Happy "eBaying"! Paul R. Wankle, Pres. Classic Cars Ltd. Pleasanton, CA 925-846-1451 OVERVIEW-THIS PARTICULAR 1976 MGB This 1976 MGB comes to us, as do most of our vehicles, from a local referral. This MGB was cherished by its one, long-time owner until he passed away recently. The only reason for the MG's sale is the dissolution of the estate that include this MGB, a restored 1952 MGTD, a lovely, restored 1955 MG Magnette ZA, and a 2000 Jaguar S-Type. We are selling the entire collection and ask that you contact us should you have an interest in any of these fantastic MG's. This car is in absolutely tremendous condition and was used primarily as an occasional weekend car and to show at car shows where it garnered a number of awards including a prestigious Best of Show. While the MGB is a very high level car, the cars previous owner would not classify it as a "full blown show car." The "B" can still be used and enjoyed on the weekends and, as a car to show or attend special club events. It is, however, an exceptionally well cared for and highly documented "B." Major features of this 1976 MGB are as follows: - Totally stock with the exception of some minor cosmetic improvements / upgrades (more on that later) - One owner / driver car / very low mileage (44,000~) miles one owner / driver car - Purchased new at Burlingame, CA. British Motors, Inc. on 7/10/76 - Original Window Sticker & Bill of Sale Included - Repair history, 2" thick maintenance file and upgrade information since new! - Factory fitted 4-speed manual transmission - Factory OVERDRIVE MGB - Registration is valid until 7/10/16 (For California buyers only) - Includes MGB "Driver's Handbook" (Owner's Manual) - Wire wheel car with excellent tires & brakes - Exceptionally straight, totally rust free California body & trim - High gloss "Damask Red" paint in excellent condition and free of significant flaws / imperfections - Like new high quality canvas black convertible top w/ clear windows (3) - Matching high quality rear boot cover in black (factory original black vinyl boot cover included) - Correctly configured engine compartment with no modifications - Just passed strict California smog test on Just 19, 2015 - Relatively new leather interior - Beautiful black interior with crack / damage free seats, dash and door panels - New carpet, dash, high quality canvas convertible top and "tonneau cover" - Updated 3-spoke steering wheel (original included) - Dual chrome side mirrors - Electric windshield wipers (3) and washers - Hidden "Kill" switch for storage and security - Functional heater and defroster - Custom cover & factory lug wrench - Car cover included - Two MGB shop manuals included - Show awards included will go to the cars new owner DETAILS-THIS PARTICULAR 1976 MGB CONVERTIBLE THE NUMBERS Decoding the VIN number GHN5UG404591G on the MGB: - G = MG - H = BMC B - A Series Engine, 1.8 liter - N = Body Type (2 Seater Roadster) - 5 = MK3 (1970-1979) - U = USA (Left Hand Drive Car) - G = Year (1976 for G) - 404591 - Car Number (Production Number) MECHANICAL - Stock 1.8 L 4 cylinder engine - 4 speed manual transmission, fully synchromesh - Stock front disc/rear drum brakes, power w/ dual master cylinder MECHANICAL CONDITION / MAINTENANCE & REPAIRS This MGB comes with one of the most extensive files of ongoing maintenance, repairs and upgrades that we have had the pleasure of seeing in 20+ years. While it is entirely too lengthy to detail item by item, the following highlights will be of interest to the cars new owner. A recent summary includes (please keep in mind this MGB has only 44,736 documented miles so virtually all of the repairs and service work are preventive in nature): - New Battery - Within 2 weeks - Complete Oil Service - - Brake check & safety inspection - - Radiator re-core, new anti-freeze & oil service - Complete lube, adjust valves, new wires, rotor and tune - - New windshield - 600 miles ago - March 2007 - March 2008 - New paint, carpeting, Stayfast convertible top, interior panels, exterior chrome, muffler, tonneau cover (Total cost $6,990.56) - New Halogen headlight bulbs, tail lam and turn signal bulbs - New exhaust pipes - Check compression (#1 135psi, #2 130psi, #3 130 psi, #4 130 psi) and complete tune-up including plugs, timing, etc. (approximately 2,000 miles ago) - New tires Sumitomo 175/70R 14" - (2,100 miles ago) - Complete tune up, new brake hoses, bleed brakes and check calipers and entire system, install hidden cut-off switch - (2,272 miles ago) - New battery - Replace alternator complete oil service, rebuild carburetor, new fuel gauge sending unit and replace spark plugs & rotor - (3,200 miles ago) - Replace manifolds to R&R gasket and replace valve cover gaskets. Oil service as a result of minimal use (3,600 miles ago) - Replace upper & lower radiator hoses, flush system and replace coolant (4,000 miles ago) - Replace A-arm bushings, complete oil service & lube, replace heater control valve gasket, replace timing cover seal & gasket & re-glue hood insulation (4,500 miles ago) Important