Vehicle Detail
Up for sale is my 1987 Porsche 944S. I've owned this car for 22 years. I have too many vehicles and I don't drive this one much any more. I hate to sell it, and am not desperate to do so, but have listed it with an extremely attractive opening bid. I'd keep the car sooner than sell it below the opening bid, but have no problem selling it at the opening bid price if that's what it sells for...as long as the buyer is serious and not looking to pick apart the car and try to lower the price after auction's end. I've seen folk pay more for a lot worse Porsches, and if you are out to flip it and cannot make enough if paying $2495, it is not my concern. I'd prefer to sell it to someone who wants it for themselves. It's a very nice car, handles like a dream, and is the highly sought after dual cam 16 valve "S" model. More power than the non S, but cheaper to insure than the Turbo. Has Anti-lock brakes and the highly sought after limited slip option. Best handling car I've ever owned. I strongly encourage you to come see it prior to bidding if you are within driving distance. I think you'll like it. I had someone win the auction previously, only to request more pictures because there is reflection in the ones posted. They were unwilling to drive 1.5 hours to see it. The paint is shiny, shiny paint reflects, not much I can do about that. If you need more pictures, please ask prior to the end of the auction and before bidding. The Good: Looks nice, runs and drives. It was my summer daily driver to work but I stopped driving it much as the area where I work changed and I didn't like parking it there or driving it on the rough Milwaukee roads. Also it had developed a fuel leak. I just replaced the leaking fuel pump with a new one, have been driving it to work last few days. Good brakes (4 wheel disc, dual piston calipers in front, Bosch Antilock). Factory Blaupunkt Vancouver Radio/Cassette works well, even plays cassettes! Air Conditioning works well, blows COLD air!!!! Power Windows, Cruise works, fog lights work, sun roof works. Tires have decent tread. Factory jack, collapsible spare and tool kit included. Headlights pop up just fine. Factory Alarm works. Wipers, washer, cruise control, horn all work. New Die Hard battery installed this past spring. Opening bid, only $2495! Option codes: C77 DE5 018 220 474 533 593 650 946 see picture of option code sticker. The Bad: Paint is not perfect, has some flaws, couple of runs, faint ghosting, wasn't wet sanded after repaint, but looks good as a daily driver. If you want a show car, this is not it, go spend $10,000, Typical cracks in dash, leather peeling from shift knob. Tear in driver's seat (see pictures). Speedometer works but odometer stopped working a few tankfuls ago. One guy who owns 3 of these 944's told me this is common as a gear starts slipping. I know my brother sent his speedometer out for repair for the same issue when he had an 85 1/2 944. (I keep a mileage/record book so it is documented when it stopped). Oil gauge is a little erratic. It's been like that ever since I have owned it. I had the (leaking) sending unit changed but it didn't help, so it must be the gauge. It does indicate pressure though. Some nasty carpet stains. Gear shift pattern seems loose, been like that ever since I've owned it. Fuel gauge didn't work after being stored all winter, but has started working and has been working ever since. Cooling fans are a little erratic, sometimes they come on when not hot or relay chatters when hot. Could be the relay or the temperature sending unit. Hinge on plastic piece that removable sunroof slides into has break in left side hinge. Not noticeable when sunroof is in. AC switch fell apart so a toggle switch now operates AC compressor and auxiliary fan. Like most 944's, the clock LCD display went bad. I bought a replacement LCD kit but never installed it, I'll include it with the car. Rear hatch lock doesn't work. It is currently not installed, but I have the original pieces (small pot metal piece is broken, not built to last). I never got around to finding a replacement, but the inside release switch operates it just fine. Passenger side outside door handle is a bit tight to operate, works but you must push hard on the trigger, could need lubed or eventually replaced (worn pot metal trigger is typical on German cars). I replaced the gas lifters on the hood years ago but they need replaced again for it to stay open. Rear hatch lifters work in warm weather, but not cold. That's all I can think of. I've given an honest detailed description in order to avoid any disappointments. I know I hate it when sellers don't want to "scare away" buyers and then you go to look at it or pick up the car and it is a disappointment. I don't want that so I've spelled out each imperfection that I am aware of. Feel free to ask questions. Not perfect, but overall a good looking and good running car for its age! I've seen much worse! I've seen low mileage mint ones too, but priced much higher. I'm starting the bid with no reserve! It could be restored to perfection or just enjoyed as-is. Some have asked if the clutch has ever been replaced, I don't know, not in the time I have owned it. I did change the timing, balance shaft belts, rollers and water pump once since I've owned it, about 46,000 miles ago. I changed the pads on the tensioner and guide of the dual cam chain a few years ago. I do have a folder full of receipts for parts and service since I have owned the car, as well as a mileage notebook showing all gas fill ups, odometer reading and dates since I've owned the car. The original wheels were 16" flat style Porsche like what is on it, but painted silver (over the original silver paint). They had some curb damage and one rear one was bent to the point of not wanting to hold air (thanks to north side Milwaukee road conditions) so I bought the set that is currently on it off eBay. They are the same style and size. They are nice and straight, but were painted grey. They are now painted semi-gloss black as in the pictures. I have the original wheels if you want them. The original finish Porsche used on these wheels was silver paint, not chrome. Purists might want to refinish them, but I like the modern look of the black wheels. Lug nuts are the original lightweight magnesium. The locking ones are missing the plastic lock inserts. Cash, PayPal, or escrow (payment released when you or your shipper picks up car) accepted. Too many fake bank checks these days. No scammers please. For the 1987 model year, the 944S "Super" was introduced. The 944S featured a high performance normally aspirated, dual-overhead-cam 16-valve 190 PS (140 kW; 187 hp) version of the 2.5 L engine (M44/40) featuring a self-adjusting timing belt tensioner. This marked the first use of four-valve-per-cylinder heads and DOHC in the 944 series, derived from the 928 S4 featuring a redesigned camshaft drive, a magnesium intake tract/passages, magnesium valve cover, larger capacity oil sump, and revised exhaust system. The alternator capacity was 115 amps. The wheel bearings were also strengthened and the brake servo action was made more powerful. Floating 944 calipers were standard, but the rear wheel brake circuit pressure regulator from the 944 turbo was used. Small '16 Ventiler' script badges were added on the sides in front of the body protection mouldings. Performance was quoted as 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.5 seconds (Best) and a 232 km/h (144 mph) top speed due to a 2857 lb weight. It also featured an improved programmed Bosch Digital Motronic 2 Computer/DME with dual knock sensors for improved fuel performance for the higher 10.9:1 compression ratio cylinder head. Like the 944 Turbo, the 944S received progressive springs for greater handling, Larger front and rear anti-roll bars, revised transmission and gearing to better suit the 2.5 L DOHC higher 6800 rpm rev limit. Dual safety air bags, limited-slip differential, and ABS braking system were optional on the 944S. NOTE: NO de@dbe@t bidders please!!! Contact me first if you have below 5 feed back. If you have any questions or concerns about the car, please ask BEFORE bidding, as I do not wish to pay the seller fees for a car that did not sell. Feel free to come and look at the car prior to bidding or to have a car inspection service come look at the car. WHEN YOU BID, YOU ARE ENTERING INTO A BINDING CONTRACT...if you don't know that, you probably should not be on eBay! If you don't have the money, wife doesn't approve, don't bid. If you want to offer an interesting trade, contact me, don't bid until I approve it. If you want to bid with the idea of beating me down on price later, don't bid. I am advertising this car locally and reserve the right to end this auction early if it sells.
