1964 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible / Hardtop "A True California Survivor" California Car Since 1964 - Last Owner for 30+ Years!! 4-Speed, Factory Hardtop, Desirable Factory Correct Riverside Red!! _____________________________________________________________ NOTE: Our listings sometimes get rather lengthy. However, we continually hear from out of state / out of country buyers (many of our clients) that they prefer the level of detail that we provide. However, if you are not prepared to read multiple pages of description, we ask that you review the "Specifications" on the car along with viewing the photos. Also, if you'd prefer, please call us at 925-846-1451 and we'll gladly discuss the Corvette and answer any questions over the telephone, including about our Buy it Now policies. Yes, the Corvette can be purchased prior to the end of the eBay auction. Again, please give us a call for details. ALSO, PLEASE NOTE: EACH TIME WE LIST A VEHICLE ON EBAY WE RECEIVE COMMENTS THAT THERE ARE NO PHOTOS OF THE INTERIOR, ENGINE, UNDERCARRIAGE, ETC. OF THE CAR. THERE ARE 100 PHOTOS OF ALL AREAS OF THE CAR BUT, WHEN YOU REACH WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE LAST PHOTO, YOU WILL NEED TO SCROLL TO VIEW THE REMAINING PHOTOS. IF YOU ARE STILL UNABLE TO SEE THE PHOTOS, PLEASE CALL US AND WE WILL PROVIDE A LINK FOR THE PHOTOS (IT IS A VIOLATION OF EBAY POLICY TO LIST THE URL ON THE EBAY LISTING). All of our photos are taken in natural light and we do not "Photo-Shop" or touch-up the photos in any way. The cosmetic quality of this 1964 Corvette (both inside & out) is outstanding and the photos accurately reflect the condition of this spectacular & desirable late 60's Muscle Car. The "madness" of various auctions continues around the country. We often times see a wide range of collectible cars / special interest cars sell for inflated amounts in the "heat of the moment." This Corvette is offered at a realistic price considering the cars quality & history and, unlike bidding on cars in an auction environment, you will have the benefit of extensive information & history on the car prior to making a buying decision. Should you have an interest in a pre-purchase inspection, we encourage a thorough examination of the Corvette. Equally as important is the fact that Classic Cars Ltd. has been in business for over 20 years and enjoys an excellent national / international relationship with 715~ positive eBay feedback items. We can provide references in addition to those left by customers at Yahoo Reviews, Classic Cars Ltd. Pleasanton, CA. (Please enter this information in Google to read our reviews) THANK YOU! CLASSIC CARS LTD. 925-846-1451 HISTORY - 1964 CORVETTE STRINGRAY With the Sting Ray on such a roll, it was prudent for Chevrolet to make only evolutionary changes to the 1964 Corvette. The two simulated air intakes were eliminated from the hood, though their indentations remained. Also, the decorative air-exhaust vent on the coupe's rear pillar was made functional, but only on the left side. The car's rocker-panel trim lost some of its ribs and gained black paint between those ribs that remained; wheel covers were simplified; and the fuel filler/deck emblem gained concentric circles around its crossed-flags insignia. Inside, the original color-keyed steering wheel rim was now done in simulated walnut. The 1963 model's shock absorbers tended to weaken as the miles accumulated owners began complaining of deteriorating ride quality. Chevrolet solved this problem with a few suspension refinements for 1964. The front coil springs were changed from constant-rate to progressive or variable-rate and were more tightly wound at the top, while leaf thickness of the rear transverse spring was also altered. With their wider damping range, the revised springs could better absorb both large and small disturbances, thus providing a more comfortable ride with no sacrifice in handling. Shock absorbers were reworked toward the same end. When subjected to frequent oscillation at near full vertical wheel travel, such as on very rough roads, the standard 1963 shocks tended to overheat. The 1964 Corvette arrived with a new standard shock containing within its fluid reservoir a small bag of Freon gas that absorbed heat. Chevy added more sound insulation and revised body and transmission mounts for the 1964 Corvette. It also fitted additional bushings to quiet the shift linkage and placed a new boot around the lever. The result was a more livable car for everyday transportation. Drivetrain choices remained basically as before: four 327c.i. V-8s, one three- and two four-speed manual transmissions and the Powerglide automatic, and six axle ratios. The 250 and 300 horsepower on 10.5:1 compression with a Carter carburetor fitted as stock equipment. This was an advantage, since the Holley was more easily tailored to specific needs because a larger assortment of performance parts were available for this carburetor. Although transmission options remained ostensibly the same for 1964, the two Borg-Warner T-10 four-speeds gave way to a similar pair of gearboxes built at GM's Muncie, Indiana, transmission facility. Originally a Chevy design, it had an aluminum case like the B-W box but came with stronger synchronizers and wider ratios for better durability and drivability. The wide-ratio version could be teamed only with the 250- and 300-bhp power plants; gear spacing's were 2.56:1, 1.91:1, 1.40:1, and 1.00:1. The close-ratio unit was for the more potent mills; its internals were 2.20:1, 1.64:1, 1.28:1, and 1.00:1. Posi-traction was still a bargain-priced option in 1964 at only $43.05, and it went into more than 80 percent of that year's production. The clutch-type differential was designed to send engine torque to the wheel with greater traction, as opposed to a standard open differential that transfers power to the wheel with lesser