Vehicle Detail
The car is featured in this video with Jerry Seinfeld!! Wow!!! So - practically EVERY time that I drive around town I get people stopping me at lights, coming up to me in parking lots, leaving notes on my windshield - about memories that they have of THIS car when they were growing up! I feel like I'm driving around a museum attraction! That being said - here is the skinny on the car itself. Keep in mind that I am NOT a "car guy" so I'm giving you an evaluation as I see it from a typical driver standpoint. The Country Squire LTD was the top-of-the-line wagon in the Ford line throughout the 1970's. It came with leather seats, A/C, 8 track player and (as an option) the monstrous 385 series 460 V-8 engine that is present on this particular vehicle. The faux wood panels were carried over from a lineage that dated back to the 1940's. This particular configuration was the longest and heaviest station wagon ever produced by Ford Motor Company. As for this particular vehicle - it is completely original other than the addition of a CB radio. The car drives like it's supposed to - like a huge boat! It's truly like nothing being produced today in terms of ride and feel. The sheer SIZE of the car takes some getting used to - parking and maneuvering in tight spaces requires a bit of a learning curve! The motor is in fine shape, the transmission doesn't display any signs of trouble and the brakes are tight (although they will require some work rather soon as the calipers have some age and the bearings may need rebuilding). There is a small amount of rust on each rear quarter panel near and around the wheel wells. You can see this in the pictures. The overall condition of the body is quite good given the age of the vehicle. There are no major dents and the original paint, though faded, has a really pleasing tone to it. The interior is in good shape - with the carpet showing normal age and the front seat has some tears in the leather on the driver side. The dash is in great shape, the headliner is pristine end to end and everything works on the display panel (including the ANALOG clock). The rear door opens two ways (see photos) - barn door style and tailgate style. Pretty funky. The "hidden" headlamps work great (with the floor activated highbeam switch). The rear window retracts perfectly and the roof rack is in perfect shape. The "Carter for President" sticker is NOT original....just thought it would be a cool shout out to 1976. This car WILL need a new set of tires almost immediately. The current tires are several years old and are on the verge of destruction. The only other "issues" with the car are the brakes mentioned above and the windshield wiper switch (which seems to have snapped INSIDE the dash - likely a very simple replacement). Don't get me wrong - the car is NOT a 2014! It drives like a battleship, the windows are hand cranked, the stereo is 40 years old and it will likely need something every now and again to keep it working as a daily driver. But as of right now, everything is groovy. I'm selling it because I have 4 cars (2 too many) and I really can't justify something that is this self-indulgent and impractical (just broke down and bought a 2014 Subaru SUV to replace this - ugh). Again - I can't tell you how many people I've had approach me with wonder in their eyes when they see this thing pull up (and I drive it practically every day for the past 9 months). Even young people who were born way after this thing had it's heyday seem to "get it." There was a small child in the parking lot of our local supermarket two days ago who said to her mommy as she walked past: "Mommy - I want THAT car."
