The four-seat 1958 Thunderbird was the first of Detroit's 'personal luxury' cars. Nicknamed 'Squarebird' due to its angular profile, the '58 was remarkably smaller than the traditional Fifties luxury car. Although many mourned the passing of the two-seat 1955-57 Thunderbirds, these second generation 1958-60 'Birds - available as coupes or convertibles - were far more popular. By the early 1960s, it seemed every car buyer wanted bucket seats and a 'Thunderbird roofline.'
The 1958 Thunderbird featured unitized body-frame construction and was built at a then brand new Ford assembly plant in Wixom, Michigan. The Wixom plant built Thunderbirds through 2005 and closed permanently in June 2007.
This 1958 Thunderbird Hardtop Coupe was built in June of 1958 and was purchased new by the most recent owner's grandfather. Thanks to extensive research and a painstaking 10-year restoration, this 'Bird remains true to its original 'off-the-line' condition. It features a black-and-white interior - an ultra-rare combination in a 1958 Thunderbird.
This Ford T-Bird actually won 2nd place on the California concourse back in 1997. The previous owner took meticulous care of the vehicle and often showed the car winning a handful of events. It features the correct 352 Cubic Inch "Interceptor" Thunderbird Special V-8 300 Horsepower/4-Barrel Carburetor/Dual Exhaust engine is tuned and runs great The correct Cruise-O-Matic (3-Speed Automatic) transmission shifts smooth through all gears with the correct 3.10 ratio rear end.
The body is very straight with no bondo and painted in the correct Winterset White with a deep shine. The stainless and chrome have been redone and are in great condition with no pitting or peeling. The correct style black and white vinyl interior is in great shape and shows as new. The underside of the vehicle is original with no signs of rust or repair. The floors are solid and straight.