traction. If enthusiast publications liked the first Sting Ray, they loved the 1964. Motor Trend clocked a fuel-injected four-speed coupe with the 4.11:1 rear axle and Posi-traction through the quarter-mile in 14.2 seconds at 100 mph and streaked from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds. At the opposite end of the spectrum, Road & Track tested the 300-bhp Power-glide setup in a '64 coupe and recorded a 0-60-mph time of 8.0 seconds, a standing-quarter in 15.2 seconds at 85 mph, and average fuel consumption of 14.8 mpg. Sales of the 1964 Sting Ray reached 22,229 with a total of 13,925 cars being manufactured as convertibles. This represented another new Corvette record, if up only a little from banner-year 1963. Coupe volume dropped to 8304 units. THIS PARTICULAR 1964 CORVETTE In the most positive sense, this car represents a very high end, true "Survivor" or "Time Warp" Corvette. Unlike many 50 year old collector cars with little or no history, this car has a complete documented ownership history dating back to the date of delivery in 1964. It has been maintained in incredibly original condition and has the appearance of a car that left the showroom floor just a few years ago. Until one month ago, the Corvette was in possession of the gentleman who purchased the car 30 years ago from his next door neighbor who owned the car since 1964. While the car is often mistaken for a totally restored example, it is better described as a Corvette that has been very well maintained Stingray that left the factory just a few years ago. Unlike so many mid 60's Corvette's that have been modified this Corvette remains incredibly original. In some cases, the photos of cars on the Internet are misleading and, in "real life" the cars do not look as good as the photos suggest. We encourage a critical review of our close-up photos and assure you that the Corvette's show quality paint and body will not disappoint. Not only is this car in exceptional condition, the Corvette has a fascinating ownership history that includes documents supporting / confirming its time in California since 1964 and production history! The following are included with the Corvette: -Original (not a copy) Owner's Manual -Original Warranty Booklet -Original square "Pink Slip" showing transfer date to the most recent owner on 3/31/83 -Also, the '64 Corvette has remained in the same geographical area (within 100 miles) since 1964! FEATURES OF THIS PARTICULAR 1964 CORVETTE Specifically, the car is equipped as follows: - Factory Matching hardtop -327c.i / 300 Horsepower V8 -Factory 4-speed transmission -Posi-traction -Correct original factory gauges -Factory console in excellent condition (free from the typical significant seat belt "damage") -Stock factory '64 "spinner" hubcaps -Matching quality Michelin MX4 tires -Older AM/FM radio ( -Very original, tidy engine bay -Trunk detailed & includes wheel / jack & tools & trunk mat -Factory original spare tire We regularly see Corvettes that have been modified, abused and mistreated over the years but this car has been adult owned and cared for since new; and it shows. Not only is it cosmetically excellent but it represents a car that can be used and enjoyed for any number of reasons ranging from cruising to being entered in a wide range of car shows. One thing is for certain, the car will be accepted in virtually any venue. "THE NUMBERS" We feel that it is important to decode the significant production numbers, particularly on a high end restoration like this Corvette. Please let us know if we can clarify any of the decoding or provide additional information. The trim tag on the Corvette decodes as follows (Note: We have provided photos of the trim tag and the VIN tags on our listing but it was difficult to get a clear photograph): VIN #: 4 / 08 / 67 / S / 103599 (40867S103599) Number in VIN Significance 4 1964 08 Body Series - Corvette 67 Convertible S Assembled in St. Louis, MO 103599 Production Sequence # NOTE: This car was an early production example, the 3,599th convertible produced in 1963 (See below) Production information suggests a build date of October 1963 and this is supported by the cars trim tag that supports the cars codes as follows: TRIM TAG 40867 4 = 1964, 08 = Corvette, 67 = Convertible 923AA Riverside Red exterior S St. Louis Production ENGINE NUMBERS The engine number reads 10124 decoding to a 327c.i. / 300 horsepower HIGHLIGHTS - 1964 CHEVROLET CORVETTE - Purchased new by Earl Shellenberger on November 8, 1963 -Delivered new to Harry May Chevrolet Cadillac Inc. -Owned by Mr. Shellenberger from 11/8/63 to 9/23/64 (Less than 1 year) -Mr. Shellenberger drove the car a total of 13,326 miles -Ownership transferred to Mr. Carl Smith on 9/23/63 -Mr. Smith had possession of the car in San Jose from California from approximately 9/24/64 - 9/24/83 -On 9/24/83 ownership / registration was transferred to the cars current owner (a neighbor of Mr. Smith) who owned the car for 30~ years Note: The car's most recent owner was an avid -The Corvette has been in California since 1964; close to 50 years! -The original California square "Pink Slip" documents the date of transfer to the cars most recent owner and will be provided to the cars new owner (copy in the event of a California sale) -Original plastic "Chevrolet" folder for documents listed below -Original Owner Protection Plan documenting the cars 1st and 2nd owners is included -Original "Owners Guide" (Owner's Manual) also included (not a reproduction) -Original AM-FM Chevrolet Corvette Operating Instruction brochure -Original 1964 Tune-Up Specifications page included -1964 Workshop Manual included -'64 Corvette brochure with photos of a Riverside Red convertible Corvette (shown in photos) -Correct / original California black & gold license plates (front & rear) - Original and in beautiful un-restored condition CONDITION SUMMARY - 1964 CORVETTE The cosmetic condition