Vehicle Detail
This is an auction for an extremely original 1971 Ford Mustang convertible. She fit right in and looked stunning enough to gather a crowd in the parking lot of Trumps golf course Palos Verdes Cal on Sunday Feb 18th. The old timers REALLY loved it. The car was simply washed prior to pictures, no detailing or painting or " camera tricks ". It is simply a nice driver not a show car. Update : 3-26-18 the hydraulic lines for the convertible top are leaking. I have ordered a set and will either include them, or install them for you. I recently purchased this from the 2nd owner who owned this car from 1972 to Oct 2017. I bought this car for my wife after an exhaustive search for a high quality original rust free vehicle with the intent of building a custom car. I thought I had found the " gold nugget" after months and months of searching. After I got the car I grabbed a " Marti report " which identified it as an EXTREMELY rare vehicle documented as a " 1 of only 2 " built in this combination. As a classic car collector and builder/restorer I can't alter it, customize it in good conscience. So I will pass it along in it's unaltered condition and find a different donor ( less rare ) It has had a few items addressed over the years, it's just SO hard these days to find a car that hasn't been chopped up, altered, or sold more times than you can count, leaving history vague or absent. So here's the deal : It is a VERY rare car but also a VERY original car which was owned by a sweet little old grandma from Oklahoma. Yes, I actually said it, but it's the truth, that is the documented facts, with paperwork to back up. Beverly bought the car in 1972 and drove it, loved it, and maintained it until 2007 and parked it until I bought it in October 2017. After going over it and looking carefully, I found it to be exactly as documented, a very well preserved, highly original 1971 Mustang convertible which survived very well. It was painted once and had the top and carpet replaced ( It had a tiny UNNOTICED hole in the top over the passenger side floor ( later detected - which accounts for the rusted floor pan - which was poorly replaced at some point ) along with top & carpet replaced 2007- then parked inside) The rest of the car presents solid with Ford sheet metal. There are signs the front clip was replaced at some point ( before 72 when she bought it- she stated she had never wrecked it or personally been in an accident ) but appears to be all Ford sheet metal and the Title is clear. Other than that seems to retain a high percent of original components. I will provide a full description with the good, the bad, and the ugly. Please feel free to ask any and all questions and confirm all answers so we are both on the same page and both happy with sale. OK first and foremost : It is 46 plus years old and will show some wear. I will provide a general overview, then get down to the nitty gritty details. It is a solid rust free driver that starts, drives & steers, and stops as it should. Everything works as it should and there are no major concerns or issues with general operation. The history : After 30 plus years, granny got tired of grabbing groceries, dropping the kids off at school, and driving the State senator Ray Taylor up & down the main drag during Christmas parades and parked it. The rest of the car just seems to have all its original major equipment and the date codes all seem to correspond with the build date together. I have looked all over the car, inspected it from end to end, top to bottom and tried to find issues, and found very few. There are signs of originality all over the car. Under the hood, there is still paint marks and "ID" stamps + OK dabs on the block. The wiring loom under the hood is obviously untouched. All the items that are easy to spot if they are altered all appear untouched. No Edelbrock or big holes for headers etc.Power options all work normal : Top, brakes, power steering etc are all smooth smooth. ( update - lines for covertible top are leaking. I have ordered new ones. I will include them with the car, or install them for you. ) The body has all Ford sheet metal with the exception of the passenger floor pan previously mentioned. You can see date stamps everywhere and body panel seams, edges/lips. There are no big dents or obvious damage and paint still shines after a wash but paint is weak and due for repaint. It has some scratches, chips, and imperfections. You can see some thin spots on it and a few small cracks. It appears to have 1 Saddle bronze/medium tan metallic repaint and some point. ?? year but it was long ago. Interior : The white interior appears to be original. Seat covers show their age but could be cleaned up/re-dyed. The plastic seat backs and rear plastic interior panels are sun baked and flaking. Easy fix for somebody with a screwdriver and 1 hour. I am going to order the panels so it may be me being handy with a screwdriver. ( Update : I bought a set of originals and will include them or install for you )Tan carpet was replaced when they did the floorpan. Carpet is in great shape. Door panels are in fair shape but need to be cleaned/dyed. Dash and instrument cluster is in very good shape. In fact, the dash just looks unusually nice. Aside from a cracked gauge lens ( which is ordered already ) it is very clean, no " footprints " The kind of condition you would expect from well....a grandma....lol. AM/FM radio crackles to life with that old " tinny " sound of a straining 1970's era radio. The dash pad is still nice & soft with no signs of cracking. Then the car was parked and sat until Oct 17 when I bought it. Car was stored inside and the top is still PRISTINE ! No stains or blemishes on this white top which goes up and down nicely with a flick of the switch. I did notice an oil stain on one of the metal folding arms of the convertible top frame which usually means a loose fitting/leaking seal. May seal up will some exercise ? OK, so after being driven & cared for by grandma from 1972 til now, it is just a time capsule. After averaging out the miles vs the actual years driven , I think she averaged under 2K miles per year = 62K miles. Not a show car, but an solid original driver. Unmolested, no chopped up dash with cd players, no Edelbrock stuff underhood etc. Just a rarely seen original. Since it sat for 10 years, I had it transported via trailer to it's new home in sunny So Cal and brought it back to life. Here's what it took : Her son stored it right, filled it with oil, jacked it up, put in mousetraps etc. He did not add fuel stabilizer though, so we replaced all fuel system New battery and cables. New starter solenoid and voltage regulatorNew hoses and beltscomplete new fuel system = fuel tank/sending unit, all new fuel lines ( rubber and steel ) New fuel pumpOriginal carb was rebuilt - fires up and idles ridiculously smooth even in the middle of December. New distributor, points, cap, rotor, plugs and wires. New radiator cap. Oil and filter change. New master cylinder and then bled brakes all the way around. Looking under the hood, you will only see "FORD" Autolite or Motorcraft markings. Original equip used if it could be found.SO overall this is just a nice solid highly original driver. It is NOT a concourse show car. A paint job and freshen up would absolutely produce a very rarely seen quality of originality and rareness. Copy of Marti report showing its " 1 of 2 " built status. By survivability rates of today, this is a VERY strong chance that the other one is long since gone making this....this last one left alive. A very dependable car and a joy to drive. Due to its history, I had no worries about firing it up and driving it right down the I-5 & 405 freeways & over the " Grapevine " in Los Angeles to get it home 110 miles after service. I took the Mrs to Trumps golf course for the buffet today. This car just made everything else seem just that much sweeter. Everything works. It is a very quiet car. Starts, runs, steers and stops as it should. I drove on existing tires but they are old so you may prefer new tires. Please....ask ALOT of questions AND....confirm the answers. Don't bid " blind " by not knowing the car by asking questions. I will answer any and all questions even if it's not what you want to hear. I maintain a 100% feedback rating for a reason : I don't sell junk, and I disclose everything everything everything so you are not surprised and we are both happy with sale. Summer is coming, beat the " supply and demand " price curve and snap this one up NOW ! You most definitely will not see one like this again. Prefer a pick up in person. Cash in my hand. Title in your hand. Paypal transfer must clear AND land in my bank before car is released. This may take a few days. If you have a problem with that, bring cash. Good luck and happy bidding Mustangers.......
