Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE 1999 BMW 740iL NO RESERVE It’s become time to sell one of my favorite cars, my 1999 740il. I bought this car about a year ago with just under 204,000 miles, it currently has 204,500 miles. The car has some needs, which I will address below. The previous owner took very good care of it, they bought it used in 2003 with 75k miles and maintained it very well. The most recent major repair was new timing chains, which was done at an independent service center in the tune of $5002.25 on 6-29-2016. 4 months later on 10-12-2016 the entire cooling system was replaced for $1867.15. At 145k miles the dreaded intake valley pan leak was fixed with all new parts for $2,444.93. I put a set of like new OEM M-parallels with brand new tires on the car when I bought it- these cost $1800. I have over $27,000 worth of service records for the car in a 2” binder from the previous owner, I’ve spent around another $1000 getting it up and running when I bought it, not including the wheels. Includes 3 sets of keys and a recently installed new battery. Body wise I would give it a 9/10, its in superb shape for a 20 year old car, interior I would give a 7/10- mainly because of the headliner sag and broken cup holder. Clean Carfax/Autocheck. No accidents. Everything in the car works minus the cup holders, it also has an upgraded sound system that the last owner had professionally installed in 2010 for $1,363.51. I’m selling this car because I bought a low mileage E38 750il with the v12 and it’s one of the cars I’ve always wanted. I own 8 BMW’s and am a BMW CCA member. I own every generation seven series from the E23 to the G11, and the E38 still holds its own 20 years later. The prices of these cars are on an upswing, and rightfully so. Super low mileage examples are now over $25,000. A 25k mile car just sold on BAT for $27,250. This car will be much less money and you don’t have to feel bad about actually driving it and putting more miles on it. Fix the few minor things and enjoy this car for many years to come. Now to the bad part: this car still needs some work. See below: * The front control arms are bad, which causes the 55-mph shimmy. At over 200,000 miles I would go over the entire suspension if you want it to drive like new. * The car still has an oil leak. In my opinion the service center that did the previous owners repair work wasn’t very good, it shouldn’t be leaking after all the work they did. * The headliner is falling down and the sunroof cover is missing its fabric. * The steering wheel is squeaky when you turn it when its cold in the car- sounds like the clock spring. * The transmission shifts though the gears and doesn’t slip, but it gives the felling that the torque converter lock/unlocks, it doesn’t do it all the time and it doesn’t throw a code so I’m not sure what the problem is. I would start with a fluid flush and filter change- I have a brand new OEM filter for it. Overall this car is an excellent starting point for you to put some time and effort into and have a great drivers car, I would myself if I didn’t buy my 750il. I would recommend towing the car if you plan on purchasing- it is drivable but it has the shimmy at 55mph from the control arms- around 65-70 it goes away. I did drive it on a 150 mile round trip to a car show in Canton and it did just fine. If you have any questions or need specific photos of anything let me know I will be more than happy to help.