of this Vette is truly exceptional. The combination of a totally restored exterior and the unbelievably original interior and California trim make this Corvette the "Survivor" that true collectors / enthusiasts seek. About 2 years ago, the car received a complete very high quality repaint in its factory correct color of Riverside Red. The car spent months in the body shop to ensure that the work was of the highest quality and the result is one of the nicest finishes that we have seen on a Corvette. The paint is totally "flat" with no signs of orange peel, checking or defects that detract from the overall appearance and beauty of the car. The body is laser straight and reflects the hours of preparation to get the fiberglass body in arguably better condition than when the car was new. There is no overspray on any of the trim as a result of the car being totally disassembled in preparation for the repaint. Of course, some of the rubber trim, interior pieces and other "soft items" were sourced from quality manufactures. It is very important to note that, unlike many "restorations" this Corvette was done professionally and it shows. True Corvette enthusiasts / aficionados will appreciate the difference and the value of a correct and proper restoration, especially on a rare original like this California Corvette. Mechanically, the car is very strong and drives exceptionally well. The undercarriage is dry with no major leaks from the engine, rear end or transmission. The cars 300 hp engine does not disappoint delivering the kind of performance and torque that is unique to the V8's of the 1960's and 1970's. The owner reports that the entire engine and driveline has been rebuilt to ensure reliability and solid performance. A recent compression and leak down test supports the strength of the car's engine. NOS (New Old Stock), or completely rebuilt components were used in the rebuild and an independent inspection (within 100 miles) confirms that all mechanical components remain in excellent condition. The inspection did point to a few wheel cylinders that were beginning to show minor leaking so, as a precaution, the car received all new brake wheel cylinders, brake lines, front brake hoses and turned brake drums. Additionally, a few of the front suspension components were changed at the mechanics recommendation as a result of a few very minor signs of crazing. The car passed the California required safety inspection and has completely functional lighting systems. It is smog exempt as a 1964 model year (any vehicle older than 1975 does not require a smog inspection in California). Of course, the car received new rubber trim, aluminum stainless trim as needed (either re-done or replaced) and engine fittings, clamps, etc. All areas of the car (engine bay, trunk and interior) have been kept detailed and in clean condition at all times. The Corvette has not been stored for extended periods of time and used occasionally but regularly. In addition to being a beautifully restored car, this car will appeal to the muscle car / Corvette enthusiast whose interests are more performance oriented. In the most positive sense, this car epitomizes the no frills, higher performance 60's muscle cars that were not weighted down with heavy unnecessary options. After all, performance was the name of the 60's and, in our humble opinion; this Corvette represents the epitome of the classic mid 60's Corvette Stingray. In addition to the purchase price of the vehicle, California buyers will be subject to sales tax, documentation fee, DMV transfer fees and license/registration. Out-of-state buyers will be responsible for the purchase price of the vehicle and any local taxes/fees will be the purchaser's responsibility to pay in their respective state. As with any collectible vehicle of this vintage we are unable to provide a warranty or guarantee of condition. However, we make every effort to accurately represent our vehicles, and highlight both positive items as well as areas that require attention. We ask that prospective buyers consider our eBay history/feedback, standing in the community, length of time in business, and other factors when purchasing a collectible vehicle from Classic Cars Ltd. Please keep in mind that minor cosmetic issues/flaws may be present on every vehicle (regardless of cost) including small chips, nicks, scratches, etc. that can be seen on even the best restoration, or even a relatively new, used "pre-owned" vehicle. Also, ownership of a collectible / specialty vehicle is more enjoyable if the owner is familiar with the "realities" of these unique cars. Unlike more modern day vehicles, these cars require regular, ongoing care/maintenance and some mechanical knowledge, patience, and understanding can make the experience considerably more pleasant. That said, collector / "specialty" car owners will tell you (emphatically) that they love their cars and wouldn't trade them for anything!! The information contained in this description is believed to be accurate but, in some instances, has been provided by the car's owner / owners or outside sources. As a result, we are unable to guarantee the accuracy of the information. We encourage verification of "numbers" and significant data prior to the purchase of any collector vehicle that you are considering. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: -How long have they been in business? -How much experience do they have with collector cars? -How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive eBay feedback)? -How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? -Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? -Does the seller have a Surety Bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? -Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? -Does the seller enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? -Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
