Delivered New in California! 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible Originally Assembly in San Jose, CA. Assembly Plant 11/20/1964 Desirable Factory 4-Speed, 289c.i. V8, Power Convertible Top, Power Steering, Seat Belts, Back-Up Lights, & Steering Wheel Gauge Package & Spinner Hubcaps / Whitewalls Restored in Factory Produced Wimbledon White / Blue Interior / Boot Cover ____________________________________________ PLEASE NOTE: EACH TIME WE LIST A VEHICLE ON EBAY WE RECEIVE COMMENTS THAT THERE ARE NO PHOTOS OF THE INTERIOR, ENGINE, UNDERCARRIAGE, ETC. OF THE CAR. ACTUALLY, THERE ARE 100 PHOTOS OF ALL AREAS OF THE CAR BUT, WHEN YOU REACH WHAT APPEARS TO BE THE LAST PHOTO; YOU WILL NEED TO SCROLL TO VIEW THE REMAINING PHOTOS. IF YOU ARE STILL UNABLE TO SEE THE PHOTOS, PLEASE CALL US AT 925-846-1451 AND WE WILL PROVIDE A LINK FOR THE PHOTOS (IT IS A VIOLATION OF eBay POLICY TO LIST THE URL ON THE eBay LISTING). Finally, some of the photos (especially those taken in brighter sunlight) suggest the interior is a light blue. In reality, it is a beautiful darker blue as shown in some of the earlier photos in the listing. The combination of white (Ford factory Wimbledon white) and the blue interior makes for one of the prettiest combination, especially in a convertible. NOTE: Also, all of our photographs are taken in natural light and are not altered using Photoshop or other methods. THANK YOU! CLASSIC CARS LTD. 925-846-1451 ___________________________________________ FORD MUSTANG - HISTORY First conceived by Ford product manager Donald N. Frey and championed by Ford Division general manager Lee Iacocca, the Mustang prototype was a two-seat, mid-engine roadster. This would later be remodeled as a four-seat car penned by David Ash and John Oros in Ford's Lincoln-Mercury Division design studios, which produced the winning design in an intramural design contest suggested by Iacocca. When introduced in April, 1964 the Mustang caused quite a stir. The car was designed by Ford to compete with sports cars of Chevrolet, Dodge, Chrysler and Plymouth in the market for affordable sports cars with a wide range of power. The first Mustang had three engine choices ranging from a small, six cylinder engine producing just over 100 horsepower, to larger horsepower V-8 engines with various horsepower ratings. Also available were a variety of transmission options including three speed manual, automatic, and the fully automatic "C4" for those that were interested in cruising with their "Favorite Gal"! In the early years of the Ford Mustang, the car was only available as a Coupe or convertible. When first introduced, $2400.00 would buy a standard Mustang and for twice that amount you could purchase a top-of-the-line car with upgraded interior, exterior trim and larger V-8 engine. The Mustang was so successful that the car sold 22,000 units on the first day and over 100,000 cars were sold within the first four months. Nearly 20,000 Mustangs were sold by the end of the first year. INTRODUCTION TO THIS PARTICULAR 4-SPEED 1965 MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE At last count, we have owned or represented over 20 Mustangs during the past several years. There is no doubt that the cars are popular and for very good reason. The Mustangs are great looking, fun to drive and economical to own. They also bring back wonderful memories to the many "Baby Boomers" when they owned the cars in High School or College. We have seen virtually every model from the desirable convertible to coupes and fastbacks and our preference continues to be the "Drop Top" Mustang like the example featured in this auction. Also, when it comes to quality we have also had a range of cars including original cars, those that have seen better days and completely restored examples like this early 1965 Mustang (actually produced in late 1964 but carrying a "C" code). However, we ask that prospective buyers seeking a truly exceptional Mustang take a very close look at this car. While the description is very long, it will provide the serious buyer with details that separate this Mustang from the large majority of cars being offered for sale today. Unlike what some have referred to as "Pigs with Lipstick" (Cars that look OK at first glance but have been re-done just to sell) this Mustang convertible was properly restored by professionals from the bottom up and directions from the car's owner to not only make it look great, but to complete a proper, comprehensive rebuild of virtually all of the cars mechanical components. The restoration included a totally rebuilt engine (now with