Vehicle Detail
The 1974 Porsche 914 Targa is a remarkable entry level sports car and with the mid-engine setup, it is a great handling car. It is really fun to drive. With its power to weight ratio, you barely need to use the brakes and never has 84 horsepower felt so good. I own several Porsche cars and this car is more fun to drive than my 1993 968 and almost as much fun as my Boxster S. Equipped with the Factory 1.8L carbureted engine and complimented with the 5 Speed manual transmission, 4 wheel disc brakes and independent front and rear suspension, the car performs well. This is an original low mileage 914 with less than 83,000 miles on the clock. This car has not been restored but it has been regularly maintained. The exterior paint would classify as driver quality showing its age and some mild blemishes. The exterior trim is all in good condition. Glass is all in good condition with no cracks or chips. The interior is showing its age but not nasty at all. All the gauges work and even the original radio is still in the car and working. The Targa top is in nice condition and is quick and easy to remove and stores nicely as it should in the trunk. I drive this car regularly from my house to my Lake Club - a short ride with twisty roads, I arrive every-time with a smile on my face. Once I get to the Lake, the car always draws a small crowd of people wanting to come over and talk about the little blue Porsche. The drive and the conversations are always more fun than enjoying the Lake. Here is what I have done to the car since I took ownership: Replaced the Brakes: New Front Caliper's (A-1 Cardone), New Pads - Centric Posi-Quiet Ceramic Front and Rear Brake Pads, new OEM Front Rotors, and Zimmermann Coated Rear Brake Rotors. I had to have the rear Calipers rebuilt as I could not find any new rear calipers. All new brake hoses and parking brake cables. And best of all I installed a new High Performance 23mm Master Cylinder. Replaced Front Inner and Outer Wheel Bearings and Bearing Seals. Added Weltmeister Short Shift Kit including Shift Bushing Super Kit from Pelican Parts. Replaced Headlamps with Wagner Halogen Sealed Beam lights. Replaced the Coil with BERU Germany 3.3 Ohm Blue Coil and replaced the points ignition with a Hot-Spark electronic ignition and new spark plugs. This was the single best thing I did to the car. It really made it more reliable and predictable. Replaced Targa Top Trunk storage clips. All work was professionally done – I don’t turn wrenches, I drive. That is the good. The bad is this is a 43 year old car and that means it needs attention. Cars of this age can and will be temperamental. The carb will need to be adjusted, oil will leak and the battle against rust is never ending. Keep in mind this car has never been restored and is a good candidate for a complete or partial restoration. Please take a look at the pictures and feel free to call me with any questions. I can provide additional pictures - just contact me and I will email them to you. Thank you for looking and good luck. Pete 917-434-2071
