"There’s something special about driving a great Italian car in Italy. Maserati is aware of all this and seasons its automobiles accordingly. But it also knows it must think far beyond the boundaries of the Emilia-Romagna region if it wishes to increase volumes and remain a viable business entity in the future. To this end, the company is expanding the Quattroporte lineup to three semidistinct models: the standard edition, the Executive GT (a heavier quotient of luxury trimmings), and the Sport GT (self explanatory). Visuals differentiating the Sport GT include black mesh grillework, 20×8.5-inch wheels front, and 20×10.0-inch wheels out back. Inside, the standard wood trim gives way to genuine carbon-fiber trim panels. The exhaust system is retuned for a louder warble, and the suspension is recalibrated for better handling with only a miniscule degradation to the ride. The Sport-mode button on the console further tightens the damping and heightens the transaxle’s shifting response. Maserati CEO Karl-Heinz Kalbfell knows about product quality and has instituted several initiatives to up Maser’s game in this regard. The results are showing: We inspected several Sport GTs and found outstanding panel fit, lustrous finishing, sumptuous materials, and an absence of squeaks and rattles. The Quattroporte Sport GT now looks and feels like a $100K-plus car. The transmission has been improved a bunch. It’s further recalibrated for Sport GT duty, with shifts about 35 percent quicker than before. Driven mildly, it’s now quite smooth between gears. Driven like you were running a lap of the Mille Miglia, the shifts are fast and aggressive. Somewhere in the middle, it’s still possible to fool the trans into a lazy upshift, and downshifts in the automatic mode come with a lurch. But it is satisfying to play this instrument using the steering-wheel paddles, and the gearbox gives the driver an added measure of control and involvement. A few will appreciate this unique technology. Maser’s 4.2-liter V-8 delivers good low-end torque, revs to 7500 rpm, and sounds orchestral doing so. The suspension revisions and mondo rolling stock improve what was already class-leading handling. A 47/53-percent rear-biased weight distribution makes for superb balance. The Quattroporte’s front end bites hard, and its grip inspires confidence. The huge Brembo brakes deliver all the stopping power required. And why don’t other luxo-sedans have steering this communicative? There’s surprisingly little windnoise, making for easy conversation at 100 mph. And the Sport GT’s high-speed (as in 140-plus) stability is faultless. Trust us. The Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT is one of the most desirable full-size sedans on the market today.
