Cheers and Happy "eBaying"! Classic Cars Ltd. Pleasanton, CA 925-846-1451 BMW 5-SERIES E34 - HISTORY BMW uses an E code to designate each particular body style/platform. E stands for Entwicklung which is German for development. The E34 In North America the E34 was introduced for 1989 to replace its predecessor, the E28. At that time, only two models were available, the 525i and the 535i. Both equipped with inline 6 cylinder engines. The 535i was discontinued in 1993. Planet earth slipped into a depression from which it recovered a few months later when the M60 V8 engine equipped 530i and 540i were introduced. The 94-95 E34 line up consisted of the 525i, 530i and 540i. 1995 would be the last model year for the E34 even though E34s were still produced well into 1995. The E34 needed few styling updates since it was such a good looking car to start with. Updated mirrors were introduced in 1993, the 94 530i and 540i received a wide grill, the 525i received the wider grill as well in 1995 and also for 95 the lower bumper trim was painted in body color. For 94-95, the E34 530i was powered by the L, DOHC 32 valve V8 M60 engine, making 218hp. This car replaced the 535i. The large majority of USA cars were sold as automatics and the rare manual 5-speed transmission equipped examples are highly sought after. Performance was very respectable with some magazines reporting 0 to 60mph times in the mid 7.0 second range. THIS PARTICULAR BMW - SUMMARY This BMW came to us, as do the majority of our cars, from one of our very good customers. We have been dealing with this customer / friend for years and he regularly arrives at our showroom in some very interesting German sports cars and sporting sedans. One day, he arrived in this great BMW indicating that he had purchased another "toy" and that something had to go ( and he didn't want it to be his marriage!). We drove the BMW DINAN, fell in love and, as they say, the rest is history. For over 2 years, the "Dinan 5" has been an occasional use car by our owner when 2 seaters and SUV's are not being used. The BMW is a practical yet fun car to drive and represents a truly wonderful sporting sedan. This 530i is factory equipped with the strong 3.0 liter V8 that offers excellent performance in addition to very good fuel economy in part as a result of the cars manual 5-speed transmission. The BMW has had no major mechanical modifications and the DINAN upgrades have not negatively affected the BMW's comfort for five, great handling, sporty 5-speed and even very good fuel economy! Perhaps the best part is that this generation E34 cars represent a tremendous value, especially if well maintained, low mileage cars can be located. This car is one such example. While the E34 Dinan remains virtually 100% stock in appearance (with the exception of "M" style wheels), the Dinan badge is a tip off that the car has had factory approved improvements that will appeal to the BMW aficionado / enthusiast. The BMW "DINAN 5" is fitted with the following DINAN "upgrades" which we are told represented the DINAN Stage II package when installed. The BMW also spent time in exclusive Beverly Hills, Ca. under the care of German car specialists. A complete oil service was performed (124,668 miles) using the same synthetic grade oil that has been used in the car since it was new. The following observations were noted: - Tires appear almost new - Remaining brake pads 10mm (Front) / 8mm (Rear) - Blue brake pads - Fully functional - Adjustable Koni shocks (front & rear) - Large sway bars (Front 26mm / Rear 19mm) COSMETIC CONDITION - EXTERIOR / INTERIOR / ENGINE & TRUNK / UNDERSIDE With documented original delivery to Northern California, and having spent the vast majority of its life in the S.F. Bay area or Beverly Hills, it is no wonder that the BMW is free from the rust and "patina" that we see on "rust belt" cars. In fact, the car is not only extremely straight but there is no indication of any rust, rot or previous rust repairs. The photos show the underside of the car in addition to 100~ photos of the exterior, interior, engine bay and other areas of the car. All of the photos support that this is a very nicely maintained example of a DINAN prepared, rare 5-speed 530i. The cars exterior has been well maintained by its enthusiast owners. The paint is original with the exception of the rear bumper cover that was repainted as a result of a few minor nicks and the owner's desire to keep the BMW looking its best. That work was done to a high standard. The paint is in very nice condition and, with the exception of the usual minor imperfections found on any vehicle this age, the DINAN BMW shows very well. Close inspection reveals the characteristic small rock chips on the front of the car but none of the minor flaws detract from the appearance or attractiveness of the BMW. Of course, the car has been garaged for its entire life and received regular professional detailing to ensure that he BMW looked its best at all times for its proud original owner. Included is a front "Bra" that can be used should the new owner have an interest in doing so. Note: We have not used the bra since we have owned the car but it was installed on the car when we acquired the BMW. The body of the BMW is very straight and free from any signs of previous or present body damage. The panel fit is high BMW quality and a close inspection of all of the BMW including the trunk, rocker panels, lower front and rear fenders and engine bay reveal 100% solid, dry "California clean" panels. There are no signs of previous accident damage and the Car Fax report supports