This Corvette looks fantastic, runs great, and is an excellent driver. It is totally solid with great lines and absolutely no rust issues. The Classic White (10) exterior over Dark Brown Leather (692) interior is one of the most attractive color combinations available for 1978. It is also the original color scheme as indicated by the trim tag pictured below. The 4-Speed manual transmission is also quite rare as almost 90% of Corvettes in 1978 came with the automatic. It also has the rarely optioned high performance Gymkhana Suspension. The very low original mileage is verified by not only by the condition of the car, but also the clear Ohio title, pictured below, showing the mileage as "Actual." Please peruse all of the photos, video, list of numbers, and other information below to get a true sense of clean, correct, and original this Corvette really is. This Corvette was sold new in 1978 at Camp Chevrolet in Chamblee, GA. It comes with a number of receipts for maintenance and repairs over the years that date back to 1979. Many of the receipts also have the mileage recorded on them. All of the recorded mileages are in correct order and are another great verification of the low original mileage. In addition to the receipts and maintenance records the car also comes with some of the original documentation including the original owners manual, consumer information booklet, Goodyear tire booklet, and the original battery booklet. This Corvette is completely "Numbers Matching." The last six digits of the VIN are stamped on the engine pad, which is pictured below, indicating that this is the original engine that was installed in the car at the factory in St. Louis. If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call. model description Chevrolet marked Corvette's 25th Anniversary in 1978 with the most extensive redesign of the car since the introduction of the C3 body style in 1968. The new Corvette introduced a large fastback style rear window that drastically increased luggage space in the rear compartment behind the seats. The interior of the 1978 was also significantly redesigned. The speedometer and tachometer were redesigned in a more square and vertical mode. A glove box was added on the passenger side to replace the pocket. The door panels were also completely new and included screw on arm rests to replace the molded style that been the standard since 1965. 1978 Corvettes featured special 25th Anniversary emblems specific to that year. numbers Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly. item number description* VIN 1Z87L8S429569 The first digit, "1," indicated the Chevrolet division of GM. Colvin's Corvette by the Numbers and Mike Antonick's Corvette Black Book. condition Exterior The Classic White exterior is in fantastic driver condition. As one can see in the photos, the paint has a dazzling gloss and deep shine. Both doors open and shut nicely. The wheels are in excellent condition with a brilliant finish and no curb rash. Also, please note that this car still has the correct and original 4-clip style beauty rings, not the cheap foreign made aftermarket replacements. The tires are correctly sized 225/70R15 and are literally brand new with less than 20 miles on them. According to the previous owner this Corvette has never been in any type of accident and has had on repaint in the correct original color. There are no major imperfections that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. There are some very small blemishes and very faint sanding lines that were too tiny to be picked up by the camera, but nothing that is really noticeable from about five or ten feet away. There are NO RUST ISSUES with this car and as one can see in the many photos of the underside it is very clean underneath, even some of the original chalk markings are still present. The frame is totally solid with no rust around the "key hole" area in front of the rear tire and there are no signs of corrosion around the windshield or "birdcage" area, which are the two most notorious areas for rust on a Corvette from this era. The car looks just as good in person as it does in the photos. Window Date Codes Please note that ALL of the glass on this Corvette, even the windshield, is date coded and original as each piece predates the car's body build date of June 6, 1978 (J06). Original glass is a good indication that this car has had no major accident history and never sustained significant damage. Interior The Dark Brown interior of the Corvette is in absolutely wonderful original condition. The seats look just in person as they do in the photos with no split seams, tears, or excessive wear. Please note that these are the original seats, not some cheap aftermarket covers or replacements. The carpet is also in great condition with no stains, rips, or holes. This includes the rear carpet, which is often neglected. The carpet is also original. The gauge faces are clean and crisp and the gauge lenses are crystal clear. The console and dash are in good condition with no fading, cracks, or sun damage. The original door panels are in nice shape overall. The door pulls are solid and intact. This car has not been smoked in and there no aroma of cigarettes whatsoever. The jack and jack handle are still present with the car and stowed correctly behind the passenger seat, pictured below showing the original stickers on the compartment lid. The original spare is also still with the car. Corvette interiors from this era are not known to wear well and the excellent condition of this all original interior is a huge testament to the meticulous care this car has received throughout its life and another great verification of the low mileage. The interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos. Mechanical This Corvette is in great mechanical condition and it is ready to be enjoyed. The car starts right away every time, runs well, and idles well. It drives terrifically and it is smooth on the road and at highway speeds. In the video below one can observe the car accelerating on the highway up to about 70mph, braking to stoplight, going through some curves, and shifting through all the gears. Please note that there are no vibrations and the car performs quite well overall. There is no blue smoke when starting or driving the car. The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other. The transmission shift well, does not pop out of gear, and the clutch feels good. This Corvette has plenty of power and is quite fast. Also, the engine compartment is beautifully clean, detailed, and correct as one can see in the photos. The horn work as do all the exterior lights, interior lights, turn signals, and wipers. The blower works on all speeds. The a/c works and blows cold. The entire vacuum system for the headlights works. Also, the headlights go up correctly with either the headlight switch on the dash or vacuum override switch. Their complete operation from both switches can be observed in the video. All of the gauges work with the obvious exception of the clock. The car now has a true dual exhaust system with no catalytic converter and a very healthy exhaust note as one can hear in the video. Not enough can be said as to how much of a pleasure it is to drive this car, especially with 4-Speed manual transmission, Gymkhana Suspension, and the T-tops out on a beautiful day. The car runs and drives as well as it looks. Overall Condition Overall, this 1978 Corvette is in excellent driver condition. Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing, and as one car see this car is very correct. Low mileage examples draw a huge premium over a standard Corvette. The originality, the extemely low miles, and the great extent to which the numbers match make this car especially important and hard to duplicate. This Corvette always gets a ton of attention driving down the road. It is apparent that the vehicle has been well taken care of by its previous owners. The prices of C3 Corvettes have increased drastically over the past several years. They are secure and wise investments for a collector. One could easily enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than the purchase price with minimal effort.
