I have driven and loved this car for the last 5 years. It gets 45-50 miles per gallon all day, which has definitely been my favorite feature! My husband bought the vehicle with 4,000 miles on it shortly after it had been wrecked and was declared a total loss. He had it restored to almost mint condition, and handed it over to me and our three kids. He chose not to have the steering wheel replaced and instead cut the airbag and screwed the steering wheel back together. We had no problems with it (except for a loose headliner which he chose to cut out) until a knocking noise began a few months ago. A mechanic at a local transmission shop diagnosed it. He said that the dry clutch, a component related to the transmission that is equally as expensive as a transmission in this case, had gone bad, likely from the impact of the 2005 wreck. He told me that day that I could drive it until it just completely went out. And then, the next day...I was slammed into in the middle of a busy intersection! A guy "slid" through a red light in the rain and caused minor front end damage. So, that's the state of the car. Well-loved and a little abused, but perfect for someone who loves a tdi and knows how to mess with them. I was told that I could get a used transmission installed for $1600. And the front end could be fixed for less than $1500. As my kids get bigger, I need a bigger car! If it wasn't for that, I'd put a lot more than that into the car just to keep it. It's sleek, sips fuel and rides (or used to ride!) like a dream. If you want the car, I'd love to sell it to you, but you'll have to come get it. I have no way to deliver it. Cash payments or bank checks are acceptable.