Note: This summary of maintenance is intended to provide the prospective buyer with a sense of the incredible care that the MGB has received from the day of its delivery. It has been a very trouble free car and the almost obsessive maintenance completed by its only owner was done preventative in nature. The frequent oil services, change of gaskets, tune-ups and other maintenance was done to ensure that the car was in excellent condition at all times. Additionally, the file contains all of the receipts from the dealer for service at the MGB service / maintenance intervals. The file makes for fascinating reading and includes, but is not limited to warranty work that was performed on the MGB since it was delivered to its one and only owner in July, 1976. As an example, receipts for the following are contained in the file (along with MANY others). - 3,000 miles service @ 3,140 miles - 6,000 mile service @ 6,058 miles - 9,000 mile service @ 8,707 miles - Service @ 9,091 by dealer for water pump replacement - 12,500 mile service at 12,260 miles - 16,000 mile service @ 16,310 miles - 19,000 mile service @ 18,366 miles - Dealer service and transmission overhaul @ 19,164 miles - 22,000 mile service @ 22,051 miles - 25,000 mile service @ 24,720 miles And the list goes on and on with full and complete documentation until weeks ago. This MGB was NEVER neglected, driven regularly, and never stored for any prolonged periods of time. Simply stated the MG was cared for as well as any MGB that we can remember seeing over the years. While not noted, the car has passed smog in California over the years without a problem and, within the past few weeks, was given a totally clean bill of health for the required smog at the time of the most recent license renewal. OVERALL COSMETIC CONDITION The paint on the MGB is very high gloss and the cars original owner had the car professionally painted several years ago to ensure that it was looking its best and would continue to be a candidate for recognition for awards at local shows. The various awards (refer to photos and other portions of this write-up) prove that he succeeded. There is absolutely no fading or significant issues and any minor imperfections require a close critical eye to be noticed and do not detract from the cars appearance. Any flaws are so minor that they do not show in the photographs. Since the cars re-paint it has had no partial re-painting and is reported by the owner's widow as being a totally accident free, California car since new (the extensive records reflect the purchase of the car from Burlingame, CA. British Motors on July 10, 1976. The MGB has a wonderful blend of originality and "restoration" of some of its many original components to always keep it looking "fresh." Perhaps most important, the strength of this MGB is in its strong "bones" , especially when it comes to the lack of rust and rot in the "usual" places like the floor boards, rocker panels, lower fenders, under hood, chassis, jacking points, etc. The independent inspection supports that the MGB has never been involved in an accident and the body and chassis are as free from rust through as we have seen on any MGB. The history of this car from the wife of the recently deceased original owner (the only reason for its sale) reveals that it has not only been in California all of its life but was a pampered part of his British car collection. We can speak to the care that he took of all of the cars since we were selected to represent all of his cars including the following: - 1953 MGTD (Totally Restored) - 1955 MG Magnette ZA - 1976 MGB (the car listed here) - 2000 Jaguar S-Type (60,000 original miles) Finally, to our taste, the combination of the exterior color, new leather interior and beautiful wire wheels (authentic "knock off" mount, not bolt on) make this MGB a desirable example, indeed. An inspection of the underside of the MGB body reveals the same rust free nature and a solid, damage free chassis and floor pans. In fact, as the photographs suggest, there is absolutely no structural rust / rot in the car. The underside of the car has very light patina of road grime and light discoloration but the floor pans, frame and other areas are as solid as a rock. Buyers in other parts of the USA / World will appreciate these photos as those that only exist with a clean, California car that has had NO exposure to salt and minimal use in the wet. The battery box is as solid as we have ever seen and totally rust free. The trunk area is also totally solid with no rust through or rot / damage. The trunk contains a spare wire wheel/tire, along with the jack and tools. The doors and trunk close with a solid "thud" and show very good gaps. The same is true for the doors that show no signs of sagging and close very solidly and securely. The underside of the hood is clean as is the engine compartment and free of dirt, oil and grease. The front hood latch works perfectly as does the safety latch. The trunk and doors lock properly and the new owner will receive two