approximately 2,000 miles, transmission, rear end, front end & braking system. Cosmetically, the Mustang was media blasted to bare metal to ensure that even the slightest body imperfections could be addressed. The body, with all trim removed, and then received an extremely high quality re-paint in its original color, a new interior, new chrome & trim and reassembly and extensive detailing. No shortcuts were taken and any upgrades were very subtle (more on that later) and made to perform the Mustangs performance, drivability and reliability. The car remains virtually 100% stock ion it its configuration and has the appearance of a Mustang that is only a few years old. The Mustang retains the colors as produced in late 1964 as supported by the cars original (not a reproduction) door trim tag. The VIN # confirms that the Mustang was a 289c.i. V8 and the trim tag supports the cars original color scheme of Wimbledon white /blue interior & boot and a black power top. 1965 FORD MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE / SPECIFICATIONS - Wheelbase: 108 in. - Length: 181.6 in. - Width: 68.2 - Curb Weight: Less than 3000 lbs. VEHICLE CODING / ID TAG VIN # (5R08C159727) 5 / R / 08 / C / 159727 decodes as follows: 5 = The last indicates the model year (1965) R = Assembly Plant (R = San Jose) 08 = Convertible C = 289c.i. Note: With the exception of a few minor and virtually unnoticeable performance upgrades (more on this later), this 1965 Mustang is configured as it was when it left the nearby California (San Jose) assembly plant (just 30 miles from our showroom location!) in 1964. This includes a V8 289c.i. engine, 4-speed transmission, power steering, power top, spinner hubcaps, in-dash AM radio and other options shown below. The original delivered price of a Mustang with options would have been close to a whopping $3,500.00 Base price of $2,614.00 with options as follows: - Wimbledon white paint (no charge) - 289 c.i. V8 engine (+$108.00) - Accent group (+$27.70) - Rally-Pac (Y=Tachometer / Clock) (+28.56) - Power top (+$54.10) - Closed emission system (=$5.30) - Back up lamps (+$5.30) - 5 x 695 x 14 Whitewall tires (+$33.90) - Power steering (+$86.30) - AM radio (+$58.50) - Deluxe belts & tinted glass (+$38.45) - Padded visors (+$5.70) - Console full length (+$51.50) This Mustang convertible will be of interest to the enthusiast collector that is looking for a nicely optioned more "Sporty" example with a factory 4-Speed & V8. While the car appears 100% stock, it has received some very subtle modifications to improve the performance including a fresh (with a reported 2,000~ miles on the engine) and a very fresh high quality, "No Shortcuts" restoration. The following are worth noting: - Produced in nearby San Jose assembly plant (Just 30 miles from our location!) - Totally rust free body with exceptional paint in original color scheme of Wimbledon White / Blue Interior & Boot - Black Top - Beautifully Re-Done Interior - Upgraded Mustang logo floor mats - Factory floor mounted 4-Speed car - 289c.i. V8 - Recently rebuilt completely including new pistons, valves, rods, etc. & balancing of all components - Dual exhaust - Restoration included media blasting to bare metal, all new rubber, chrome and other trim (interior and exterior) - Factory Rally-Pac (not working at this time - Electronic ignition results in tachometer connection issue) - Power convertible top in very good condition - Power steering - Factory original functional AM radio / speaker - Spinner hubcaps - Factory jack / tools - Matching blue car cover (included) THIS PARTICULAR 1965 FORD MUSTANG - HISTORY Considering that the mid-60's Mustangs are approaching 50 years of age (hard to believe but true!) it is increasingly difficult to locate a local California car that has undergone a comprehensive and truly quality restoration of the body, interior, trunk, engine bay and mechanical components. We have owned and represented more Mustangs' that we can count and this example is simply one of the best that we have had the pleasure of owning. The car has had a reported 3 owners since new. The cars most recent owner managed the restoration (in other words, paid the bills!) using high quality vendors for all of the work. The paint and body work on the Mustang was completed by a specialty shop that was looking for a vehicle to "advertise" the quality of their restoration work. Subsequent to the restoration the car was entered in a number of shows and where it received recognition for its high quality paint & body work. Positive comments were also made regarding the cars limited