Vehicle Detail
1970 Subaru 360 Van. I purchased this van sight unseen via eBay. The previous owner gave me a folder full of invoices (I lost count when the rough total got above $10k) from several shops in the San Diego area for work done on the van and yet it still wasn't running. I brought it home; changed the fluids, plugs, re-built the carb, had the gas tank chemically stripped / cleaned / painted, replaced the fuel lines, installed an electric fuel pump, new fuel strainer, rewired the rats nest of basic electrics, replaced the accelerator / clutch cables AND.... it started immediately. Imagine that. Really strong for a glorified 2-cycle 25hp air-cooled garden tractor engine. I drove it around the block and realized that the brakes were only good for speeds under 3mph. The master brake was replaced with a modern Wilwood, new brake lines and DOT5 fluid. The brake cylinders at all four wheels were gently polished inside and given new seals. The front brake shoes were relined with a very expensive surface that will probably still be stopping this van long after I'm dead. Since the van was now starting and stopping I replaced the headliner and reupholstered the seats in what I hoped was a color close to the factory red. I painted the door cards with SEM vinyl paint in the same color. Some of the door cards were originally in beautiful shape. The left rear passenger card is terrible and will definitely cause problems with the concours judges. So will the black marine carpet I inexpertly fitted to the floor. You can do better. I consider the van to be a 6-7 out of 10. It's a relatively rust free California vehicle, the floors and body are really solid. Around the windows are the bitter tears of some very light surface rust. It's made out of tin so you should probably have an indoor home for it. Whoever painted it did a miserable job of masking for overspray but other than it presents well. There's a scratch on the windshield where someone stupidly ran the wiper without benefit of an actual blade, not very visible except to the anal retentive. Overdrive can be elusive but I've built a new shifting rod which will (hopefully) make the selection of that gear easier for the next owner. The horn button beeps the horn like that scene out of Little Miss Sunshine and I've been unable to diagnose the problem so it's currently disconnected. It's not really a problem because you are noticed wherever you drive this delightful box. It's like driving around with your hair on fire. You will return to this vehicle after it's been parked for 10 minutes and find swarms of people around it. Someone photographs it every few minutes when it's parked in front of my house. Japanese television came and did an entire story about Subaru around this vehicle. Watch me attempt to placate the producer by making up things about Subaru in the US. I've never owned a vehicle that garnered this much attention. You've been warned. Test drives, shipping and phone conversations are all gleefully possible. Please don't bid if you don't have any money. I'm selling this to make room for yet ANOTHER Subaru van. Be careful, these things are habit forming. Here's a small video I made of this little gem doing what it does best. Moving slow and getting nowhere fast. http://vimeo.com/52273856 On Feb-13-13 at 19:00:42 PST, seller added the following information:
