With many years of focused experience I specialize in 1957 to 1982 Corvettes. There is no other dealership that can better meet your needs if you would like to buy, sell, or just find out more information about your Corvette. This is simply a one man operation, and this is not my full time employment. I do it because I enjoy it. I am a collector and enthusiast and therefore look for cars that excite me. I do not purchase at dealer auctions; each car is hand picked by me because it is special or rare to me and because I like it. contact information Seven Hills Motorcars, Inc. 9213 Blue Ash Rd Cincinnati, OH 45242 sales@sevenhillsmotorcars.com Contact a representative directly: Matt: 513.708.1468 vehicle description Seven Hills Motorcars is pleased to offer this numbers matching 1968 Corvette convertible with the high performance L79 327ci 350hp engine and numbers matching 4-Speed transmission. The car is very original with a ton of potential. It is finished the rare, iconic, and most prized color combination of Red/Red. This is the original and correct color scheme, verified by the trim tag pictured below. I have not dropped the gas tank, but the tank sticker (build sheet) is visible from the filler neck and should also verify this car as an original red/red L79 327ci/350hp Corvette if it is legible. I have also included close up photos of the engine stampings and engine block casting date to show they are original and correct. This car runs well, drives nice, and is very usable in its current state, but definitely has some room for improvement. Even still, this is least expensive numbers matching L79, chrome bumper, convertible Corvette that runs and drives I have seen on the market period. Please peruse the list of numbers below and all of the photos to get a true sense of how correct and original this Corvette really is. "All Different All Over" That is a quote from the 1968 Corvette sales brochure. Corvette when through a major body change in 1968 to the "Mako Shark" body style. The new design was destined to become a classic. Corvettes for the next forty years, including the C4, C5 and the current C6 generation, would follow the same basic lines and design principles to be recognizable as a relative of the 1968 trend setter. For the first time the coupe featured removable roof panels (T-Tops) and a "pop out" rear window. Wheel width increased to seven inches. 1968 was the first Corvette without side vent windows and the last with the ignition switch on the instrument panel. For better weight distribution the battery was moved from the engine bay to a compartment inside the car behind the seat. As a side note, this Corvette is not a dealer auction vehicle. We hand pick each car after careful inspection. Our Corvettes come from owners who expect their cars to go to someone that will give the vehicle the same care and attention as they did. We invite and encourage you to examine the car in person or have the car inspected. Please take the time to scrutinize each picture. We photograph each vehicle to the greatest extent so you can feel confident about your purchase. If you have a question about the Corvette, just give us a call. numbers Please note when checking the numbers that not only do the correct stampings and casting numbers appear on the parts, but all of the dates are also chronologically correct. This means that all of the parts were made and assembled in the correct order. For example, all of the dates for the individual engine components and the engine casting date should obviously precede the assembly date of the engine because the parts had to be produced before they could be assembled. All of the parts I checked follow this rule and are dated correctly. item number description* VIN 194678S423847 The "67," verifies that the car is an original convertible. The sixth digit, "8," is the model year, 1968. The seventh digit, "S," is the plant where the car was produced, St. Louis. The last five digits are the build sequence, meaning this is the 23,847th Corvette produced for 1968. It also places the car's build date in June of that year. Please note that part of the original VIN tag has deteriorated away. There is a specific photo of the VIN tag and title below. Engine VIN Stamping 423847 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 423847, are stamped on the engine pad meaning this engine is original to this car. Body Build Date K27 "K" corresponds to June, and the "27" is the twenty-seventh day of the month meaning this car has a body build date of June 27, 1968. Engine Code V06I8 "V" means the engine was build in the Flint, MI plant. The "06" is the sixth month of year and the "I8" is the eighteenth day of the month meaning the engine was assembled on June 18, 1968. Suffix Code HT This means the motor was intended for an L79 350hp application with a manual transmission and without a/c and ps, which is correct for this car. Engine Block Casting Number 3914678 The engine block has the correct 3914678casting number. Engine Block Casting Date F 15 8 "F" is June, The "15" is the fifteenth day of the month, and the "8" is the last digit of the calendar year so the engine block was cast on June 15, 1968. Intake Manifold Casting Number 3927184 The intake manifold has a 3927184 casting number. This the intake was used on 1969 350hp Corvette applications, but since it is dated correctly and this is such a late 1968 it is very reasonable this intake was installed at the factory. Intake Manifold Casting Date F 3 8 "F" is June, The "3" is the third day of the month, and the "8" is the last digit of the calendar year so the intake manifold was cast on June 3, 1968. Surge Tank 3016340 The original aluminum Harrison surge tank has the correct 3016340 stamping. Surge Tank Date Code 68E "68" is 1968 and "E" represents May so the surge tank is dated May of 1968. Clutch Housing Casting Number 3899621 The clutch housing is correct with a 3899621 casting number. Transmission Main Case Casting # 3925660 The main case of the transmission has the correct 3925660 casting number. Transmission Extension Housing Casting # 3857584 The extension housing of the transmission has the correct 3857584 casting number. Transmission Side Cover Casting # 3884685 The side cover of the transmission has the correct 3884685 casting number. Transmission Date Code P 8 H 12 The "P" means that this is a 4-speed Muncie. The "8" is the model year. The "H" is the month code indicating June and the "12" is the day of the month. So this transmission is dated June 12, 1968. Transmission VIN Stamping 423847 The last 6 digits of the car's VIN, 423847, are stamped on the main case meaning this transmission is original to this car. Windshield JX "J" is May and "X" is 1968 so the windshield is original, made in May of 1968. This is correct as it predates the build date of the car. Passenger Window JX "J" is May and "X" is 1968 so this window is original, made in May of 1968. This is correct as it predates the