Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE 1970 Ford Mustang Mach I Clear Maryland Title 351 Cleveland V8 4-speed Manual with Hurst shifter Shaker hood / scoop Bought from a farmer in 1999. Dry storage from 1999 – June, 2013. Under cover outside since. Ran and drove years ago, but needs total restoration now. Engine turns over. Please read the description fully and ensure that you can meet the obligations of this auction before bidding. This is my personal “barn find” car up for sale. It is a 1970 Mustang Mach I. I bought this car from a farmer in 1999 when I was a teenager, and other than driving it a few times right after purchase, it has stayed in storage ever since. I kept it in indoor dry storage until June, 2013. Since then the car has been outside, but kept under a car cover. I would very much like to keep the car and one day restore it, but I have other projects and other priorities, and being outside is going to cause the car to deteriorate. This is a good restoration project. I don’t want to see it turn into a “brave” restoration project or parts donor. Back in 1999 when I bought this car, it was sitting on a farm, in need of TLC. There was some body rust and the driver’s side frame rail was rusted out. The previous owner told me that it had the original engine, but I’ve never checked the serial numbers to verify that. I changed the oil, topped up the radiator and gas tank, and had the carb rebuilt. I got it running and took a few short drives around the neighborhood. The engine was very powerful, and the transmission shifted well. It was great to rev the engine and watch the shaker scoop move, but with the frame rust the car felt unstable, and then I discovered that there was water in the oil, and stopped running it. I suspected a blown head gasket, but worst case could be a crack in the block. I didn’t have the knowledge or time to tear down the engine, or the money to pay someone else to do it, but I did have access to indoor storage, so that’s where the car went. A few years ago I checked the VIN and confirmed that it was a Mach I, but the previous owner had the car re-sprayed, and they sprayed over the data plate, so I could not check the color, interior, transmission, etc. You can see inside the trunk that the car was originally green. This car needs total restoration, but it is worth it if you have the time, experience and money. There are 79,159 miles showing on the odometer. I turned the engine over just enough to confirm that it was not frozen. I did not want to crank too much as the cylinders are probably rusted, but realistically, the engine is going to require a rebuild after sitting this long. The clutch feels like it still works, and the Hurst shifter moves normally and goes in and out of gear. The shaker hood / scoop were on the car when I bought it, but they are not original. I do not have the original hood. The body is in decent shape, and appears to be solid around / under the hood, around the doors, and around / in the trunk. There is some rust in the quarter panels and around the rear window. All of the glass is in good shape. There is a gouge along the driver’s side. The car comes with a vintage set of Keystone rims with bolts and spacers. The rear tires were too big to fit, so they are in the back seat. The rear rims are the originals that were on the car when I bought it. Unfortunately I no longer have the original fronts, but I do still have the original Mustang hubcap set in the trunk. Underneath, I know that the driver’s side frame rail needs to be replaced, and the floor pans have also rusted through, but I’m not sure about anything else. You would need to get it up on a lift for a proper assessment, which I don’t have access to. There are traction bars installed on the rear axle. The black interior of the car is in original condition, and like the rest of the car, needs full restoration. The vinyl bucket seats in the front are still somewhat supportive, the carpet is tatty, the headliner is coming apart, and there are some cracks on the dash. The center console armrest is broken. There are vintage accessory gauges mounted on the steering column. I have set a reasonable reserve. I am not a deluded owner that has watched too many Barrett-Jackson auctions. I understand that this car is going to take a lot of work. It pains me to put the Mach 1 up for sale after all this time, but I have other priorities and I would much rather have the car go to someone that will restore it than watch it slowly crumble away into a heap. This car requires total restoration: Drivetrain, Body, Suspension, Brakes, Interior. If you can’t turn a wrench or pay someone else to, and if you’re a whiny tire-kicker, please look elsewhere. If you’re a serious buyer and know what you’re doing, please bid. PLEASE READ: A Paypal deposit of $500 is due immediately at the end of the auction. This deposit is non-refundable. The remaining balance is due in cash at the time of pick-up. Paypal, Checks and Bank Transfers are not cash, cash is physical, paper money. This car must be picked up and paid for within 2 weeks of the end of the auction. This car does not run, but the tires will hold air and it can be rolled. It will require a trailer for transport. If you plan to arrange a transport company you need to let them know that the car does not run, so that they do not show up expecting to be able to drive it on and off a multi-car transporter. You can come in person and hire a truck and trailer from UHaul just up the road likely for less than the cost of a specialty transporter. Bidders with zero or negative feedback must contact me prior to bidding – I will delete your bids otherwise. Do not send me angry emails when you bid without contacting me, and then find that I have deleted your bids and blocked you from further bidding on the auction. This car is sold AS IS, with NO WARRANTY. This car requires total restoration. Please examine the supersized photos, and contact me if you have any questions. Serious bidders are welcome to come see the car, just give me notice ahead of time so I can adjust my schedule. Payment is to be made in CASH at pick-up. Winning bidder must pay the $500 deposit immediately, and contact me within 24 hours of the end of the auction. The car must be picked up within 2 weeks of the end of the auction.
