Has original manuals and window sticker, as well as a stack of VW Dealer Service Receipts Clear Title, Private Sale Please read the description fully and ensure that you can meet the obligations of this auction before bidding. As is stated above, this is a NO RESERVE auction for my mom’s 2003 VW Beetle. This was bought new as her company car in 2003, then around 2009 she transferred it into her name, and it became her private car. So while the car technically has a history of 2 owners, my mom has been the only actual owner. This car has been very well cared for. The Beetle spent most of its life being garage-kept and since we had a Jeep too, it was stored over winter and used mainly in the warmer months. After it was transferred to private ownership, it was used more as a daily driver throughout the year. All services were performed at VW dealership service centers, until about 2009, when they refused to cover the replacement of the failed rear window regulators under warranty, even though it is a well-known factory defect. After that it went to an independent VW mechanic for servicing. We have a stack of (mostly dealer) service records that will go with the car, along with all its factory manuals, the original window sticker, and a little VW solar panel battery charger that it came with. The car passed MD State Inspection in 2010, after the “change of ownership” and a brief period in storage while waiting to get the rear window regulators replaced. Its last emissions test was a PASS in 11/2012. This Beetle has the 2.0L engine and auto transmission with the tiptronic gate present. It is a beautiful car, with less than 96k miles on the odometer. The engine runs great. The suspension is solid, and the 4-wheel disk brakes will stop this car on a dime. The Aquarius Blue exterior paint shines. There is the odd chip / nick in the front from road debris, but overall the exterior is in great shape, with no rust. The factory alloys look good and are not scuffed, and the tires all have good tread. The top is in good condition, but the edges around the rear window have come unglued, and need to be re-attached somehow. My mom taped it to prevent leaks, but because of that it doesn’t fold properly when you put the top down. Someone has to stand behind the car and “help” the window area to lay flat while the top is being put down, or the top will not fully retract, so this does need a permanent fix. VW recommended replacing the entire top with a new one from them for $$$$, but it seems like there must be an easier way, maybe even removing the factory glass window and having a soft plastic one sewn in. The black and grey interior is in excellent condition. The leather seats are not cracked, worn or faded. Likewise, the carpets and floor mats are clean and do not have any tears or fading. The door panels are clean too – often early-2000s VWs tend to get a dirty/greasy look to the interior door handles, but that is not present on this car. There is no smell of mildew inside the car. There are no cracks or broken trim pieces on the dash. The heat works well, and the A/C blows ice cold. The factory radio works. All interior and exterior lights work. The airbag light is showing on the dash, but no other warning lights are on. All of the electric windows work. As stated earlier, both rear window regulators were replaced with new units in 2010. If you are buying a used Beetle, you want to know that this has already been done by the previous owner, it is very expensive. Parts and labor cost us about $1900. Look it up on Google, it is a well-known factory fault, and VW lost a class action suit over it, but only for the hard-top Beetle, so they still refused to cover the cost of replacement on the convertibles. This has been a lovely, fun car for my mom. It has been maintained better than most Beetles, and the service records show the thousands of dollars spent over the years. About a year ago the transmission started shifting abnormally once the car had warmed up. Starting off in the morning everything would be fine, but after about 10-20 minutes the car would make hard, “jerky” shifts. This transmission is a “sealed unit” so it doesn’t even have a dipstick to check the transmission fluid. Once again, transmission problems are a known fault in the Beetle, and even though it is a factory fault and the car has less than 100k on it, it is outside the 7-year warranty period, so VW refused to cover the cost of diagnosis and repair, but was eager to replace to transmission with a new unit for $$$$. My mom took the car to an independent transmission shop with VW experience and was told that it may be just need a valve body rebuild/replacement (~$1100 in parts and labor) or it might need a whole new transmission. We took the car off the road and put it under a cover in the driveway while trying to figure out whether to spent more money to fix it or just sell it. After a long period of time, my mom made the difficult decision to sell the car, and put the money toward a 4WD vehicle to use in the snow. This would make a great car for someone that has been looking for one of these convertible Beetles, and doesn’t mind doing some mechanical work. Other than the listed problems, the car is in excellent shape, it is a one-owner car, and has been very well cared for. Fixing the transmission might seem like a hassle, but it you’re looking for one of these cars to keep, you’re better off getting this one and fixing it, than paying much more money for one with a working transmission that has a high risk of failure in the future. The pictures on the auction are current. I took them last week, after uncovering the car and giving it a quick clean. I also charged the battery and drove it around the yard a bit. The engine ran great, and the transmission was fine, but I’m sure that if I had driven it enough to warm up, it would have started with the hard shifts again. I’m happy to meet with bidders and let them look over and drive the car, just please contact me at least 24 hours before you want to meet. I will be available on Monday and Thursday this week, but my schedule is otherwise pretty tight. PLEASE READ: Payment is to be made in cash. Paypal and Bank Transfers are not cash, cash is physical, paper money. If you are a long-distance bidder, ensure that you will be able to have someone bring the cash payment and collect the title and car. I am listing this auction on behalf of my mother. It is a private sale. A $100 deposit is due within 24 hours of the auction's end. This can be paid through Paypal. The remainder is to be paid in cash at the time of pick-up. Bidders with zero or negative feedback must contact me prior to bidding – I will delete your bids otherwise. Do not send me angry emails when you bid without contacting me, and then find that I have deleted your bids and blocked you from further bidding on the auction. This car is sold AS IS, with NO WARRANTY. Please examine the supersized photos, and contact me if you have any questions. Serious bidders are welcome to come see the car, just give me notice ahead of time so I can adjust my schedule. Payment is to be made in CASH at pick-up. Winning bidder must contact me within 24 hours of the end of the auction. The car must be picked up within 1 week of the end of the auction.