full sets of keys. The exterior trim is in extremely nice condition with rust free, front grill and exterior trim. The front and rear bumpers have none of the usual damage or scratches that we see on so many of these cars. The exterior moldings are free from damage and the stainless steel side moldings show virtually no dings or dents from careless door opening. The remainder of the exterior trim is brilliant including but not limited to: chrome headlight trim rings, tail light trim, side mirrors, MG logos, side marker light trim, bumpers, door handles, etc. There is no trim missing. This car shows its use as a show car and suburban car that was never exposed to parallel parking, door dings or other abuse. The side windows are free from cracks and damage. The front windshield is also free from any cracks or stars and the windshield wipers are functional and in good condition. The trim surrounding the windshield and other windows is very good. The top is raised and lowered with ease and the frame is original. The convertible top and matching convertible top cover are high quality canvas, not the inexpensive original vinyl. They add a touch of quality to the MGB and both are in excellent condition being totally free from any damage, fading or signs of wear. The rear window is perfectly clear. The tires are in excellent condition and are a matched set of the proper size tires for the MGB. The wheels are the original wire wheel and in beautiful shape. INTERIOR The interior has stock MGB seats, door panels and trim. The seats and door panels are free from rips, tears and signs of significant wear and tear. There are no signs of damage or wear on the often worn driver's side left seat bolster. The interior reflects a high level of care and, while it has not been "restored", it is apparent that it has not only been exceptionally well taken care of but used for just over 44,000 original miles. One of the few changes to the car is the addition of a quality black 3-spoke steering wheel that is fitted with an MG logo. The original wheel is included with the car and is like new condition. The seats and other panels are in excellent condition as is the carpet, crack free dash, gauges (fully functional) and other interior items. This MGB has escaped the numerous modifications that we see on many older MGB's including: cut-up dash boards, incorrect instruments, etc. and remains largely stock with the exception of upgraded materials and the improved steering wheel. The MGB is fitted with an improved radio (in the stock dash opening) and a lovely, period style walnut shift knob emblazoned with the MG logo. The dash remains in excellent condition and houses the stock gauges. The switches, and toggles are original style and in very nice, original condition. The lenses are clear and legible. The lights, wipers, turn signals and dash lights are fully functional. The temperature gauge is always within acceptable range and the oil pressure reads 60 lbs. when cold and only slightly lower when warm. The photographs accurately reflect the overall condition of the interior. The MGB is fitted with 3-point seat belts / shoulder harnesses. The radio / Cassette player is an upgraded Pioneer Super Tuner that was used minimally as the owner preferred the lovely sound of the MGB exhaust! The radio installation is very tidy and the door panels are in their stock configuration, not cut for speakers. The door sills and door jambs are clean and free from dirt and grease. Please take a close look at the photos of the interior; it is really in fantastic condition! RUNNING / DRIVING CONDITION With ongoing maintenance like this car has had, it will come as no surprise that the MGB runs and drives very well. The car starts immediately whether warm, or cold. We are unable to identify any issues with major components, including; the engine and transmission, rear end, brakes and suspension. All gauges read well within limits and oil pressure is excellent at 60~ lbs., even when warm. The MGB has always been garaged, and driven occasionally to ensure that all of the systems are fully operational / functional. This car is very solid and the mechanical components are confidence-inspiring. The engine is strong and does not smoke, have any unusual noises, or exhibit any problems. There are no major leaks thanks to the care (and considerable investment) by the previous owner). We often see older MGB's with leaking rear ends, transmissions, steering rack, oil pans, etc. but virtually all of these areas have maintained as needed to eliminate these concerns. Of course, as with any British car, it can be expected to "mark its territory" with the occasional "seeping." The front suspension is very tidy, the brakes are all clean and recently re-done and there is no leaking of braking components or hoses. The MGB idles smoothly at approximately 900-1000 rpm, and does not have any drivability issues. The car runs cool, even in our 100+ degree California weather and has never over-heated or exhibited starting problems. The transmission