Vehicle Detail
Beautiful VW Phaeton with 5-seater package and V8 transmission. Dealer maintained with many records. I purchased this Phaeton a few years ago from a couple in Texas who said they bought it off lease from a dealer in Colorado. Meticulous & nearly complete records are available for service from approx 40,000 miles to current. They were the type of owners who had a spreadsheet and folder of all maintenance and repairs. Has been VW dealer served by Phaeton-trained technicians almost exclusively according to the records I have, and was continuously covered and repaired under an extended warranty from about 2008 to about Dec. 2017. Passed Albuquerque, NM emissions testing in October 2017. Interior video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_S9oCzVcBSQ Driving video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYwC7Gxmt0M Ride and driving comfort is beyond any other car I have ever owned. Acceleration and braking are phenomenal. Interior is beautiful and in much better condition than any other Phaeton I have seen. See photos for actual condition. As a recent eBay seller put it, "The ultimate in German engineering. The Phaeton was hand assembled in the famous glass exterior, Transparent Factory in Dresden, Germany on a Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur chassis and utilizes Audi A8 engine and transmission. Designed under the leadership of Volkswagen’s then chairman, Ferdinand Piëch, the Phaeton was the flagship of the VW line and designed to compete toe-to-toe with the top of the line Mercedes and BMW." All I will add is that I have sat in a lot of nice BMWs and Mercs and have never seen anything quite like this car. The throaty growl of the V8 as you accelerate onto the highway while getting a massage from the heated and cooled leather front seat makes me feel like a million bucks. Tires are a matching set of Continental Extreme Contact DWS with date stamps from 2013 and 2014 in very good condition and have approximately the following tread remaining. Front driver: ~6/32Front passenger: ~8/32Rear driver: ~7/32Rear passenger: ~6/32 Includes (2) key/remote combos. One of the key/remote combos is a Valet key, which does not have a trunk remote button. Includes majority of owners manual materials - some small sections may be missing. Sold as is, where is with no warranty or performance guarantees. Known issues on the vehicle include:There is an area where the paint looks different (if you catch it in the right light) on the passenger fender. It has remained constant over my ownership these last few years, but might be an area of concern in the future. The driver side headlight washer cover on the bumper is missing - see photos. Prior to my ownership, the back bumper was painted from a minor accident. The paint around the license plate on the back bumper has cracked and peeled away in some areas, showing the original black paint underneath. It is not noticeable to me, nor has it become worse over the years. The plastic/rubber door trim on the bottom section of the doors are in need of replacement. The driver rear door trim was recently removed and stored in the trunk.A common problems on these vehicles is fraying of the friction cover on the trunk wiring sleeve. There was some fraying present on the sleeve when I purchased the vehicle used and it has remained about the same over my ownership. Various small trim pieces on the interior are missing, such as the decorative cover on the latch for the passenger rear door storage cubby, the left to right directional adjuster on the front passenger center air vent, and so on. The pop-up sunshades are intact but show some heat damage. Other minor issues may exist that I have not noticed or photographed. An unknown problem exists that may be related to the fan blower motor. My non-mechanic opinion is that something need coding/adaptation or replacement related to the fan blower for cabin cooling and heating. The symptom is as follows: sometimes, when you start the vehicle, the blower vent covers open but no air is blown through the system. If you listen carefully, you can hear the fan motor in the dash ramping up, then slowing down, then ramping up again. Sometimes, turning the fan speed to zero and then turning it back up works and restores normal fan blower function. Other times, the fan does not seem to respond to commands even after multiple attempts. You can see that the fan motor did not engage during the video in the link above. This problem has occurred infrequently over my entire ownership of the car and has never presented itself when the car is at the dealer for service, so it has not been diagnosed. It seems to happen more often in the summer time and I have noticed it many times when driving recently. I do not believe the issue is related to the air conditioning or cooling and heating components, as even if the fan won't turn on, if you drive the car, air pressure from the car movement will push some air through the vents and that air is very cold or very hot depending on your temperature setting. So, I think the problem has to do with the fan motor or controller itself. An unknown problem exists that may be related to the engine speed sensor. My non-mechanic opinion is that the engine speed sensor is beginning to fail. I have owned many VW/Audi V8 engines similar to this one and there is a common problem with the engine speed sensor needing replacement on these. The symptom presents itself as follows: if the engine is warm, the car make take longer to start. Sometimes, the engine must cool down before it will start. If this sensor is the issue and is not replaced, the problem can become worse and may result in a no-start condition or stalling or poor driving performance. Currently, the issue only presents itself as a warm/hot start problem but that could change at any time. Sometimes the rear passenger window seems to "stick" a bit before rolling down. This may indicate that the window regulator