This is a 1971VW Bus, Riviera Camper. This year is the most highly sought after due to it being the last year of the 1600 upright "bug" engine, and the first yr of disk brakes. The Riviera pop-up is a nice feature because the roof cranks straight up, giving users much more room up top than the Westfalia. HISTORY: Up until a couple of yrs ago, this '71 VW bus resided on the west coast in California and Oregon. The guy I bought it from acquired this bus from West Sacramento, Ca. and shipped it to Massachusetts in Feb. 2010. I purchased it from him in Aug. 2011 for my son, bringing it to NJ where it is now. CONDITION: This bus is probably one of the most solid buses you will find in the northeastern United States! The previous has about $8K into it and my son another $2k. I bought this for him on his 17th birthday and he is since off to college ant lost interest. Mechanical: It was shipped from Cal. to a guy who has owned a VW garage for 50 yrs.…he is an expert in air rolled engines. The rebuilt engine with less than 5K on it was in the back of the bus. When it arrived the mechanic was in shock, noting that he hasn't seen one in such great shape in these parts of the country for a long time. It was virtually rust free! He dropped the tranny and went and re-installed the engine and tranny together so that it would be perfectly straight and aligned. He than went through the entire bus to make sure it was mechanically sound and replaced anything that needed replacing, including a new exhaust! Mechanically, this bus starts right up, purrs, and shifts ultra-smooth. EXTERIOR/BODY: After getting it mechanically sound, it was sent to a VW Body expert to take on the task of stripping the bus down to the bare metal, and repaint. The bus body is 100% factory straight. The bus is midnight blue with white top. (only imperfection is a small chips in the paint in the front - as pictured - a kid hit it with a rock!). The exterior is 100% rust free! 4 brand new tires - about 250 miles on them! Body guy trashed all the window seals and door seals. We have all new European seals ready to be installed. Rear seals already installed. INTERIOR: The previous owner gutted the interior. The cab area has since been repainted and minor surface rust removed. A 3/4" plywood sub floor was added to the back. She needs a complete interior makeover. The previous owner gave us all the camper components, which we still have, the could be used as templates to anyone who wants to restore her as a camper. My son was going to do the interior like the cabin of a yacht, button tufted vinyl seating, headliner & wall panels. The 2 brown velour front seats are from a more recent (last 70's) VW bus. What the bus needs to be completed: -new interior including all door panels, kick plates, and headliner. ( some people buy kits, others create their own) -rims and bumpers need a painting. -windshield wipers…motor works fine , needs arms and wipers -could use some new turn signal lenses -antenna -needs 2 rear side windows, have them but body guy sandblasted them by mistake - not too bad - we were going to cover them with navy blue block out vinyl - have the vinyl - will go with bus. new windows are about 50. ea. -needs new camper canvas for pop top.