shifts well and the synchromesh gears functions properly though all of the up-shifts. There is no noise in the transmission, rear end or engine. The clutch engages properly and without slippage, chattering, fuss or noise. The brakes work well and stop the car straight. The car passed the last safety inspection with major areas being within acceptable limits. The emergency brake holds and holds the MGB when in neutral. The engine and engine bay are original showing the expected normal amount of accumulation of dirt for a car that is almost 40 years of age. We have owned/driven a large number of MGB cars over the years, and can say with confidence, that this is a really nice running/driving car that will provide years of future enjoyment with ongoing care similar to what the car has had since it was new. The MGB recently passed the California smog test, one of the strictest states in the USA for smog requirements; however, based on its age it may be exempt in many parts of the country. We ask that you check prior to bidding on the MGB (most states exempt everything 25+ years old and some states (from our experience). Of course, the MGB is being sold with a clear, transferable title. OTHER - Clear California title with current California registration - Passed the California required safety inspection for working wipers, turn signals, lights, brakes, etc. SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE 1976 MGB - Engine: 1.8 L, 4 cylinder in-line, single cam, 2 valves per cylinder, push-rod, front mounted - Transmission: manual 4 speed, synchromesh all gears - Drive: rear wheel - Brakes: front-10.75" discs, rear-10" drums, power & dual master cylinder - Steering: rack and pinion - Fuel tank: 12 gal. US - Wheelbase: 91 inches - Turning circle: 32 feet Replacing the MGA in 1962, the MGB is a two-door sports car manufactured and marketed by MG Cars and its successors as a four-cylinder, soft-top roadster from 1962-1980. Structurally, the MGB was an innovative, modern design in 1962, utilizing a monocoque structure instead of the traditional body-on-frame construction used on both the MGA and MG T-types. The lightweight design reduced manufacturing costs while adding to overall vehicle strength. The MGB was one of the first cars to feature controlled crumple zones designed to protect the driver and passenger in a 30 mph impact with an immovable barrier. Wind-up windows were standard, and a comfortable driver's compartment offered plenty of legroom. A parcel shelf was fitted behind the seats. The majority of MGBs were exported to United States. In 1975 US-market MGB's received safer interiors, bumpers and other items to comply with U.S. emission standards and NHTSA requirements. The suspension and steering on the MGB, while similar to the MGA, did have a number of minor differences to improve handling. At the rear were the familiar semi-elliptic springs controlled by lever-arm shocks. The engine and transmission were also MGA sourced, but again in an improved state. Many sports car enthusiasts believe that MGB's epitomize the classic British sports car. Also, these cars are not only great fun to drive and economical to operate, they get great mileage. The MGB represents a fuel efficient solution to a fun, affordable and practical sports car. Many believe that the later model cars represent a tremendous value in the marketplace coupled with increased refinement and comfort. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background for any collector car being sold over the Internet. It is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: - How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have they completed (positive eBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "glamour shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a Surety Bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Does the seller enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales? ABOUT CLASSIC CARS LTD. - Classic Cars Ltd. has been in the same, small, California town for over 21 years. We operate a small "brick & mortar", indoor showroom, and specialize in the sale, consignment, and purchase of sports, high performance and specialty vehicles of all types. We have a particular interest in sports cars and unique vehicles. - The majority of our vehicles come from local, private owners and collectors, and many were sold new in California. We appreciate that rust free cars, with excellent documentation and history are especially attractive to our buyers both locally, and around the country. As a result, we do not purchase our collectible cars from "distressed" sales, such as wholesale auctions, salvage sales, or lien sales. We do not sell vehicles with salvage titles, or those that have a history of significant accident damage or repair. We have sold hundreds of unique, classic and collectible vehicles and regularly deal with buyers that have not had the experience of purchasing a large (both physically and monetarily) item on eBay, or through an Internet source. Our eBay