Vehicle Detail

In the middle of the 1960s, just about every American car manufacturer was throwing their hat into the ring to get a piece of the lucrative performance car market. Following Pontiac's lead with the GTO, the usual suspects at Chevrolet and Ford were quick to offer multiple options for buyers wanting big engines in medium and small-sized cars. Even traditionally conservative brands like Oldsmobile, Mercury and AMC/Rambler got in on the action. For Oldsmobile, their foray into the muscle car market stemmed from an internal competition with Pontiac. Olds was caught off-guard by the success of Pontiac's LeMans-based GTO and was desperate to offer a competitive model of their own. The engineering team devised a performance package to add to the mid-sized Cutlass, which they named "4-4-2". The 4-4-2 name denoted a four barrel carburetor, four-speed transmission, and dual exhaust, though in reality subsequent models could be optioned with automatic or 3-speed manual transmissions. With a handsome, understated looks, awesome performance, and relative rarity, we've always counted these early 4-4-2s among of our favorite muscle cars of the era. **** Numbers Matching Protect-O-PlateOriginal L-78 engine, 4-speed, Porcelain white over black One previous owner Over $6,000 in new parts includedMedia blasted and primed, very solid bodyVery straight-forward project RB Collection offers this very correct, matching-numbers 1966 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 project. Purchased by us from the original owner, we intended to perform a sympathetic restoration, however our customer business has grown and we now need to find a new home for our Olds. The original trim tag confirms this is a Deluxe F-85 Cutlass with 4-4-2 trim, floor shift four-speed, in Porcelain White over a black interior and factory tinted glass. We have the original Protect-O-Plate, owner's manual and a hand-written service log from the original owner. Sound, straight and well-documented, this is a great opportunity to acquire a rare and desirable muscle car. Upon acquiring it, the car was carefully disassembled and the body removed from the frame, where it was media blasted and epoxy primed. The frame, which is straight and free of any corrosion, was also blasted and painted. At the same time, the interior components were professionally restored using concours correct seat covers in the correct original black upholstery supplied by OPGI. The body is exceptionally straight with no accident damage. There are a couple of minor areas of corrosion that are clearly seen, all very easily repaired without requiring any large panels or complicated fabrication. The hood, doors and fenders are straight and clean. The original, numbers-matching 400 cubic-inch L78 engine and four-speed gearbox are included. They were in good order when removed from the car, and both require finish restoration work. Included in the sale is an entire collection of new parts for the reassembly process. Exterior trim, brightwork and emblems, rubber gaskets, engine bay detailing and assembly parts, interior trim, new correct carpets, new bumpers from Bumper Boyz (along with the unrestored originals). Engine parts such as exhaust manifolds, date coded ignition wires, correct air cleaner assembly are also included. A comprehensive list of parts can be sent to interested buyers. As a professional restoration shop, we recognize this 4-4-2 as an ideal candidate for restoration. It is very clean, straight and complete. It has good history and is a relatively rare and very desirable example from the glory days of the Muscle car era. Please contact Geoffrey Isabelle or Alex Ruozzi at RB Collection for more information. We welcome personal inspections and are happy to answer any questions you may have.
