Vehicle Detail
This is a very special BMW. Not only is it a California Spec R100S Last Edition, yes, BMW made R100S LE's not just R100CS LE's, but it was also sold through San Jose BMW and treated to all the period goodies that were spec'ed out for the day. I have the original Bill of Sale from San Jose. It was sold on June 15, 1984 and the original price was 5700.00 out the door. It was sold to a Mr. Steve Boice of Morgan Hill, CA. I know that some of the BMW experts out there will say that this is not the correct pearl white color and that it can't be an LE because it is not a CS, however, if you take a look at the BMW Last Edition ad that I have photographed in this listing you will see the following at the bottom of the ad: 'Last Edition models are limited to the following quantites: R100, 75, R100S and CS, 175, R100RS, 250, R100RT, 240. Models for California will vary slighting in color scheme and model designation.' That last phrase is important...this is a California R100S LE. I purchased a real copy of the Ad after I got the bike and will include a good photo copy of the ad with the sale of the bike. Unfortunately I do not have the original Last Edition Certificate that one of the previous owners must have kept. This bike is one of the earliest LE models, being produced in December of 1983. This bike is straight white with black pin striping. The thing that I love most about her is that it still has the go fast goodies that San Jose installed on her when she was new. This is what they did:Dual PluggedCC Products Lateral Frame brace CC Products Fork BraceCC Products Upper Triple ClampSan Jose Logo tinted windscreenSan Jose BMW also did the the unleaded valve conversion with high flow valves back in 1994. (I have receipt) They also installed the Dynatech electronic ignition at that time. If you look at the cockpit pics you will see the normal R100S guages along with the voltage guage, the clock, working, and also a BMW Oil Temp guage that was also installed. The bike has the dual seat and the 3/4 seat as well. I added the early model valve covers but I also have the stock covers in very good shape, I just like the look of the older style. I replaced the gaskets when I did the switch. BMW oil cooler as seen in the pic as well as bar end mirrors...I do have the stock mirrors as well. I just replaced the fuel lines with the correct fabric covered lines and did an oil change and a valve adjustment. Bike is ready to go. It has BMW system cased with keys as seen in pics. It also has its original tool kit and the tire pump is still under the seat. I have receipts beginning in 1992 and bringing the bike right to the present. I have the original San Jose Folder including the salesman's card, Mr. William Perry, Sales Manager. The bike carries its original CA blue license plate and all registration is current. Not sure what else there is to say about the bike it runs beautifully and I would ride it anywhere without hesitation. There are two things I will do to the bike if she doesn't sell on the auction. 1. I will replace the tank badges and the tail badge...they are yellowed. 2. I would refresh the pushrod tube seals, they are beginning to seep a little oil...a couple of drops per week but it is bothersome. Bike also comes with a brown side stand which is not currently installed. Both seats are in excellent condition, no rips or tears at all. I have just noticed that my photo guy didn't take any under seat pics so I will add those later today. Let me know if you want to see any other angles, etc, in additional pictures. Let me know if you have any questions and I will be happy to give you immediate attention. I will be happy to meet your shipper to send the bike off to you, or if you are local, happy to show the bike to you in person. Best of Luck! On Jan-09-13 at 14:39:11 PST, seller added the following information: I want to be sure that I am being clear about the Last Edition title of the bike. Included in the paperwork of the bike is an email exchange from 2009 between several of the BMW MOA presidents. I consider these men experts. I am going to copy the email here word for word so that I can represent this bike as I believe it is, an early Limited Edition R100S. "This is mainly directed at Jeff Roessler, but I thought more people may be interested also. Jeff contacted me with a question about the Last Edition BMW's offered in 1984, specifically the R100CS. He is in the process of buying one and wanted to knoww if there was such a model as the R100S Last Edition. Well, I said, to the best of my knowledge, that all fo the 84 S bikes were sold as R100CS's, only the second time that BMW had used that moniker (The first time was 1981. These bikes had *real* r100cs serial numb ers where the 84's had r100 serial numbers) Jeff pointed me to the September 1996 MOA, and said there was a Staintune ad that showed a R100S Last Edition! I ASSUMED that someone had just massaged a LE R100 and added an S to the sidecover. Well, I dug that issue out last night, and sure enough there it was! So now the plot thickens. It was time to go to the archieves! I only have one Last Edition Brochure, but the answer was there, right on the back! There was a little asterick next to the R100CS and R100S!! R100S? What are you talking about Willis??? The asterick pointed me to this little gem: 'R100CS is designated as R100S in California. Models for California will vary slightly in color!' Well as Johnny Carson used to say, "I did not know that!" Seeing that I am from the East Coast, the chance of me seeing a CA R100S LE is pretty slim. Why BMW chose to do this remains a mystery. Cheers, Factory Phil, AKA Phil Rose." That is the end of the email. I feel pretty confident that no one has fiddled with this bike, it fits all the criteria and so there you go. The brochure Phil referred to is pictured in this auction. I purchased one just so that I had the documentation myself. Hope that helps to answer any questions as to the validity of the bike. JoeOn Jan-14-13 at 14:26:57 PST, seller added the following information: I just received this very helpful information from another eBayer...I add it here as further corroboration as to the validity of the bike. "Joe, you may find the additional information helpful with respect to the production date of your R100 and its registration as a 1983 model-year vehicle. All Last Edition models originally sold and registered in California were manufactured in late 1983 and registered as 1983 vehicles. This was done in order to avoid changing California equipment requirements which were effective for vehicles manufactured after December 31, 1983. The LE BMWs were marketed as 1984 models, but registered as 1983s. That is why the San Jose paperwork reads as it does. LE BMWs from the other 49 states, of course, were registered as 1984 models. I have personal knowledge of this as I bought my new R100RT in California in April 1984. It was manufactured in November 1983, and registered as a 1983 vehicle. My bike was not an LE, but a number of LEs were in the dealership showroom at the time. I was told by the sales person they were all produced in late 1983 and would be registered as 1983 motorcycles." Thanks so much! Makes absolutely perfect sense to me.