build date of the car. Left Front Wheel Stamping K 1 8 6 20 AG "K" means the wheels are original Kelsey-Hayes as they should be, the "1" means they were made at the Romulus, MI plant, and the "8" means they were made for 1968. The "6" is the sixth month of the year and "20" is the twentieth day of the month. This means the wheel was made on June 20, 1968. "AG" is a code that was used on wheels that were intended for a 1968 Corvette. Right Front Wheel Stamping K 1 8 6 20 AG "K" means the wheels are original Kelsey-Hayes as they should be, the "1" means they were made at the Romulus, MI plant, and the "8" means they were made for 1968. The "6" is the sixth month of the year and "20" is the twentieth day of the month. This means the wheel was made on June 20, 1968. "AG" is a code that was used on wheels that were intended for a 1968 Corvette. Left Rear Wheel Stamping K 1 8 5 11 AG "K" means the wheels are original Kelsey-Hayes as they should be, the "1" means they were made at the Romulus, MI plant, and the "8" means they were made for 1968. The "5" is the fifth month of the year and "11" is the eleventh day of the month. This means the wheel was made on May 11, 1968. "AG" is a code that was used on wheels that were intended for a 1968 Corvette. *All information obtained from Alan A. Colvin's Corvette by the Numbers and Mike Antonick's Corvette Black Book. condition Exterior This Corvette basically looks in person just as it does in the photos. The paint has a high gloss and smooth finish overall. However, the paintjob has some apparent age and blemishes, which is evident in the photos. The chrome and other brightwork on the car shows well overall for the condition of the car. There is some light pitting and corrosion in the expected areas around the underside of the bumpers and inside corners where the factory plating is thin, which is visible in the photos. The front bumper is in slightly better condition than the rears. The doors open and close well. The convertible top is in obviously need of repair. It will latch in the front or back, but it appears it has shrunken a bit and is hard to completely latch down, especially in this cold weather. There are no major spots or blemishes in the paint that have been intentionally excluded from the photos. I have done my best to accurately and objectively photograph the car and show all of the flaws, but some are too small or cannot be picked up by the camera. One should really view the car in person to get the best and most accurate idea of what the car really looks like. The left hood latch needs some adjustment, but the hood closes fine. The car does have some rust issues and rust around the windshield. The tires appear to have about 70% tread left. The wheels are in good condition with a nice finish. Interior The red interior is in decent condition. The seats show very little wear and have no slits, tears, or split seams. They are not worn in the typical areas such as where the driver gets in and out. The carpet shows some age, but has no rips, holes or stains. This includes the rear carpet, which is often neglected. The Corvette has an aftermarket radio, which works well. The center console is cracked, which is visible in the photos. The dash is in great condition with no cracks, fading, or sun damage. This car has not been smoked in; there are no burn marks or aroma whatsoever. Mechanical This car is in decent mechanical condition. The car is totally usable in its current state and there are no major issues I am aware of that immediately affect the drivability of the car. The car starts right away every time, runs well, and idles well. The car does not pop out of gear and the clutch feels good. The shifter itself could be adjusted and tightened up. There is no blue smoke when driving the car, just a puff when it is first started. The brakes do not pull to one side or the other. The car drives nice; I have not had it on the highway, but it feels great on the road. There are some items on the car that do not work such as the horn. There is an audible note of an exhaust leak. There may be other troubles with the car that I have possibly overlooked so I would suggest that the buyer inspect the car in person if possible. None of the problems I have noticed make the car unusable in its current state, but in an attempt to be totally honest I must disclose them. The entire vacuum system for the headlights and wiper door works correctly from both their respective switches on the dash and override switches. The wipers themselves do not work when the wiper door is open. As with most 1968-71 Corvettes the fiber optic light monitoring system is not totally functional. All of the gauges work with the obvious exception of the clock. The speedometer has worked, though a bit sporadically, since we have had the car, but the odometer does not turn. The turn signals work. The blower works and blows correctly on all speed settings. This Corvette is still nice to drive, especially with the 4-speed and top down on a nice day. A note on the fiber optic light monitoring system. We consistently receive many questions about the purpose of this system, exactly what it is and what it does. The sole and main idea behind the fiber optic light monitoring system is to simply confirm that all of the exterior lights, headlights, indicators, tail lights, etc., are working and to make the driver aware of a a burned out bulb. Each lamp on the outside of the car has an actual fiber optic cable the runs to an indicator on the center console. There are nine small indicators on the console and each has its own finer optic cable. When the bulb goes on the light travels through the fiber optic cable and illuminates the corresponding indicator on the console. If someone does not remember to plug the cable end into the lamp housing, does any work to the center console, or if there is a break in a connection or anywhere along the cable, that indicator no longer works. As one can image, over time this is very common. The system is very fragile and almost every driver quality Corvette we receive from 1968 through 1971 has at least some of the fiber optics that are no longer functional. The system was so temperamental and unnecessary that it was only used on Corvettes from 1968-1971 and was deleted by Chevrolet for the Corvette in 1972. Overall Condition Overall this 1968 L79 convertible is optioned extremely well and is a very desirable Corvette. With some work this car could easily be worth more than twice the asking price. Numbers matching is extremely important in Corvette pricing, especially with the higher performance engines like the one in this car, and as one can see, this car very original and correct. The value of these cars has gone up exponentially in the past 10 years. They are all solid investments for a collector. Cars like this are the Barrett Jackson stars of the future. One could enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than your purchase price.
