My daughter has been excited about FJ40's for years. About 2 years ago I started to research them and began looking for a decent one and I figured it would be a good project for us to work on together. The first thing I learned was that the 1979-1983 were the most desirable because of enhanced features that include the following improvements: 3:73:1 differentials for much quieter and easier freeway driving; the gas tankis moved from under the passenger seat to under the vehicle between the frame members where it belongs; larger, more heavy-duty, body mounts; handbrake/emergency brake moved to floor from dash; headlamps moved farther apart: front disc brakes; power-assisted brakes; rear ambulance-style swing-out doors; swing-out rear windows for improved air flow; larger front turn signals with side-marker lights built in; larger side mirrors for better visibility; and tubular, swing-out, spare tire mount; power steering.Well, in the beginning of the year I found one that was from Texas and had it shipped to my daughter in Knoxville Tennessee. She fell in love with it and began driving it immediately. I started to gather parts that I figured we would need for the restoration. Well it did not take long before I realized "This Project Was Well Above My Paygrade!" . Now she has decided to sell it. So here it is... This is a good FJ40 for trail riding, daily driving, or as a candidate for restoration. For me, I wanted to take the full blown restoration path because....The hard top is good, the doors are all in good shape with minimal rust, and the hood/front is solid. The tub will need some work (most FJ40 's do), but with some sheetmetal work, a paint job, some new upholstery, and some TLC, this Cruiser would be nice. Or...you could just drive it ! Have some new sheet metal parts and some weather stripping.nBecauseof the engine swap the actual milage is unknown.
