Vehicle Detail
Up for auction is a 2004 Volkswagen R32, the MKIV. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the R32, this model has the 3.2 liter DOHC narrow angle V6 engine with variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust cams. It has a strong power band in the low and midrange rpms, blaring out a deep exhaust note that impresses indifferent standers-by and enthusiasts alike. A 6 speed manual transmission places the driver in control of everything about how this R32 gets to its destination, even if there isn't one. A low center of gravity, all wheel drive and Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP) maintains traction through hard cornering making it a joy to drive on winding roadways. Disabling the ESP will allow you to do whatever you want, where driver and R32 are one. In the time I have owned this R32, I have been undoing modifications made by previous owners. The engine, drivetrain and suspension are stock. Only intake filter, intake pipe, exhaust aft of the catalytic converter, engine mounts and rims are different than the factory (though it does have an aftermarket radio and not the original grille). Having that said, modifications to this R32 have been kept to a minimum, ensuring serviceability, longevity and lasting resale value for years to come or to serve as a blank slate for a new owner to customize. This R32 is free of check engine light codes but there is an airbag warning light throwing a code 00592, indicating a faulty passenger seat belt switch, a common problem remedied by replacing the seat belt receptacle. The engine is in great running order, fast starting, doesn't smoke, has lots of power and sounds amazing. Gears are easy to find as the linkage is in good shape. The clutch grabs well especially when there is a gap between actual speed and driver demand. The CV joints are quiet and there are no suspension noises (squeaks, clunks, etc..) that I can hear. There is a fair amount of body pitch on heavy braking, probably because the engine is so heavy up front and there's a moderate amount body roll on turns. Speaking of brakes, there's plenty of life remaining on the huge front disc pads, rears are in good shape too. Tires are 225/40ZR18 Continental Extreme Contact DWS (hey it snows in New Jersey) with plenty tread remaining. Aftermarket engine mounts transmit a fair amount of vibration to the passenger compartment so annoying interior rattles are common but controllable. Recently, clean rainwater has found its way into the spare tire well. I know this is recent because there is no rust in the spare tire well (not pictured). I sealed around the deleted wiper cap but that didn't fix the problem so it's most likely leaking from the tail lights as this is a common root cause. I have not made any more efforts to fix this problem. The passenger sidemarker light also shows signs of condensation but the turn signal light inside flashes as it should (not pictured). The stock leather seats are in good condition without bolster seam rips commonly found on this year model. You will appreciate how the seat and backrest bolsters hold your body in the corners. The non adjusting headrest is deliberately placed aft of the backrest probably because the test drivers were wearing helmets and this detail made its way into the final design. Also, the seat heaters are very effective. A non-smoking owner cared for this R32 as it was a tool for highway commuting. New R32s in 2004 were sold without a spare tire. I am including a non-matching rim and non-matching unmounted tire with the sale, both are in good shape for use as a spare (not pictured). Like any R32 of this age, there are signs of wear. Then you have 7 days to express mail me a certified check for the winning bid amount minus the PayPal deposit. Then I will immediately send you the title via USPS or UPS standard two-day delivery, signature required (Saturday or Sunday residential delivery might be a problem in your area, please be flexible about this). Then you will need to locate and pay for a shipper (west of the Hudson River) within a 50 mile radius of the R32's current location (07656). I am happy to deliver the R32 free-of-charge to your shipper, otherwise, plan on having the shipper pick it up. You will not be required to pay my eBay fees or my PayPal fees, only your own. You are responsible for your registration fee, title fees and taxes in your state. You will pay for any emissions check fees or taxes normally charged to the seller for proper transfer of the title in your state (I'm talking about you folks in California, among others). This R32 has passed inspection in New Jersey and would be valid if I continued to own it until March 2019. Local pickup is available if our schedules can align. This R32 is no longer being driven and delivered mileage will likely be what is shown in the photos plus driving distance to the shipper. Test drives will not be allowed. You might want to look around the on-line communities devoted to the R32. I am not going to post an alert about this auction on those sites so you are not bidding against experienced members of the community. This should allow you to become a member of the R32 club without having to compete with them. If you've read this far and are interested in bidding, please note the reserve on this auction is less than I paid for the R32 in 2014. I wish you luck bidding on this or any other R32 you desire. On Jul-01-18 at 10:57:52 PDT, seller added the following information: Also what's different from original:Driver's side and passenger side mirrors have been replaced or repainted by a previous owner. All up-down/left-right positioning servos work. Both mirrors fold into the body when sufficient pressure is applied. On Jul-02-18 at 08:35:03 PDT, seller added the following information: There are two types of sellers on eBay Motors: Those who reveal as little as possible, and those who reveal as much as possible. To go straight to a "reveal as much as possible" YouTube video, click here: https://youtu.be/jxKlzX0V_VE Buyers have been asking for information about what the underside of the R32 looks like. I am sure buyers have asked other sellers for this information but don't see the results in any listings. I believe buyers who don't get a satisfactory response to this question should consider these sellers to be the "reveal as little as possible" type. So, in responding to buyer questions about what the R32's underside looks like, I rolled the car up on ramps and began a photo session. In the process I discovered Neuspeed adjustable rear lower control arms installed by a previous owner. The manufacturer says they "determined the weaknesses of the original equipment lower rear control arm and has designed a more robust lower control arm that allows camber adjustment without control arm removal." Having all that said, I need to clarify my claim that there have been no suspension modifications to no suspension modifications have been made by me. The R32 still has great value to anyone wanting to further customize or just keep it as is. Also a claim is proven tin this video, the existence of a new OEM dual flex pipe. I hope the video proves satisfactory and encourages other buyers to ask the same from all sellers. To go to the "reveal as much as possible" video, click here: https://youtu.be/jxKlzX0V_VE