ownership, documentation and combination of options (convertible with a 4-speed floor mounted transmission). Having led the "Easy California Life" when it was delivered new in late 1964 it is apparent that the excellent care was carried on by subsequent owners. When the car became a candidate for a restoration it was a very solid example but being 35+ years old, it was clearly time to receive a full "freshening." Finally, we feel it is very important that cars have documentation of the work that was performed during the restoration along with original supporting documents. The new owner of the Mustang will include the following: - Factory original Owner's Manual with indications of dealer servicing through 36,000 miles) - Photos of car in the restoration process and evidence that it was media blasted to bare metal - Receipts for paint, body and cosmetic restoration (Including $3,500.00 just in chrome and trim!) - Receipts / documentation of mechanical restoration including: engine, rear end, upgraded performance parts (Edelbrock carburetor / intake, high performance coil, etc.) - Manuals for Edelbrock carburetor / intake & Flowmasters - Summary of work performed for the entire restoration by category Since we have not owned the car since it was new, we are unable to certify the mileage with any degree of accuracy. The current odometer currently reads 83,524 and the previous owner indicated that the car has been driven approximately 2,000~ since the restoration was completed. Based on the condition of the car, we see no reason to doubt that the mileage could be actual. The odometer and speedometer work but the speedometer registers a higher speed than you are actually travelling due to the change in the rear end ratio. A re-calibration would be good or, in the alternative, markings on the speedometer as to the actual MPH that the car is travelling. Within 100 miles the Mustang was inspected and will be delivered with a "Passed" safety inspection. The car has fully functional lights, turn signals, brake lights, running lights and dash lights. COSMETIC CONDITION - BODY / PAINT / TOP The Mustang convertible is finished in the lovely shade of "Wimbledon White", an especially attractive color on a convertible and a difficult to find and rarely seen blue interior with matching convertible "boot" cover. The convertible top is power and works great. It is finished in traditional "Ebony" with a perfectly clear window and the top itself is excellent as the top structure. Unlike some of the "flashy" colors from the 1960's, this car has an elegant, understated look that is well received by virtually everyone that sees the Mustang. The appearance of this Mustang is exceptional and many would be proud to have the car entered in their car show / club event. Since the restoration, the car has been used as a weekend "occasional car", parked in the garage and covered (high quality blue cover included). The paint is in fantastic condition with a bright shine and is totally "flat", devoid of "orange peel", over-spray and even the most minor imperfections. Minor flaws are difficult to identify due to the high quality of the restoration. When restored, the car received a total and complete first quality re-paint in its factory original color of Wimbledon White (as documented on the door trim tag). When the car was repainted, all of the cars trim was removed with virtually all of the cars exterior chrome and other trim being replaced with quality components or receiving very high quality refinishing / re-plating. This includes but is not limited to the bumpers, tail lights, front grill, sill plates, mirrors and much more). The independent inspection found to be totally (and unusually so, especially for a convertible) free from any signs of rust in the floors, rocker panels, fenders, engine bay, trunk and other typical rust prone areas. Please refer to the detailed photographs of the underside of the car. The frame was also found to be totally straight and damage free. The lack of undercarriage structural damage supports the owner's report of "no accidents." The panel fit, including the doors, trunk, and hood are excellent by any standard but unusually so for a convertible Mustang of this vintage. The doors close solidly, line up well and close with a solid "thud" and are totally free from the "sagging" that can exist on earlier convertibles. The trunk and hood are well aligned and open and close easily and seal tight. The trunk, hood and doors benefited from new seals as did the windows. The front hood and trunk have never been forced closed on any objects, so there are no