Cheers and Happy "eBaying"! Classic Cars Ltd. Pleasanton, CA 925-846-1451 BMW E30 M3 HISTORY At first, the 1986 BMW M3 (E30) was developed strictly for racing homologation purposes. A requisite 5,000 cars were to be built, in order for the car to compete in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC). Each car was fitted with flared wheel arches, a tall rear wing, stiffer suspension, and a Formula 1-derived, 195 horsepower four-cylinder engine - just as it would be run in the series. On the track the M3 proved to be very successful winning the debut season of the series ahead of opposition by Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Alfa Romeo, and Volvo. At the time the BMW M3 was considered little more than a race car for the street. BMW purists continue to say that this production model was BMW's "Cream of the M3 crop" with a more focused and purposeful look and feel than its successors. What did the experts say in various road tests? "...Driving the M3 is an absolute hoot. The handling is excellent, the ride is stiff but not rough, and, of course, the BMW anti-lock brakes are top of the line. The balance of the M3 is absolutely fantastic for a street car. The faster you go, the easier it is to drive."--Motor Trend December, 1986 A car that happened to know its way around the Nürburgring long before it was de rigueur. The car's strengths lie in its astounding balance, impossibly forgiving suspension, and rock-solid reliability. The Baron Von AssKicken styling and the peaky 7200-rpm four are just icing on the cake. --Car & Driver 1988 Peeling down a rock-lined pass, the E30 feels securely planted as I continue the attack, the chassis allowing me to gain confidence, and with it, speed. The ride is firm but perfectly acceptable-this go-kart can still slide when provoked but regains posture fluidly. Like all E30 M3's, it was designed to do one thing and one thing only: win races. European Car -October, 2011 RECOGNITION BY LEADING PUBLICATIONS -Automobile Magazine included the E30 M3 in their "5 Greatest Driver's Cars of all Time" under their 25 Greatest Cars of All Time. 2007 -The BMW E30 was recognized by Sports Car International in 2004 as the 6th Best Sporting Sedan for the 1980's and "Top Sports Cars/Sedans of the 1980's." -"The BMW M3 is a Sports Car in Disguise." Automobile Magazine DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE BMW STANDARD "3 SERIES" & THE E30 M3 BODY The E30 M3 differed from the rest of the E30 line-up in many ways. The M3, although using the same basic unit-body shell as the standard E30, was equipped with 12 different and unique body panels for the purposes of improving aerodynamics, as well as "box flared" wheel-arches in the front and rear to accommodate a wider track with wider and taller wheels and tires. The only exterior body panels the standard model 3-series and the M3 shared were the bonnet, roof panel, and sunroof. SUSPENSION The E30 M3 differs from the standard E30 by having a 5 x 120 wheel bolt pattern. The E30 M3 had increased caster angle through major front suspension changes. The M3 had specific solid rubber offset control arm bushings. It used aluminum control arms and the front strut tubes where changed to a design similar (bolt on kingpins and sway bar mounted to strut tube) to the E28 5-series. This included carrying over the 5 series front wheel bearings and brake caliper bolt spacing. The rear suspension is a carry-over from the E30. BRAKES The E30 M3 had special front and rear brake calipers and rotors. It also has a special brake master cylinder. DRIVELINE The USA E30 M3 was fitted with a Getrag 265 5-speed gearbox. The transmission was more of an overdrive unit than the cars produced for European consumption. The shift pattern was the standard "H", not the "Dog-leg" version. Rear differentials installed included a 4.10:1 final-drive ratio for US models. All versions were clutch-type limited-slip differentials with 25% lockup. The car epitomizes the definition of a "Survivor" and after being used when it was new, stored for many years by the original owner until July, 2012. It remains as original and complete as any E30 M3 that we have seen and will certainly have significant appeal to the BMW enthusiast / collector who has been searching for an unmodified, 100% stock BMW M3. Several years ago, the cars elderly owner (now deceased), made the decision about 12 years ago to donate his two cars (this BMW M3 and a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia) to his church. His donation included a specific request that the cars be stored for an extended period of time enabling the church to benefit from a higher value from on his kind donation. It was his opinion (and he certainly proved to be correct!) that both cars would appreciate considerably over the course of time based on their limited production, low mileage and condition. Upon his death, the cars were sold and the proceeds went to the church, as planned. When the M3 was subsequently sold by the new owner the BMW was properly brought out of storage with the following work being performed prior to driving or even starting the car. The car had been in dry storage, covered and started occasionally. Note: This information was provided by the gentleman that was directly involved with the M3 after it was sold by the church. The work was performed within the last few months and -Brakes inspected and needs addressed as required -Fluids changed (Brake & coolant) -Water pump changed within -New spark plugs -Recent complete tune-up -60,000 mile service to BMW specifications including complete oil service -New Michelin tires with fewer than 500 miles -ABS system checked & new relay installed The M3 is certainly one of the most original, long term ownership (virtually one owner from date of purchase in 1987 - July, 2012) unmodified to be offered in years. It is rare to see M'3 offered for sale as most are coveted by collectors / enthusiasts but to come across a car that has been "hidden" for over a dozen years is remarkable. As important is the fact that when the car was new it was used very sparingly by its mature physician owner, never abused, and, of course, never tracked or raced. This particular M3 has signs of being very well cared for by the one adult owner for all of its life. An inspection of the undercarriage and photos (part of the listing) suggests the car may not have even been driven in the rain! The body is perfectly straight with excellent original paint and even the "M" pin-striping as applied by the dealership when the car was delivered. This represents the highest rating on a car of this vintage that we ever seen on AutoCheck. Car Fax also shows a totally clean report and "Adds" a significant amount "Above Retail" due to the BMW's exceptional history and low, low mileage. SUMMARY The E30 M3 represents a rare, low mileage M3 that has a history of being cared for by one owner for close to 25 years. The car is in absolutely magnificent condition and is arguably one of the, if not the finest example in the United States. The cosmetic quality of the car is superb with even the most minor flaws requiring close critical inspection to be noticed. The front of the E30 is free from rock chips and damage and the car was garaged and properly stored for its entire life (and it shows). The interior is the same high quality and the photos accurately reflect the overall quality of the exterior, interior, underside and engine bay. The car has been inspected by BMW specialists with the following observations: - Tires appear almost new -Remaining brake pads 10mm (Front) / 8mm (Rear) -No rust or undercarriage damage -Fully functional lighting systems (Passed safety inspection) -In 100% stock condition with the exception of the change of "wear" items -Straight damage free body & exceptional paint quality We ask that you review the 100~ photographs carefully since, in the case, the old adage "A photograph is worth a thousand words" is very appropriate. Please contact us if we can answer any questions regarding this lovely M3 ( 925-846-1451). A DRIVE IN THE E30 M3 Over the years, we have driven literally hundreds of BMW's and owned almost as many! They have been our choice as our regular high performance "drivers" and we love that they offer a wonderful combination of performance, handling, comfort and good looks. The E30 is popular for good reason but locating original examples has become extremely difficult. Whether cold or warm the BMW fires up immediately with a smooth idle. The engine is free from any noises and the car does not leak fluids. The clutch engages properly and without fuss and as you shift from first to second gear you notice how solid and tight the car feels. No rattles, squeaks or indication that you're driving a quality high performance BMW.a nice feeling. As you begin to drive you also appreciate the "green-house" affect that the BMW M3 offers resulting in great visibility. Additionally you are reminded that the driving position is excellent and that the car would make a great long distance touring car in addition to being a practical, fast and fun everyday or weekend car for use on those twisty back roads. Once you gain momentum it is clear that this car is considerably more fun to drive than a stock "3-Series", especially in the "Twisties." The suspension is taut, well damped and the steering precise and certain. The braking system is excellent as a result of the improved M3 components, the M3 stops straight and sure. The emergency brake is properly adjusted and fully functional. The BMW has the perfect exhaust note from the stock exhaust system and the combination the high-revving 16-Valve engine and the wonderful suspension makes this car and absolute delight to drive. While the stock sound system is fully functional, we would much prefer to listen to the sound of the engine instead of the radio! This particular car runs and drives as it did when it was delivered new to its original owner. The BMW is extremely comfortable under all driving conditions ranging from a regular high end driver to a car that will be appreciated at any BMW gathering, show or special event. However, we make every effort to accurately represent our vehicles, and highlight both positive items as well as areas that require attention. We ask that prospective buyers consider our eBay history/feedback, standing in the community, length of time in business, and other factors when purchasing a collectible vehicle from Classic Cars Ltd. Please keep in mind that minor cosmetic issues/flaws may be present on every vehicle (regardless of the high quality of a particular car) including small chips, nicks, scratches, etc. that can be seen on even the best restoration, or even a relatively new, used "pre-owned" vehicle. Frankly, often times the photos make the vehicle appear to be in flawless condition and do not show the minor imperfections. The information contained in this description is believed to be accurate but, in some instances, has been provided by the car's owner / owners or outside sources. As a result, we are unable to guarantee the accuracy of the information. We encourage verification of "numbers" and significant data prior to the purchase of any collector vehicle that you are considering. VI.PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: -How long have they been in business? -How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive eBay feedback)? -How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? -Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? -Does the seller have a Surety Bond to protect the financial transaction? -What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? -Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? -Does the seller enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? -Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