the lack of reported incidents. The interior is equally as nice as the exterior and has been well cared for by professional owners / drivers. The entire interior shows very well and the car has been smoke free for all of its life. The dash is excellent and the addition of the wood trim adds a beautiful touch to the interior. The interior has remained totally stock in appearance with the exception of the dramatically improved sound system as outlined above. The dash is fitted with the stock instruments, all of which are totally functional. The dash is totally free from cracks and damage and the car retains its stock steering wheel. The sound system has been upgraded dramatically and is exceptional although we are certainly do not consider ourselves audiophiles and cannot properly explain the quality of the components. We will share that the cars previous owner explained that the cost of the sound system was in excess of $6,000.00 including the mini disc head unit, multi CD trunk mounted changer and the custom speaker enclosures / speakers installed in the rear, trunk and front of the car. For those who have a better knowledge of these components, the following will provide additional details on the equipment: - Sony MDX C7900 receiver in dash (mini discs included) - Sony 10 CD changer mounted in trunk - JL speaker enclosure - LARGE JL speakers in enclosure and custom rear deck (Tastefully done) - a/b/s Amplifier Both front and rear seats are in beautiful condition and totally free from any rips, tears, or signs of wear. The door hardware and trim are also in excellent condition and the windows roll up smoothly and freely. The electric windows all work. The windows are tinted with a relatively dark tint. The headliner is excellent and the car has the original sun visors. The rear package tray is in beautiful condition and a close inspection reveals nicely concealed speakers in a custom (and costly!) enclosure. The BMW's trunk is very clean containing the original rear trunk liner and a carpeted mat. The large "speaker box" can be seen and contains components that could be removed. The spare tire and tools are in place and the rear tire well is as rust free as the rest of the BMW. DRIVING THE DINAN 530i Over the years, we have driven literally hundreds of BMW's and owned almost as many! They have been our choice as our regular high performance "drivers" and we love that they offer a wonderful combination of performance, handling, comfort and good looks. The E34 is popular for good reason but this particular car offers the best of both worlds. The upgrades have not only been tastefully done, but consist of the DINAN upgrades, arguably the premier BMW engineering company in the USA. All of the cars upgrades are high quality and appropriate BMW upgrades, not inexpensive poorly engineered. A few quotes from a 1995 Car & Driver magazine road test summarize our feelings about the BMW: "So where does all this leave us"? "The BMW 530i is a treat to drive and clearly the most entertaining companion for a run through the mountains." "A peak horsepower rating of 215 horses arrives at 5800 rpm, with torque cresting at 214 pound-feet at 4500 rpm (improved by the DINAN chip in this vehicle). That power is fed through a five-speed automatic transmission-a ratio for every occasion. With relatively modest power production in low- and mid-rpm ranges, this sophisticated transmission does a fine job of keeping the little engine percolating. Smooth and subdued at cruise speed, the V-8 snaps right to attention with a sharp stab of the throttle. And it has a great sound at high rpm: a heavily muted V-8 wail that sounds just like a Top Fuel dragster-somewhere in the next county." Whether cold or warm the BMW fires up immediately with a smooth idle. The engine is free from any noises and the car does not leak fluids. The clutch engages without fuss and as you shift from first to second gear you notice how solid and tight the car feels. No rattles, squeaks or indication that you're driving a quality BMW.a nice feeling. As you begin to drive you also appreciate the "green-house" affect that the DINAN BMW offers resulting in great visibility. Additionally you are reminded that the driving position is excellent and that the car would make a great long distance touring car in addition to being a practical, fast and fun everyday or weekend car for use on those twisty back roads. Once you gain momentum it is clear that this car is considerably more fun to drive than a stock 530i, especially in the "twisties." The suspension is taut, well damped and the steering precise and certain. The braking system is entirely rebuilt and the car stops straight and sure. The emergency brake is properly adjusted and fully functional. While not offensive or overly loud, the BMW has the perfect exhaust note as a result of the addition of a quality rear tip DINAN exhaust system. The combination of the sound of the fantastic in-line 6 cylinder and the throaty exhaust, especially in the higher rev ranges, has us reaching to turn off the cars sound system to better hear the car's engine. As the revs rise, the exhaust tone becomes increasingly pleasing. This particular car runs and drives extremely well and it totally sorted and ready to enjoy. The car was professionally built utilizes the best components and the quality of the suspension and mechanical components. The BMW is extremely comfortable under all driving conditions ranging from a daily commute to, well, more spirited activities. The BMW combines amazing good looks, precision and style and is a delight to drive.