dents in either panel. Both trunk and hood stay open as a result of proper ongoing maintenance. The Mustang is fitted with a power top option (switch mounted below the left side of the steering wheel) that is fully functional. The top is in very good condition and free from rips, tears and fading. It is devoid of significant signs of wear and tear and has a plastic window that remains very clear. The Mustang has been used with the top in the "Down" position in its recent life. The convertible is covered by a rear top "Boot Cover" is color coordinated with the lovely blue interior and looks like new. The front windshield is in very good condition with no significant cracks, stars or chips. Close inspection reveals the car is fitted with the old style (correct for the era), aluminum windshield wipers and arms. The remaining window glass is excellent with no major damage, cracks or stars. There is a VERY small chip (pencil chip size) low down in the middle of the windshield (not in the line of vision) that has been repaired and is not spreading. The windows roll up freely and the chrome trim surrounding the windows is excellent, free from pitting and even the slightest surface rust. INTERIOR The interior on the Mustang is in beautiful condition and has had the benefit of receiving mostly new components including seats (front & rear), door panels, carpet, and trim). It is consistent with the condition of the exterior. The Mustang's interior is very stock and it still retains the factory radio, factory "Rally Pac" (Tachometer & Clock) but has been received replacement OEM style material upgrades giving it the appearance of being stock. There are no modifications to the dash or interior. The tachometer and clock are not working at this time and the cause of the issue has not been investigated. We do know that the car has a Petronic style ignition that may not be compatible with the tachometer in the Rally Pac. The carpeting, dash, seats, door panels, and all other interior items are all original style and in excellent condition. The seats show virtually no wear and are in excellent structural condition. There are no rips, tears or cracks on any of the interior panels, or dash. Even the driver's side seat bolster shows no wear, tear or damage. Because of the limited use of the Mustang by its careful owner's, the interior does not show the usually wear seen on your average Mustang, especially a Mustang convertible that is typically exposed to the sun and can have faded panels, cracked dash, split seats, etc. Additionally, we often see Mustang convertibles that have been heavily modified with engine changes, incorrect wheels, incorrect steering wheels and even body modifications (wheel well flares, etc.). Not so with this car. The dash is totally free from any sun wear or cracks. The gauges are all original and functional, and the lenses are clear, not cracked, or damaged. The gauges all read within acceptable ranges. The current reading on the odometer is 83,524 and the car can be expected to have up to up to a few hundred additional miles before its sale (as a result of showing the car to local, prospective buyers and our occasional use, especially as the weather warms up!). The rear seating area, carpeting and panels are also in excellent condition. As produced in 1965, the Mustang was not required by law to have seat belts. However, this car was produced with front seat belts when it left the factory and still has those belts in place (they are date coded from Ford Motor Company). The carpeting is excellent front and back and Mustang log rubber mats cover the front & rear carpet. MECHANICAL CONDITION The Mustang has the appearance of being been very well cared for its entire life. The file documents the extensive mechanical and cosmetic restoration history and includes the factory correct / Original owner's Manual. While space (and time!) prevents us from listing the repair history over the course of some 45 years, the Mustang was its owners "Pride & Joy" and it was never neglected mechanically or cosmetically. A summary of recent mechanical repairs / maintenance within the last 2,000~ miles include: - Complete engine rebuild (machine receipt included for work) - Brake, suspension and rear-end upgrade receipt / documentation - New clutch (receipts included) - New tires, mufflers / exhaust (Flowmasters), battery & more - Rebuild of 4-speed transmission - Media blasting & body work ($In excess of $7,500.00) - Rick's Pony Parts (Trim, chrome, rubber, weather-strip (Over $3,400.00) - Miscellaneous parts / labor ($Estimated at $2,000+) - NAPA Auto parts - Restoration components / miscellaneous ($2,000~) - Car Cover The list goes on and the investment in the restoration, not considering the Mustang convertible itself, is substantial. During the previous 100 miles the car was inspected by an independent mechanic who found a few minor issues that were immediately addressed. His overall assessment of the Mustang revealed that it had excellent "Bones" is an excellent example of an original California car that received a proper and correct restoration. This particular convertible Mustang runs and drives extremely well, indeed. Of all of the Mustangs we have owned, from a mechanical standpoint, this particular car is as good as any that we have had in recent memory. The recent mechanical rebuild is certainly the reason for the cars strong performance. The Mustang does not have the typical leaking that we see on so many mid-60 cars, runs cool, sounds great and starts immediately whether warm or cold. In fact, a turn of the key and the car comes to life almost before you can fully engage the ignition! The floor mounted 4-speed transmission make the Mustang great fun to drive in addition to giving the car additional performance. The transmission shifts smoothly and without slippage and a receipt in the file documents a complete rebuild. There are no unusual noises in the transmission, rear end, or drive-line. The change of gearing (from stock 2.88 to 3.35 results in improved "low-end" but also allows for very good cruising at highway speeds. The tires are a matching set with excellent tread and remaining life. Older Mustang's (and other collectibles, for that matter) are often times plagued with a variety of "Gremlin's" that can result in some items being nonfunctional. Our experience tells us that a car with a number of non-working items has not been well cared for by its owner and repairs can be costly. It is refreshing to see a 1965 Mustang where everything works including the following: - Lights - Parking Lights - Bright Lights - Turn Signals - Brake Lights - Heater, Blower & Heater Fan - Power Top Motor & Assembly - Interior Lighting - AM In-Dash Radio - Dash Lights - Reverse Lights The Mustang's engine compartment is very original with the exception of a few minor items to increase the performance and reliability of the car. Specifically the following were added to the Mustang at the time of restoration: - An Edelbrock intake manifold - Edelbrock Performer carburetor - Petronic style ignition - Hi-performance coil - Chrome valve covers - Chrome air-cleaner - Rear end gearing upgraded to 3.25 from stock gears of 2.88 Outside of these minor items "Dress-Up" items. It is important to note that he car does not have any of the high performance or "Hot Rod" additions that often times detract (IMHO) from the originality of the early Mustangs. As a pre-1975 vehicle the car is not subject to smog inspections in California and is exempt in most states in the U.S. Please check your local smog requirements. This Mustang will clearly be of interest to collectors / enthusiasts that are looking for a rare, Mustang convertible that has had the benefit of limited owners and was an original produced and delivered car. The car is completely and totally reliable, probably in large part due to the care that it has received from its careful owners. With continued care it is certain to provide the new owners with the same kind of reliability and pleasure for many, many more miles. MISCELLANEOUS - The Mustang has the original lug wrench, spare tire / wheel and comes with a jack - We are often times asked if we would drive a particular car a long distance. Personally, we would not hesitate to drive this particular car across country (and enjoy every minute of the trip on Route 66!) Please note the requirements listed below for out of state buyers / drivers. - The original owner's is included along with a file of receipts, records and history referenced in the narrative. As nice as the car is, it is a used vehicle and, as such, normal, minor imperfections can be found on this (and virtually any used vehicles). Imperfections may include, but are not limited to, minor paint flaws, minor wheel scrapes, and other defects that may not detract from the overall appearance of the vehicle, but do exist on virtually any car that is driven on the street. We have; however, done our best to describe the car as accurately, and completely as possible and ask that you discuss the car with us should you have any questions or doubts about purchasing a vehicle on a long distance basis. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet.
