Vehicle Detail

1968 Volkswagen Squareback. I bought the car about a year ago thinking I would paint it and have it for a weekend toy, but the reality of life meant that it just hasn't happened that way. Good car ready for a new owner who wants a fun old car or something ready to restore. Car has been in Arizona (previous owner) and Nevada (with me) for its whole life, and it shows. No rust on the underbody or in the fender wells, rocker panels - you know, the usual places these rust out are all solid on this one. Interior is in good condition. Seat vinyl is very good, headliner is perfect. Seatbelts are the original manually adjusted type. I also have some aftermarket self retracting ones that I never got around to installing that you can have with the car. Has a retro look radio installed that allows AM/FM reception as well as having input jacks for your iPod/iPhone or other music player. Tires are in good condition (maybe 8k miles on them?) and it has the aftermarket wheels on as well that you see in the photos. I also have the stock steel wheels, hub caps and beauty rings that are included in the sale. Includes a few other misc parts such as the original black plastic window cranks, extra sun visors, the original stock shifter (Gene Berg model currently installed), and misc replacement rubber seals for various windows. Car came with fuel injection originally, but as is the case with most of these, this one was long ago converted to dual carbs. Weber carbs in this case, which I just rebuilt less than 6 months ago. Engine starts right up every time, winter or summer, doesn't matter. Transmission shifts reasonably, but the 3rd to 2nd downshift is getting sticky - requires that you double clutch. I've driven it that way for some time now and it hasn't worsened. I don't think it is a big deal, but I am all for full disclosure so you know what you are buying. On Jul-03-14 at 06:51:13 PDT, seller added the following information: ** UPDATE - 3 JULY ** Several people has sent emails asking questions and wanting to see additional pictures, so I have added pictures of the area under the hood, the body just inside the door, and inside the front fender. People also asked for photos of the pan from underneath, but I have no way to get that shot - I can't elevate the car to get a photo that means anything. Under the hood - has carpet, a spare with the stock steel wheel. I think the spare doesn't hold air anymore - its pretty old. It does still have the foam insert block that goes between the spare and the front of the car. You can't see it in the picture, but it is there. Looks like the original jack (or at least a stock one) there too. The windshield wiper bottle and tubing is gone - you can see the gap where they once lived on the right side in front near the spare. Brake fluid bottle is there in the upper right like you would expect. I think people were interested in the area inside the door as a location where a lot of these have rust. These added pics show the drivers side - no rust. The passenger side is the same - no rust. In these pics you can see the beige paint and then some red paint underneath - don't know the story there, but I assume it used to be a different color. Pics inside the fenders were really hard to get. I took one in front of the front tire and one behind it. They look like what you would expect for a 46 year old car. Lots of grunge, but not all rusted out. There looks to have been some sort of coating inside the fender that is coming off - you can see it on the photo where the tire is on the left. It is a black rubbery looking coating. I'm guessing that somebody coated the inside of the fenders at one point, and it is now coming off. In any event, they are not all rusted out, which is what I'm attempting to communicate here with these photos. With respect to the pan, as I noted, I can't get pictures of it. It is in very good shape. I don't see any rust. It too has some kind of paint that is flaking and coming off. There is some light rust inside the battery tray, but that is pretty typical for these. I forgot to mention in the original listing that this car has all new brakes. The previous owner converted it to disk brakes on all 4 wheels. I do not have the original drums. Just to be clear, this car is in good shape considering its age and what most of these look like today, but it is not perfect by any means. It is a 46 year old car! I've done my best here to describe the car so that you know what you are bidding on, but I am not a VW expert.
