Vehicle Detail
Basics:Up for auction in nearly all original condition with low miles is this unique, numbers matching '82 Datsun 720 pickup with 5-speed manual transmission. King Cab version with the highly sought after SD22 Diesel engine. All mechanical parts original. It looks like the only things that have ever been replaced is the battery and cables, bypass hose and lower radiator hose. Runs and Drives well. The vehicle was garaged the majority of its life and was well maintained and looked after through 2 of the original owners, who were related. American Racing vintage wheels, newer Cooper Cobra tires with 90% tread. Condition:Good. Frame is great and straight, only portioned amounts of surface oxidization. The body has no rust, which is rare for this generation Datsun. The truck bed is the worst part of vehicle and has several small and 1 large rust spot through the corrugated metal. Overall, there are many poor condition spots including small scratches, dents, dings, nicks and fading to clearcoat and paint. One spot of the original decal stripes is coming a little loose due to old adhesive. The hood has several spots of touchup near the front center. Touchup small spots throughout. I have purchased the matching paint color (Marine Blue) which will be provided to buyer. Needs thinner and hardener added. A halfway decent body man should be able to touch up in moments. The engine compartment is extremely clean and well maintained with only some polychrome flaking from parts like the filter cover, metal lines, or air intake. The truck runs and drives well, has a high idle directly after start in Neutral until you adjust the choke. The choke extremely assists in the starting of this vehicle because of the glow plugs which need about 15-30 seconds to warm up and slightly longer in the extreme cold (near freezing). The alignment is slightly off and could use some attention in my opinion ion to optimize driving experience. When you really have the trucks wheels turned all the way to the right, sometimes the tire rubs on rubber guard and makes annoying noise. There is no power steering tin his auto so keep that in mind if you're a first time vintage automobile owner. The Option of A/C is equipped and all there still in tact but needs charging. The Alpine stereo doesn't not function and I don't feel it's original to truck, but its very fitting and I could be wrong. The wires are all there from under the hood, connected to the battery, but will need to be attached to radio. The wires are tucked neatly behind the center console shifter cover, which easily comes off with 4 simple screws. The entirety of the interior is in overall very good condition for age. There is a slight seam split about half inch length on the back of drivers headrest, and the drivers seat could use a new spring on the left side in my personal opinion, but doesn't impede anything at all. There is a nasty gash on dash board atop right steering column (photoed). Floor pans solid condition. All original windows, seats, dash, column, shifter cover, door panels, knobs, cranks everything. Needs to be cleaned. Rarity: It may not look like much- but to the discerning, appreciative enthusiast, this is the Datsun to put yourself in! Not only is this year 720 rare in itself, especially in fine condition, but more so is the SD22 Diesel engine which Nissan produced. With less than 61k original miles, it's a hard to find Diesel option in a King Cab body style. By the way the truck gets about 35-38 MPG which is exceptional even for today's eco-friendly standards. If you research, the avian, you'll quickly notice that the color code is Silver, this confused me at first because the truck is clearly factory painted Blue. I showed it to 2 specialist to make sure I wasn't crazy and they both said it was a factory paint job and decal offering. This made me delve into the research of original Datsun colors, and sure enough I found a match- Marine Blue offered in 1982. I then contacted the Datsun museum in Australia and had a nice correspondent e plain to me that in 1982, Nissan/Datsun offered special one-of-a-kind vehicles to dealerships in the United States. This truck was equipped with a Tonka package. The differences you'll notice from this package include a slightly different ride height, sweet rounded bumper, color change from base silver, decal side stripes and special Tonka U.S.A. tailgate.
