Vehicle Detail

THE CLASSIC CALIFORNIA 1966 VOLKSWAGEN BUS ! Made in Germany! (see the photo of the cool "badge" in the cab.........) Kombi, Type 2, Split Windscreen version in great condition. Semi-restored (see description below). I have decided to sell my '66 so that I can complete restoration on my '69. I have owned this bus for nearly 2 years. Purchased in LA, Driven to SF (up the Pacific Coast Highway), trailered to Tahoe, Waiting for YOU ! All original transfer boxes, engine, transmission. Serviced by Bugformance in Sunnyvale, CA to bring it up to my specs for daily driving. Great torque, smooth shifting, solid steering and braking. No performance issues (unless, of course you want to do 70 MPH all day and pass everybody!). Service records and invoices on hand. I also include an original Chilton's repair manual, published in 1968, which covers 1949-68 Volkswagens and has cool plastic overlay diagrams in the middle. First, "issues": 1.Only ONE area of rust beneath the passenger side floor mat; determined to have been caused by a leaking windshield seal. Probably took YEARS for this to happen. Rust is through the metal in an area of about the size of a coin slot in a vending machine. I have included photos from above and below. A little patching material, put the floor mat back, and forget it. Unless you want to replace it with a metal patch or get new floor panels installed. REMEDY: Replaced windshield rubber seals. No more water, no more rust ! I will clean and prime this area prior to delivery, but since everyone has a preference on repair methods, I leave that to your discretion. 2. Rear area floor was covered in plywood and carpet when I got the bus. I took these out and cleaned the entire area, removing the seats and discovering numerous intentional holes in the floor - maybe from camping gear, alternate seating; I don't know. All minor, no rust; easy to repair. Again, individual preferences for flooring material vary, so I'm leaving it up to the new owner. 3. Window rubber needs replacement. All of it except the windshield and rear hatch, which have already been done. 4. No headliner in the rear; these models came stock this way. I would insulate and install the proper headliner, which can be purchased for less than $200.00. 5. One window latch is missing, one has lost it's mounting hardware and needs spot welding. I have the part. The latches are available. 6. There is ONE dent at the rear behind the bumper. It's in the photos. About 5" across and 1/2" deep. It is roundish, it was there when I bought the bus. There are American stye heavy duty bumpers front and rear, I estimate $225.00 to fix this dent, unless you do it yourself. 7.Normal wear on the interior components; seats, seat belts (lap belts), dash area, interior panels. Vinyl is in really good shape, a couple of small tears on the seat which I repaired. The Good News: I have had the following work done already: Replaced tie rods and drag link; steering box, windshield and cargo hatch seals, installed new heater boxes and hoses and miscellaneous components (it gets nice and cozy in there); new speedometer cable & clips; wiper blades, tune up; valve adjustment and brake bleeding and adjustment; hard start relay installed - (starts right up); headlight bulbs; intake boots; adjusted clutch; removed stickers and adhesive on the interior, new "elephant ear" side view mirrors. The Better News: I have driven this bus in Santa Cruz County and around the mountains of the Sierra range near Lake Tahoe. It GOES all day and then some. My wife even drove it recently and HAD FUN !!! The gauges all work, the lights all work, it passes smog, I have the title, and the registration fees are $56 a year in CA. The emergency brake works, the gas "key" is in the dash, and if I had more patience I would keep this or finish the restoration myself. The tires are nearly new, all the necessary parts are available and it's FUN ! 12 Volt electrical system; compression test done @ 125 lbs per cylinder, front end alignment done ! In my opinion, it needs a little more attention to complete the restoration. How much is up to you. Mostly cosmetic; I would insulate/sound deaden behind the interior panels and headliner. Install a proper headliner. May be new paint someday in and out. Did I mention this is a "walk-thru"? You don't have to stop and get out to get in and out of the back seats. The upgrade options are numerous - roof rack, "jail bar" window rails, chrome trim, whitewalls, camper conversion............ This bus is as solid as they come; I would keep it, but my daughter says I look like a "gaint" driving it, so I'm keeping my '69 and offering this to be loved and used by someone else. Did I mention how much FUN it is to own this? I will deliver it to the Reno/Tahoe area for free via rental trailer. We can arrange other transportation as needed.
