Vehicle Detail
I have owned this Probe since 2002, and have put 80,000 miles on it. I have 6 vehicles registered/insured and I am looking to get another, so something needs to go. The car has some issues, but perhaps you will consider it worth fixing, or maybe just part it out. I am setting the opening bid at scrap value, no reserve. I have clear KY title in my name. If you expect to drive it away, I will expect to complete transfer paperwork. I could possibly deliver it within a few hundred miles for expenses. The Probe actually gets down the road just fine. I drove it 300 miles to Indy and back the other day, and I do not hesitate to drive it anywhere. The motor runs great and does not use oil. The turbo works good. The exhaust has mostly been replaced with elbows and straight sections, and a Summit muffler. With the reduced backpressure, the turbo spools up pretty quickly and hits the boost limiter/fuel cutout at 12 psi. If you are not familiar with this feature you can read about it on a Probe forum, for example performanceprobe.com or probetalk.com. The car has a wastegate controller installed by the previous owner that could be adjusted...it's just a little brass valve. The transmission grinds pretty easily going into second gear. You have to shift it hard and fast, otherwise it will grind. Once it is in second it will stay, so it seems to be a shift fork or linkage issue rather than a gear cluster problem. And the shifter motion from second to third is a little tricky. You have to do an exagerated dogleg motion from 2-3, otherwise it hangs up. There does not appear to be any external adjustment to correct this. For several years I have mostly been shifting it first-to-third, which actually works pretty well but can be awkward in some traffic conditions. And you can't really get it into second from third. As far as replacing the trans, it is my understanding that the turbo 5 speed is unique. A standard 5 speed will bolt in but will not last very long behind the turbo motor if driven hard. The clutch is fine although the slave cylinder slowly loses fluid and so it needs to be topped off now and then. CV joints are quiet. The windshield is cracked on the passenger side. This happened in 2005. The cracks have been pretty stable but one crack is advancing into the driver's view, this could be an issue if your state has inspection on incoming vehicles. The passenger side headlight motor is bad. I usually have a block of wood under the headlight to hold it up, but I took it out for the pictures. I ran off the road and crumpled the driver's side front fender and door, and knocked the mirror off. I have the door trim panel (missing in pictures). There was already a dent on the left rear quarter panel just ahead of the wheel when I got the car. Has AC but it does not work. I have never looked to see what it would take to fix it. Has cruise control that works fine. There is a CD player/radio, but the antenna is broken so the radio does not come in. The driver's seatbelt will not retract. It is stuck in the extended position. Tires are Goodyear Eagles, 195/65R15. Fronts are worn close to legal tread, rears still have some miles left. Brakes work OK, although the first year Probe has unvented rotors. The variable shocks still seem to work. Has a new starter, good battery. I have the rear package tray also. The picture with the hatch up shows the size of the cargo space..I recently transported a 110 cc dirt bike, plenty of room. I am going to miss the Probe but it is time for it to move on...
