This Corvette looks fantastic, runs great, and is an excellent driver. The car is totally solid with nice lines and absolutely no rust issues. The Black (19) over Red Leather (722) is a very rare and beautiful color combination that looks great on the car. This is also the correct an original color scheme, verified by the codes on the trim tag, which is pictured below. The car is loaded with desirable options as one can see in the extensive list of RPO codes above such as the N90 Aluminum wheels, tilt wheel, sport mirrors, air conditioning that blows cold, and the highly desirable the color scheme. The low original mileage is verified not only by the condition of the car, but also the clear Ohio title, pictured below, showing the mileage as "Actual." Please peruse all of the photos, video, list of numbers, and other information below to get a true sense of how nice, clean, and original this Corvette really is. This Corvette is completely number matching. Almost every part we checked on the car was correct and original, even down to all the windows, carburetor, starter, and distributor. We have run the numbers on literally hundreds of C3 Corvettes and there are very few that are as correct as this one. There are photos below of the VIN stamp on the engine and transmission, engine assembly date, and transmission assembly date. As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle. We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their car to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did. We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected. Please take the time to scrutinize each picture. We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase. If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call. model description The Corvette evolution continues" announced the slogan from the 1979 Corvette sales catalog. The L48 engine received the dual-snorkel air intake introduced in 1978 for the optional L82 V-8, which added 10 horsepower. All Corvettes in 1979 now had the high-back bucket seats introduced on the 1978 limited-edition Indianapolis 500 Pace Car. A higher pivot point allowed the seat backrest fold more flat and level with the luggage area floor. which drastically improved access to the rear storage area. numbers Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly. item number description* VIN 1Z8789S420659 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM. The "Z" is the series, Corvette. The "87" is the body style, 2-door sport coupe. The fifth digit is the engine, 8, correct for an L48 car. The sixth digit, "9," indicates the model year, 1979. The "S" is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis. The last five digits are a sequence number so this is the 20,659th Corvette made for 1979. Body Build Date F26 "F" corresponds to January, and "26" is the twenty-sixth day of the month meaning this Corvette's body build date is January 26, 1979. Engine Code V0123 "V" means the engine was build in the Flint, MI plant. The "01" is the first month of year and the "23" is the twenty-third day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on January 23, 1979. This is correct as it precedes the build date of the car. This stamping was hard to read and pictured below. Suffix Code ZAH This means the motor was intended for a 1979 L48 Corvette with an automatic transmission, which is correct for this car. Engine VIN Stamp 420659 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 420659, are stamped on the engine pad and pictured below, meaning this engine is original to this car. Engine Block Casting Number 3970010 The engine block has the correct 3970010 casting number for a 1979 Corvette. Engine Block Casting Date A 17 9 "A" is January, "17" is the seventeenth day of the month, and "9" is the last digit of the calendar year so the engine block was cast on January 17, 1979. Intake Manifold Casting Number 14007376 The intake manifold has the correct 14007376 casting number. This intake was only used on Corvettes in 1979 Intake Manifold Casting Date L 6 8 "L" is December, "6" is the sixth day of the month, and "8" is the last digit of the calendar year so the intake manifold was cast on December 6, 1978. Carburetor 17059216 The original carburetor has the correct stamping for a 1979 L48 Corvette with an automatic transmission and a/c. The fourth digit, "5," means the carb was built in the 1976 - 1979 production run. The fifth digit, "9," means it was built for the 1979 model year. The six digit, "2," indicates that it is a 4BBL carb. The seventh digit, "1," means is was built for the Chevrolet division of GM. The last digit, "6," means it was intended for use in an automatic transmission car such as this. The car currently has a newer carburetor installed on the car, but the correct original carburetor is included with the car. Carburetor Date Code 0109 The firth three digits, "010," indicate the 10th day of the year. The last digit, "9," is the year in which the carburetor was produced, 1979. So this carburetor was stamped on January 10, 1979. Distributor 1103302 The distributor is original and correct for an L48 Corvette with an automatic transmission with a 1103302 stamping. This distributor was only on Corvettes with a ZAH suffix code, which this car has. Distributor Date Code 9A3 The "9" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "A" denotes January, and "3" is the third day of the month meaning the distributor was made on January 3, 1979. This is correct as it predates the assembly date of the engine. Starter 1109065 The starter is original and correct for a late build 1979 Corvette with an automatic transmission with a 1109065 stamping. Starter Date Code 9A11 The "9" is the last digit of the calendar year, the "A" denotes January, and the "11" is the eleventh day of the month meaning the starter was made on January 