar New Jersey headquarters on Oct 29th 1986, and became available on special order thru US Jaguar dealers. Only 2,100 vehicles of this historic model were produced between 1986 and 1988. The XJS H&E was designed in an era that never expected to see a convertible again; they were expected to be outlawed for safety reasons. For many years, the only way to get an XJS convertible was to hire one of many aftermarket customizing outfits to cut the top off your coupe. By the mid-80's the expected ban on convertibles had failed to materialize and convertibles were making a comeback, so Jaguar responded by contracting with Hess & Eisenhardt in Cincinnati, Ohio, founded in 1876, and rated as America’s leading coachbuilders, to make convertibles to be sold at the Jaguar dealerships. After two years, the response had been so good that Jaguar began making its own convertibles at the factory, and continued until the end of XJS production. The Hess & Eisenhardt convertible differs from the later Jaguar convertible XJS as its unpadded, fully electrically operated top, folds down deeper into the body structure of the car, resulting in a cleaner rear profile when the top is lowered, and where concealed under the color coordinated cover, it would minimally disturb the cars smooth lines, thus creating the distinguished sleek and timeless design of this special, limited edition, Jag. The later Jaguar convertible had a heavier padded top that did not fold into as small of a bundle when in the lowered position. The vehicle is in superb condition overall. The V12 engine runs smoothly and sounds perfect. Transmission shifts smoothly, without any hesitation. The electric top operates flawlessly. The paint is in great shape. The chrome is excellent. There is no known rust on the vehicle. Some minor, easily serviceable imperfections include: a/c recharge needed, rear window defrost works intermittently, rear driver’s side window occasionally sticks, light cracks on center console's wood-veneer (normal wear for age). May benefit from sturdier front shocks, as the front tires sometimes rub upon sharp turns. This luxury cruiser’s price tag was in the upper 50’s when new and is destine to increase in value if well cared for. Not many are found this good. It is a real pleasure to drive.
