Thanks for the Interest !!!1962 VW Baja BugNevada Desert Classic!!! RUST FREE Thanks for having a look at my Baja. Good Luck and Happy Bidding!!! I built this car with the intention of keeping it for a long long time...but...life changes and so I am proudly offering one of my favorite toys for auction here on ebay! I found this car in central Nevada smack dab in the middle of the driest part of the state. A one owner Nevada car since new...I had to have it. The original owner drove the car every day and at some point converted it to a Baja and took it out exploring the desert a few times a year. I was amazed by this car when I found it. Original everything everywhere...from the original oil bath air cleaner to the original "Sapphire I" AM radio. I could not believe I was standing in front of, and could buy, such a complete, original, rust free 53yr old VW Baja Bug. Finding a complete and original, one owner desert car since new, is such a rarity...especially a well done Baja. Most Baja's out there are cobbled together from wrecked bugs and spare parts for a second life. That is not the case with this car. The original owner made the choice to make his Bug into a Baja to enjoy it out in the desert. I could not walk away from this car, so I bought it and brought it home. Once home I set out to make this into a Baja for long distance exploration. Nevada is full of ghost towns and distant places and wild events like Burning Man and most have GPS coordinates...but the trick in the desert is to be able to get out there and most importantly, to be able to get back. Fuel mileage, reliability, and simplicity are a must when out in the desert and were keys to the earliest of the bugs ...so I set out to bring this Baja up to a standard worthy of a couple hundred mile trek into the many no man's lands that are Nevada. I decided to keep the car as original as possible in every way possible. The fame of the 1200cc and the first VW Bugs for that matter, was their bulletproof reliability, excellent fuel mileage and remarkable performance. This car is perfect for this type of application, so I went forward with making this car as good as I could. I shopped for German OEM Quality replacement parts whenever possible. Fortunately the local VW Shop keeps the best parts in stock, so I was able to purchase high quality parts in person in most cases. Here is a list of things that went into the 62.NEW German Transaxle Mounts, one front and two rearNEW German Axle BootsNEW German Main Oil SealNEW German Flywheel SealNEW Ignition Switch and two keysNEW Bosch Spark Plug WiresNEW NGK Spark PlugsNEW Pushrod TubesNEW Pushrod Tube SealsNEW Optima Red Top BatteryNEW John Deere Tractor Weather CapNEW EMPI Tri-Mill ExhaustNEW Bugpack Exhaust BaffleNEW Rear Cage BumperNEW Front Cage BumperNEW German Master CylinderNEW 4.5mm German Braided Mesh over Rubber Core Fuel LineNEW Brass Fuel Line to EngineNEW German Door Seals, Passenger and Driver SideNEW Vinyl Body GraphicsNEW EMPI Hood Tie DownsNEW Hood SealNEW EMPI Carpet w/FootrestNEW Door Panels, Front and RearNEW Fender BeadingORIGINAL 1962 1200 cc H4 engineORIGINAL 1962 4-Speed Manual TransaxleORIGINAL Solex 28 PCI Manual Choke CarburetorORIGINAL Oil Bath Air CleanerORIGINAL Vacuum Advance DistributorVINTAGE Off Road Racing Seats w/ SeatbeltsVINTAGE Black Vinyl Seat Covers w/ SnapsVINTAGE Wide Five Baja WheelsCUSTOM Headliner w/ Oak BowsCUSTOM Interior CUSTOM Seat MountsCUSTOM Blackout Painted Vintage Wide Five WheelsCUSTOM Interior Rear DeckCUSTOM Front Luggage Area Vinyl MattingRECONDITIONED Fuel TankRECONDITIONED Bosch Generator by Robert Bosch Company I built this buggy the way I wanted it. Tough, Reliable, Capable...Simple, Dependable and Efficient. I found a good solid desert Baja to start with. From the nose to the tail, I went through and replaced or fixed anything that needed attention. I decided to repaint the engine to it's original paint scheme and found a couple of pics online to go by as a reference. I pulled the gas tank out, cleaned it, repainted it and cleaned the metal fuel line from the tank to the rear as well. I replaced all the rubber lines with factory correct braided mesh over rubber core lines. The engine had typical VW leaks so I repaired them while I had the engine out. I installed a new main oil seal, a new flywheel seal and eight new pushrod tubes with sixteen new seals to stop the leaks. Next came New Empi Tri Mill style exhaust with a new exhaust baffle and a really cool tractor style weather cap flapper. I replaced the front and both rear transaxle mounts. Resurfaced the flywheel, pressure plate and clutch disk and installed a new OEM quality master cylinder and bled the brakes. I also put in a new 6 Volt Optima Red Top Battery as well as a factory reconditioned generator. The original 28 PCI Solex Carburetor is super simple, so I just needed to clean the jets ...which by the way are all externally accessible for repair/cleaning in the field. Again my goal was to build a reliable desert runner for deep trips into middle of nowhere, so I concentrated on all the mechanical systems first. Once the mechanical side was up to par, I moved on to the interior and exterior...after all, it had to look good inside and out too. I found a pair of vintage off road molded seats with nice black vinyl seat covers in South Lake Tahoe and made custom mounts for them from the stock seats. A new black carpet kit and new black door panels and a custom wood rear deck for mounting accessories came next. I replaced the door molding with new OEM quality seals. I replaced the hood seal as well and made a custom trunk liner for it and put on new hood tie downs. The original headliner was removed and replaced with a custom homemade one w oak bows by the original owner, I kind of liked it so I left it and spruced up the old grey interior paint that is under the headliner with some fresh new grey paint. The original turquoise interior paint has been cleaned and waxed and shines like new. Everything is original...even the windshield...think of it...an original VW branded 1962 windshield!!! All of the glass is original for that matter and in great shape. This is a deluxe model bug so all of the original window rubber came with the chrome inserts as well as the passenger footrest and factory AM Radio w/ extendable antenna. The exterior was in great shape. The tires have been used for many great seasons and they are perfect for off road, but may need replacing due to their age if you plan on using the car in town or on the highway. At some point the original owner repainted the car yellow. There is no rust and no body filler in this Baja. It is an off road car, so it does have a ding or two and scratches here and there, but it is really straight overall. I buffed out the yellow paint and added a set of simple graphics and blacked out the wheels and cage bumpers. New front and rear cage bumpers were put on to protect the nose and engine, and nice new black fender beading installed all the way around to give it a nice clean finished look. This Baja can be a street legal car. Although I have only used it as a toy, everything is there for it to be a daily driver. If you want an off road runner that will take you there and bring you back...that is what this Baja was built for. If you ever need parts, this car has been kept so stock that you can literally go to any auto parts store and get most basic replacement parts. Super Stock, Super Original, with a nice old-school Baja Kit...simple, reliable and efficient. Go anywhere freedom ...this car will surprise you when you see what it is really capable of...it's an absolute blast!!! The car comes with a clean Nevada Title in my name and Official Nevada Bill of Sale. I offer the winning bidder a 5% discount, have a look at the "payments and shipping" tab. Personal Inspection during the course of the auction is Welcomed and Encouraged. Feel free to send as many questions as come to mind....I will get right back to you...also, feel free to send your phone number if you would like to discuss the car, I will call you right away. Where do You want to go next? The Baja 1000?, all the trails around town?, The Rubicon?, or maybe the top of that hill you've stared at for years...this Baja will get you there and bring you back in style. An Unbelievable Desert Beauty, No Rust...All Fun...Low Realistic Reserve...Turn Key!!! Thanks again for Your Time and Interest!!! Good Luck and Happy Bidding!!!