11, 1979. Transmission VIN Stamping 420659 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 420659, are stamped on the main case of the transmission and pictured below meaning this transmission is original to this car. Windshield VJ "V" is December and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in December of 1978. This is correct as it predates the build date of the car. Driver's Window CJ "V" is November and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in November of 1978. This is correct as it predates the build date of the car. Passenger Window VJ "V" is December and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in December of 1978. This is correct as it predates the build date of the car. Rear Window YJ "Y" is October and "J" is 1978 so this window is original, made in October of 1978. This is correct as it predates the build date of the car. *Most information obtained from Alan A. Colvin's Corvette by the Numbers and Mike Antonick's Corvette Black Book. condition Exterior The Black exterior is in great driver condition. As one can see in the photos the finish has a terrific gloss, deep shine, and smooth finish. Both doors open and shut nicely as do the hood and headlights and the car exhibits good body panel fit overall. The N90 aluminum wheels and center caps are in stunning condition with a brilliant smooth finish and no curb rash. The tires have 90% of tread left and are correct sized 225/70R15. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos below. There are some small blemishes and touch-ups around the car that may be too small to show up in the photos, but nothing else that is really noticeable from about five or ten feet away. As one can see in the many photos of the underside of the car, it is very clean and this Corvette has absolutely NO RUST ISSUES. We have included specific photos of the areas most prone to rust. The frame is totally solid with no rust around the "key hole" are in front of the rear tire and I have seen no evidence of corrosion around the windshield, which are the two most notorious spots for rust on a C3 Corvette. Window Date Codes Please note that ALL of the glass on this Corvette is date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of January 26, 1979 (F26). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage.. The car looks just as good in person as it does in the photos. Interior The Red Leather interior in this Corvette is in spectacular condition. The seats look almost brand new with no rips, splits, or excessive wear. The carpet is also in great condition with no stains or holes. This includes the rear carpet which is often sun faded or neglected. The gauge faces are crisp and clean and the lenses are clear. The door panels are in good shape and, unlike many Corvettes of this age, they fit well and tight to the door. The door pulls are solid and intact. The dash and console look awesome with no cracks or sun fading. The jack and jack handle are still with the car, stored correctly behind the passenger seat, and pictured below showing the original decals on the compartment lid. The original spare is still with the car and has never been used. This Corvette has never been smoked in; there are no burns marks and no aroma of cigarettes. Corvette interiors from this era are not known to wear well and the excellent condition of this interior is a huge testament to the meticulous care and attention this car has received throughout its life and another great verification of the low original mileage. The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos. Mechanical This Corvette seems to be in good mechanical condition. The car starts right away every time, runs well, and idle smooth. It drives great and feels nice on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, shifting through all the gears, braking to stoplight, and going through some curves. Please note that there are no strange noises or vibrations and the car performs quite well overall. There is no blue smoke when starting or driving the car. This Corvette has plenty of power and is quite fast. Also, the engine compartment is beautifully clean, detailed, correct and complete as one can see in the photos. Even the ignition shielding and original catalytic converter are still in place. The radio works as do all the exterior lights, horn, indicators, and wipers. All of the gauges work and even the clock runs. The blower works on all speeds and the a/c also works and blows cold. One can observe the a/c compressor clicking on and engaging properly in the video. The vacuum system for the headlights works correctly. Also, the headlights go up correctly with either the headlight switch or vacuum override switch. There complete operation form both switches can be viewed in the video below. The power locks work on the driver's side, but not on the passenger side. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with the T-tops out on a beautiful day. The car runs and drives as well as it looks. Overall Condition Overall, this 1979 Corvette is in magnificent driver condition. The originality, the low miles, the great options, the beautiful original color combination, and the great overall condition make this car especially important and hard to duplicate. Numbers matching is very important in the Corvette market and in Corvette pricing. This car is remarkably correct and original and there are photos below of the VIN stamp on the engine block, suffix code, engine assembly date, and transmission VIN stamp. This Corvette always gets a ton of attention driving down the road. It is apparent that the vehicle has been well taken care of by its previous owners. The prices of C3 Corvettes have increased considerably over the past several years. They are secure and wise investments for a collector. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.
