Vehicle Detail
Chevrolet used the slogan task force trucks to advertise its trucks from 1955 to 1959. 1958 was a year of considerable change to the vehicles, Chevrolet announced redesigned versions of its trucks for 1958. The changes included a redesigned grille, a two-tone paint scheme and the famous Apache designation. The Chevy Apache came into existence in 1958 when the Second Series were redesigned. The Apache was only manufactured for two years---1958 and 1959. The Apache has two engine options in the 1958 model year. The 1958 Apache comes with a 235.5-cubic-inch "Blue Flame Six" V-6 and a 283-cubic-inch "Turbo-fire" V-8 option. V-8 Turbo Fire V-8 option, with a two-barrel carburetor, produces 185 horsepower. The V-8 has a compression ratio of 8.5 to 1. Chevy offered a four-barrel version of this V-8, but it was not available on the 1958 Chevy Apache V-6 The Blue Flame Six V-6 option has a one-barrel carburetor and produces 145 horsepower. The compression ratio was rated at 8.25 to 1. Truck has four headlights instead of the previous two and features a shorter, wider grille running the width of the front end. Parking lights are now in the grille instead of being in the front of the fender and the hood is similar to 1955/1956 models, but with a flat "valley" in the middle. For the 1958 model year, all Chevrolet light-duty pickup models were designated as Apaches. They were a favorite of farmers and ranchers. The trucks are valued by collectors and old-truck restorers for their simple design and classic styling. Engine The 1958 Apache trucks featured a standard Thriftmaster 235.5-cubic-inch six-cylinder engine. It produced 125 horsepower at 4,200 rpm with 195 foot-pounds of torque at 2,000 rpm. It had an 8.25:1 compression ratio and used a single barrel updraft carburetor. A 137 horsepower 283-cubic-inch V8 with a four-barrel Rochester carburetor was optional. Its compression ratio was 8.5:1.Chassis The 1958 Apache pickup had a hot-rolled steel ladder frame with through-channel side members. The semi-floating type rear axle had a two-pinion differential. The front and rear suspension was provided by semi-elliptic leaf springs and piston shock absorbers. The Apache used a three-speed manual transmission. The expanding drum brakes had molded asbestos linings. Dimensions The 1958 Apache was 123 inches long, 75 inches wide and had a 114-inch wheelbase. Its front tread width was 60.75 inches with a rear tread of 61 inches.
