Vehicle Detail

1970 Mercedes 280 SELgreat shape http://youtu.be/kZf8KN79m5M for a video. http://s1229.photobucket.com/user/saltzchuck/library/1970%20280%20SEL for many more photos (might need to enter “saltzchuck” to view album). Known history is the car was purchased new in Portland Oregon from Ron Tonkin, see rear badge or plaque in photos. It lived its last 25 years or so in dry northeast Oregon, north of Pendleton. Engine is a 6 cylinder overhead can about 2.8 liters. Car VIN is 108.019-12-052441.You might note that I entered 17916 as the mileage. Ebay requires a mileage be entered. I have no way of knowing if you need to add 100000 or 200000 to this. Good things: The dry climate kept the body from developing rust. Body and paint is original two-tone, very classy. There is no history of accidents. Floor, rockers, wheel wells, etc are solid, there is almost no rust – it could be a good body donor for a 3.5 or 6.3 restoration project. The only significant rust is surface rust in the trunk well opposite the spare tire. Engine bay is very original, fairly complete and in nice condition including the firewall insulation. Transmission shifts well, however, I have not driven it much. Brakes work well. Car rides very well, it does not have air suspension but rather standard but heavy duty shocks. Spare tire matches the other tires. Original lifting jack, but no lug wrench. Glass is in great shape but for one small chip in windscreen on passenger side. Dash and door wood in good condition and all there, just needs to be refinished. Radio looks like original Blaupunkt Europa. Windshield wipers look to be the original stainless steel type. Trunk mat is pretty nice. Spare tire is good, might need air. Hubcaps match car but have a few scratches. Tires matching and in good shape with at least 50% tread. No owner’s manual but has the parts catalog that is in fair to good shape. One key. Doors open and close properly and are solid. Door windows are electric and try to move but have not been used for a while so they will not roll up and down. Most window rubber is in good condition. Glove box is nice. Has 2 front and 3 back seatbelts. Clear Oregon title in my name. Not so good things: The dry hot climate cooked the leather seats pretty much. Hood has a small hole where a battery that was too large was installed and the positive terminal post grounded on the hood when it was shut. Hood is discolored possibly from old style abusive car wash machines. Top of the car has some dime to quarter size chips possibly from being stored under plastic sheeting but not sure. The only significant dent is in the passenger side front door, you should be able to see it in one of the photos. The only other body damage is in the trunk, when you open the trunk lid the bottom of the opening frame has been pushed down slightly from apparently hauling heavy items that extended outside the truck. Engine smokes a little, see video. I have not driven it much but I changed the oil and I think it may clean up if driven. Engine compartment hood release is missing the T-bar handle so a small vice grip is required, see photos. Air conditioning has not been tested. Head liner is stained and separating along the edge in one or two placed. The seat leather is pretty wasted on all seats but they feel solid. Speaker was installed under the dash on the passenger side and not done properly, see one of the photos. Dash has a crack just to the left of the instrument cluster. Have not tried the heater, wipers, lights, etc so not sure what works and what doesn’t.