is on its way out. The sunroof control knob has come out of its assembly. The parts are included with the car, and the item may be reparable with some DIY skills or may need replacement. Even without the knob in place, it is possible to operate the power sunroof. The sunroof sliding cover has a plastic vent section that rattles sometimes. I have placed a tan piece of string in the gap where the plastic and headliner meet to stop the rattling, but you may wish to make a more permanent repair. The sunroof and sliding cover operate fine even with this string in place. The CD changer has been removed from the vehicle. The On-Star telematics unit, which was no longer operable, has been removed from the vehicle. The Navigation computer is intact, but navigation CDs are not included. Recent navigation CDs are available from multiple sources online if desired. There are various dings, scratches, swirl marks, small dents, etc. consistent with a vehicle of this age.I am not a mechanic and the above information is provided without warranty or guarantee. I provide this information as a courtesy - it is only my uneducated guess and best attempt to let you know of possible areas of concern on the vehicle in the hopes that you will be very happy with your purchase. This vehicle is more than 10 years old and is being sold AS IS, WHERE IS WITH NO PERFORMANCE GUARANTEES OR WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND. It is entirely possible that this vehicle could currently have or develop other major or minor issues at any time. Mileage is currently less than 128,500. I will continue to drive the vehicle occasionally to maintain its performance and ensure the tires don't sit in one place for too long, but I don't expect the mileage will change much. Available for test drives and in-person inspection in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA before the sale. Buyer is responsible for pickup or shipping from ZIP code 87108. Please contact me through eBay if you have any other questions. If you've been looking for a Phaeton that has been well cared for and maintained, look no further. Additional options available for an additional cost in addition to your bid - OR INCLUDED AT NO EXTRA COST IF YOU BUY IT NOW (if you want these options and you win with an auction bid, let me know and I'll send a revised eBay invoice OR list them separately for you to bid on - I will not sale these outside of eBay's established guidelines):A Phaeton-specific aftermarket iPod 30-pin adapter w/ line in is available to be included with the vehicle for $150 extra on top of your bid or buy it now price. Sold as-is, may not be compatible with your device or may require adapter. A bluetooth cell phone unit installed in place of the On-Star Telematics unit is available for an additional $100. This allows you to use the factory installed On-Star buttons in the headliner to answer calls through the built in factory microphone and sound system. This unit automatically mutes music for incoming calls. For compatible phones, you can start and end calls using the Phaeton's On-Star buttons. Music can also be played over bluetooth, but only in mono sound quality. (Stereo sound is possible, but would require an additional wire to be run from the trunk area to the back of the headunit. I have never attempted to do this.) Sold as-is, may not be compatible with your device or may require troubleshooting for specific phone functions. On May-22-18 at 16:31:57 PDT, seller added the following information: Summary of notable repairs and maintenance - added 5/22/2011: 2008-08-05 Left front window regulator, Left rear window regulator (45530 miles) 2008-10-07 50k service (50169 miles) 2009-04-03 60k service (59944 miles) 2009-12-30 70k service, Upper control arm links or bushings (69966 miles) 2010-01-28 Ignition Coil recall performed (70405 miles) 2011-09-30 Transmission replaced, 80k service including timing belt and accessories replaced, Alignment (79,901) - the previous owner indicated that there were no other problems with the transmission after it was replaced; I can attest to that - I have never noticed an issue with the transmission since my ownership began in late 2013 2011-11-16 Infotainment assembly replaced (79498 miles) 2012-06-13 Thermostat, Left Rear Door Latch (unknown miles?) 2012-07-09 All four air suspension struts replaced with updated parts (84,131 miles) 2013-12-16 90k service (89820 miles) 2013-12-20 TPMS replaced (89873 miles) - although the TPMS system seems to have given the previous owner trouble, it always worked great for me - this was the last repair they did on the car and it seemed to solve the TPMS issue 2014-04-03 New Continental DWS Extreme Contact tires all around - best remaining tire moved to spare (94596 miles) - also replaced all four TPMS sending units in the wheels with fresh parts w/ new batteries 2014-06-20 Intake manifold replaced, Right airbox replaced, powered interior rearview mirror replaced (97451 miles) 2015-07-20 One new tire due to impact with road hazard (118654 miles) 2015-08-25 Replace front passenger air suspension strut following blowout/road hazard month earlier - dealer suspected the impact may have caused a small leak in the air bladder (11927 miles) 2016-06-26 Replace crankcase breather valve, main seal, freeze plugs, valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, serpentine belt, rear differential, rear brake rotors, rear brake pads, oil change, and 4 wheel alignment (122,630 miles) 2017-01-23 New oil cooler (123,902 miles) This list is not exhaustive - I just wanted to give you an idea of the care the vehicle has received so far.On May-22-18 at 17:35:00 PDT, seller added the following information: Not shown above: In 2016, the passenger front window regulator was replaced. There may be minor typos in the above related to exact items replaced, date, mileage, etc - as I was just doing my best to summarize from my records. Thanks again for your interest!
