Vehicle Detail
For sale is my 1974 Volkswagon Thing or Type 181. The body has been restored and is in good shape. Paint decent and is a very rare original Avacado green color. The tub is sitting on a 1994 Geo Tracker 4x4 frame and running gear that has 20,xxx actual original miles on it. It had 13K on it when swapped - Tracker was a roll-over. The Thing has the Tracker dash and seats. The Thing has the rare hardtop and I also have the soft-top frame although it will need a new canvas. I have the original air ducts that only 74's came with - I just haven't gotten around to installing them - they will be included. The "now" trunk has carpeting in it so small items can be hauled. It has a great heater and was used as my daily driver for a while for gas mileage. It has manual locking hubs - the 4WD works great - I also have a set of steel wheels that could have other tires put on. It has a class 1 hitch although we've never used it - just a 1" receiver. The Hella lamps on the front work really well in fog. It was just inspected in PA two months ago. The windows are lift out plexiglass instead of the plastic for a more durable, daily driver-type setup. There are some small bubbles and surface rust in the paint at the rocker bottom - they aren't soft at all - the car is probably 98% rust free or better. I have a can of custom made touch up spray paint can for areas such as this. Also, the CD player doesn't work - I never cared as I just listen to the radio. Overall, other than those two issues, this is a great, simple, driver that gets 26.5-27 MPG on the highway. It is registered as a Thing so you could get a vintage plate. The shell was actually from Washington state so it was rust-free from the start. Also: tires are decent, brakes good, lights work. I have a BRAND NEW, never taken out of the box, Covercraft Weathershield car cover specifically made for the Thing - was over $400. This will be included. The Thing was being covered with my 4runner cover up until a few months ago. Answer to a common asked question: the body is mounted to the frame just like it would be on a Volkswagen subframe. it uses stock mounting points. the firewall from the tracker was used so that the dash and the heater would all fit like factory. the engine is mounted like factory on the tracker frame and comes up through where the gas tank would be. everything looks like it should be on a stock car. PLEASE DO NOT BID ON THE CAR OR INQUIRE IF YOU ARE NOT SERIOUS OR DO NOT HAVE THE FUNDING. I WAS HOLDING THIS CAR, AFTER MY FIANCE DECIDED TO SELL, FOR SOME TIME FOR A GENTLEMAN THAT NEVER CAME THROUGH AFTER ALL THE CORRESPONDANCES - VERY FRUSTRATING. HAD A QUESTION ON THE VINs: THEY ARE ALL IN FACTORY LOCATIONS!!
