Vehicle Detail
1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk The Golden Hawk is a two-door pillarless hardtop made by the Studebaker Corporation of South Bend, Indiana. These vehicles were designed to compete with the Corvette and Thunderbird. It has a supercharged V-8 engine that produces 275 HP and has room for four passengers. Only 4,356 were built. The 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawks have established themselves as the most valuable postwar Studebaker. For example, last year two '57 Golden Hawks sold at auction, one for $149,000 and the other for $99,000. A few weeks ago, two more 57 Golden Hawks sold for $79,000 and $66,000. Overview of this Car: This very unique 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk came from the factory with a gold exterior with white fins and a gold interior. It has the supercharged 289 cu. in. engine, rare 3 speed with overdrive, and a 4.09 ratio twin traction rear end. The car was owned by the original purchaser's family until last year and has always been garaged with only 44,000 original miles. The previous owner sent it to a shop to begin a restoration several years ago but passed away. I purchased the car from his family with the intention of finishing it but other priorities have arisen. This is the most solid Studebaker that I have seen. The trunk still has its original paint and is amazingly without any surface rust. As shown in the pictures (in the link below), the rest of the car is just as solid, which is unheard of for Studebakers as they were prone to rust. The low mileage engine is all original and complete, has not been rebuilt, and according to the family, ran great prior to removal for the restoration. The interior is stunning red leather and every piece is ready for installation except the back seat and quarter panels as this car was being built as a T-top/convertible. The frame has no rust and was stiffened in places to account for the roof alterations. Nearly every piece of chrome has been re-chromed (by one of the best chrome-platers in the country) and the stainless steel trim polished . NOS and reproduction emblems, door sills, exhaust tips, etc are included. The car is 99% complete, missing only a few things during movement around the restoration shop. The missing parts can be located easily by the new owner. While not finished, much work has already been completed including preparing and priming the body for paint. You can finish it as is or replace the roof section and restore to pure original condition. Either way, this could be a real showstopper when completed. Here is a link to more pictures showing details of the car and the many beautifully restored parts. The Album contains 7 Sub-Albums of the Body and Frame, Chrome, Interior, Engine, Rust Free Body Panels, Dashboard, and Miscellaneous. Please be sure to open each album to see all the items.http://oneoldcar.imgur.com/ From Factory Production Order: The production order, as obtained from the Studebaker Museum, confirms that this is an all matching numbers Golden Hawk. Particulars are shown below. Tiara Gold exterior with Arctic white fins and Gold vinyl interior289 cu in factory Supercharged engine (made by Studebaker)3 Speed manual transmission with overdriveTwin Traction rear end with 4.09 axle ratioClimatizer (heater), backup lights, and radio were added accessories. Serial number 6102050 (located on driver's door post)Model number 57H K7, Body number 1991 (located on the firewall)Engine number PS 3095 (All numbers match) Body: The car is amazingly solid and almost ready for paint. The doors, hood, and trunk lid are all rust free, primed, and like new. The floors are a rock. The front fenders are extremely solid with a small bubble low on each side. There is no rust on the rear fenders either but there is a small dent on the bottom right rear that would be easy to fix. The shop restoring the car cut the top to make it a T-top/convertible. They stiffened the frame to compensate for removing a portion of the roof. Two custom T-tops are included and are shown in the pictures. Much non-obvious work has already been done such as the restoration of the entire internals in the doors to include the window tracks, window mechanisms, door latches, etc. There is even new cat-whiskers and new vent window rubber installed. Chrome: The chrome is re-chromed and absolutely stunning. It was refinished by Paul's chrome plating in Mars, PA who does expensive high dollar cars. The front scoops, fender parking lights, fin caps, door and quarter chrome, and many more items all look amazing and cost a lot of money to have redone. Many emblems are either new old stock or reproductions. The stainless steel trim on the fins, fenders, doors, and roof halo are straightened, highly polished and ready to mount. Even the six front scoop stainless spears are polished to a mirror finish. None of these trim parts are mounted yet. Interior: The interior is stunning red leather and every piece is ready for installation except the back seat and quarter panel pieces which can be found and upholstered to match, if desired. Wrapped in red leather are the door panels, front seat, kick panels, sun visors, seat surrounds, door handles, etc. The color and condition are amazing. The dashboard and gauges appear to have been restored and cleaned as they look like new. The dash was painted and the glove box internals have been restored as well. Engine: I am told that the engine ran fine when removed, as it only has 44,000 original miles on it. It is complete with all the supercharger goodies down to the hard to find air cleaner and special clips holding down the tachometer sending unit on the distributor. The transmission is included and is the rare 3 speed with overdrive. Both the engine and transmission have very minimal grease and grime further supporting the low miles. Summary: This is a rare, desirable, and unusually solid car that has all matching numbers. It would be a really cool car to finish as-is. It would also be fairly straightforward (according to a body shop) to put a roof section on to bring back as original. With all the restored parts, you could even buy this package and use the parts to finish restoring your Golden Hawk and save a bundle of money and time restoring each of these items. The car is located near Frederick, Maryland, not far from the Studebaker York, PA swap meet coming up on 28 February. I have a clear title in hand and the new buyer is responsible for pickup or shipping. Thank you and good luck with your bidding. On Feb-02-13 at 18:51:40 PST, seller added the following information: A few more things: Please click on the link that contains many more pictures located at the end of the "Overview of this Car" section. Tons of pictures of the incredible chrome, interior, body, and engine are there. I wanted to mention that I know these things are not with the car: bumpers, windshield, stainless wheel opening mouldings, and rear seat springs. All of these items can be located without much effort. Lastly, I wanted to point out that there is a neat air system added to below the inside of the rear quarter windows. This allows the quarter windows and roof corners to rotate or retract into the body to form a convertible look. Pretty ingenious. Please see the linked pictures for details. Thanks