feedback is 100% positive on all vehicle sales from customers around the globe and is a reflection of our commitment to accurate, complete, and thorough vehicle descriptions. - We have been shipping vehicles for years and have established excellent contacts that are not only high quality but very price competitive. We do not use brokers, terminal shipping or other discount methods. Call us or email for a quote directly to your home or office. We are often able to obtain quality enclosed transportation (the kind of travel this car deserves) for the cost of open shipping. - Please review our feedback on eBay (user name Never22Many) representing over 850 positive transactions to buyers all over the United States / World. - We are fully insured, bonded, and licensed for collector car sales all over the United States/World. - Classic Cars Ltd. carries a $50,000 Surety bond to cover financial transactions - We frequently sell vehicles to out of State / out of country buyers, and will be glad to provide references for buyers in your area. MISCELLANEOUS GENERAL INFORMATION - As with virtually all collector/specialty vehicles, we find that parts and resources are readily available for this (and most every vehicle), thanks in large part to the Internet. - In addition to the purchase price of the vehicle, California buyers will be subject to sales tax, a documentation fee, DMV transfer fees and license/registration. Out-of-state buyers will be responsible for the purchase price of the vehicle and any local taxes/fees will be the purchaser's responsibility to pay in their respective state. IMPORTANT NOTE: If the vehicle is delivered or driven in California and driven on California roads, sales-tax, license/registration and transfer fees will be assessed per California law. - While we encourage telephone calls to discuss this vehicle in greater detail we will not respond to inquiries asking "What is the reserve". Also, if you would prefer that we call you to answer any questions about the vehicle; shipping alternatives, etc. please e-mail us with your telephone number and will gladly get back in touch with you. - We encourage inspections of this MGB by serious, qualified individuals or professional inspectors. Please call at 925-846-1451 to arrange a convenient time. - As with any collectible vehicle of this vintage we are unable to provide a warranty or guarantee of condition. However, we make every effort to accurately represent our vehicles, and highlight both positive items as well as areas that require attention. We ask that prospective buyers consider our eBay history/feedback, standing in the community, length of time in business, and other factors when purchasing a collectible vehicle from Classic Cars Ltd. - Minor cosmetic issues/flaws may be present on every vehicle (regardless of cost) including small chips, nicks, scratches, etc. that can be seen on even the best restoration, or even a relatively new, used "pre-owned" vehicle. Also, ownership of a collectible / specialty vehicle is more enjoyable if the owner is familiar with the "realities" of these unique cars. Unlike more modern day vehicles, these cars require regular, ongoing care/maintenance and some mechanical knowledge, patience, and understanding can make the experience considerably more pleasant. That said, collector / "specialty" car owners will tell you (emphatically) that they love their cars and wouldn't trade them for anything!! - The information contained in this description is believed to be accurate but, in some instances, has been provided by the car's owner / owners or outside sources. As a result, we are unable to guarantee the accuracy of the information. We encourage verification of "numbers" and significant data prior to the purchase of any collector vehicle that you are considering. Out of state buyers are responsible for the high bid and any shipping costs. California buyers are subject to the appropriate sales tax, DMV transfer, and fees associated with the purchase of any used vehicle sale in the state of California. To avoid shipping the title with the car to our out of state buyers, we mail the title via Priority Mail. While shipping and transportation costs (if appropriate) are the responsibility of the winning bidder, we can assist with locating a suitable transporter. We regularly ship cars all over the USA/World, and can often times locate very competitive rates for transporting vehicles door to door, to a local terminal, enclosed, open, etc. Please call us for specific information/rates to your location. We meet some great people and fellow enthusiasts, and only rarely do we have problems with non-paying bidders. Please be certain that you are prepared to buy the car if you bid, or call us at 925-846-1451 before the end of the auction if we can answer any questions. If you have a "sunglass" rating or fewer than 10 feedback ratings on eBay, please call us before you bid so that we can discuss the bidding process, etc. If we do not hear from you, we reserve the right to delete your bid.
