Vehicle Detail
1988 GMC Sierra 3500 Crew Cab 3+3 6.2 Diesel General: Wow! Talk about a clean find. We bought this truck for plowing, but it really is a shame for a survivor like this to spend the rest of its life as a yard truck. As you can see, the truck is in extremely clean condition and has been well taken care of. Owned by Springettsbury Township in Southern PA its entire life until we purchased it, and they did an excellent job of keeping the truck fresh. Paint is in fantastic shape for a 25 year old truck -- the usual marks and dings and some fading in areas, but no rust, no obvious body damage, and no serious problems at all! The undercarriage looks excellent as well and still retains much of its paint -- not much rust there either! See pictures for close ups. Check out a demonstration video of the plow and engine running here: Powertrain & Drivetrain: The engine is a 6.2 GM Diesel engine that starts easily and runs excellent. This truck did sit for quite a while before we purchased it so once in a while it will take a few extra cranks to start. Overall, the engine has more than enough power for the truck and will be able to take whatever you're planning to throw at it. Transmission is the standard 3-speed, non-OD automatic GM trans -- practically bulletproof, but doesn't allow for really high top speeds. In fact, we drove this truck over 150 miles to our shop at around 50 mph. You're not going to win any races, but the low end power is just where it needs to be for plowing and around town/country driving. Front driveshaft needs a ujoint replacement. It clunks quite a bit when it is in 4 wheel. Differential is fine, but the u-joint/cv joint is quite worn. Plow: Meyer 8.5 foot power angle snowplow, E47 pump with a recently replaced "C" valve, missing one spring but otherwise complete and ready to go! The plow itself is in pretty good shape for its age -- shows a few weld repairs but no rot or serious rust! Pump also performs well and shows no signs of leaks or trouble. The plow, when hooked up, will drain the battery overnight. The solenoid may need to be replaced or just a switch can be installed to shut power to the plow pump off. Either way, the plow is off the truck now as the snow season is all but over here. Other Notes: Overall, this truck is in excellent shape for its age. It is not going to win any races, but it's a very useable and solid utility truck or plow truck. The utility box does show some rust and rot, as you can see from the pictures. The box itself is the worst part of the whole truck. If you want to replace it, that's a possibility but it's very useable even with the rust. The tires are also in good shape, although the rears do show some where. The steer tires are like new, as you can see from the pictures. Very occasionally, the truck will shake a bit at slow speeds when driving. Not a huge deal, but worth mentioning. The truck also has 2 brand-new batteries. This is a rare truck, especially in this kind of condition! No matter what your plans are, this one is definitely a keeper, and I'd love to see it on the road instead of just sitting at our yard, waiting for snow.
