Vehicle Detail
This is a rare 2005 Volkswagen Passat GLS TDI Wagon. It is in overall good condition. It is composed of a 2.0 liter turbo diesel four cylinder engine, VW code BHW, mated to a five speed automatic ZF (Germany) brand transmission, VW code GMR. The car has 161,323 miles on the odometer. Since taking ownership of the car at 108,000 miles, most of the miles have been highway miles as the greater part of my commute is on a highway. According to the car's computer, at 80 MPH, the car will get between 30 and 34 MPG. At 55 MPH, the MPG is in the high 40s. The Passat is not deterred by hauling heavy loads. Due to the great torque band, the car feels much the same when driving with a full car. Aside from the features that are listed above, I fitted the car with Bilstein Heavy Duty Sportwagen shocks and struts. They are nearly as high end as one can buy before going into custom coil-over shocks or magnetic technology that can cost many thousands of dollars. The Bilstein Heavy Duties give the car superb handling that is not abrasive and a stock ride height for practicality. Bilstein Heavy Duty and Sport shocks and struts are equipped on many of the top luxury and performance vehicles of the world and should last longer than one's car. The car has four all-season high performance touring Michelin MXM4 225/45/R17 91W tires on optional VW 17 inch wheels. The tires are in excellent condition and perform very well. I have the same tires on my other two cars. There is just over 4/32 of an inch tread depth remaining on all four tires so they have a long life ahead of them. The car also comes equipped with a factory spare located underneath the luggage compartment. All tire changing equipment is also present. Formula One Tinting in Raleigh, NC tinted all the windows to approximately 34% with Formula One Comfort Series high heat rejection, premium tint. They also tinted the windshield with a 50-state legal Llumar Blue-Air 80 windshield tint to reduce heat and glare. All tint is in excellent condition. Since the tint job, the car has passed NC state inspection several times. It keeps the car cooler in the summer months by rejecting heat and keeps the car warmer in the winter months by retaining heat from the climate control system. By the way, the car seats are a high quality perforated gray vinyl, not leather. Volkswagen calls them Leatherette. They are comfortable and in good condition. I am selling the car with several Mann oil filters, air induction filters, cabin filters, and approximately two gallons of Shell Rotella T6 full synthetic euro car spec 5W40 motor oil. The aforementioned oil is probably the best oil one can use in this engine. The windshield wipers are Bosch Icons in excellent condition. The car includes two electronic key fobs, one service key, one owner's manual, front driver's side floor mat, both rear floor mats, and a retractable Volkswagen cargo cover. The car is and from what I can tell has always been smoke-free. A history of the car follows: I am the third owner of this Passat. From my research I found that the original owner of the car was a woman in Wilmington, NC that had the car until approximately 80 or 90 thousand miles. At that time a Volkswagen Credit type group took possession of the car and was the owner until approximately 108,000 miles when I purchased it in 2009. That year I was deployed and on the way back home I spent yet more time in Germany and really admired the diesel cars that are abundant in that country. I wanted one but I didn't have an excuse to get one until I was rear ended by a 2nd Lieutenant on my way to work :(. Anyway I jumped on the opportunity to purchase a great car such as this. I found it at a used car dealership in New Jersey. Through Car Fax I learned the history of the car. The Volkswagen Credit group that I mentioned earlier leased the car through a local dealer in the vicinity of Chicago, IL to a woman that owned a pet grooming business, hence the dog scratch marks in parts of the interior. For some unknown reason the woman was done with the car and it was sold via auction to the New Jersey dealership. I quickly noticed that the car was neglected by the previous owner and I spent much time, effort, and money bringing the car back to good condition. I will greatly miss this car. It is so much fun drive; especially going through twisty roads. It has been my daily driver and a reliable car to venture far from home with wince 2009. I have taken it as far west as Fort Stockton, TX and it has never developed a problem on my travels. I had the timing belt replaced at 109,000 miles. It should not need to be replaced for at least another 20,000 miles. Prior to owning this car, I had not owned a european car and was hesitant to work on the car. I have since learned so much about european cars and have purchased two others since. If you are at all concerned about the maintenance aspect of a european car, I can assure you it is not something difficult to manage. The car was well designed to be easily serviced. Unless I am away for work related reasons, I do all of the regular maintenance myself. You can even use a certain type of pump to extract the engine oil directly out of the oil dipstick tube, rather than having to go under the car to remove the oil plug. It takes much of the pain out of an oil change. Both the oil and fuel filters are located on top of the engine so there really is no reason to go under the car. Likewise, the air induction and cabin filters are easy to reach. I have primarily used Mann filters and Rotella T6 5W40 full synthetic motor oil. There is an abundance of parts for these B5 Passats in salvage, ebay, and aftermarket sales. You should not have to pay much for parts if and when you do need them; and you will save lots of money by getting the filters and performing simple maintenance yourself. I have received compliments on the car from so many people. It really does look sharp. I think many are aware of the practicality of a diesel car and are realizing those benefits themselves. The engine runs great. The battery failed at approximately 140,000 miles and I replaced it with a Volkswagen battery. So far as I can tell, I have every receipt for every service performed on this car and I will provide them to you for you to keep. I logged my own maintenance as well. I have garaged the car the majority of time I have owned it. I have provided many photographs of the car. Please tell me if you wish to see more and if there is a specific part of the car you would like for me to show you. I will do my best to provide you with accurate information. If you are interested in learning about Passat TDIs in general, visit the Passat World forums, TDI Club Forums, or the My Turbo Diesel Forum. The negatives are: (1) The manual sport shift mode of the DSG automatic transmission stopped working at approximately 140,000 miles. I have never bothered to repair it because I never use the feature and I found it is especially unnecessary with a diesel car. A VW mechanic told me that one of the transmission magnets probably fell off of the transmission, rendering the sport shift inoperable. It should be an inexpensive fix if you were to pursue that option. (2) An approximate 1 X 6 inches of the paint was scraped off of the rear of the passenger side rear fender. The fender is plastic so there is no possibility of it rusting. The paint was scraped off to the primer coat so it is white in color. (3) An approximate 2 X 3 inch black plastic side skirt fascia molding under the front passenger's door is missing. It has no practical application from what I can ascertain and so I have not bothered to replace it. (4) There are mild scratches in the interior of the car due to a previous owner's dog or dogs. (5) A few of the plastic bolt / screw covers are missing from the engine cover components in the engine compartment. (6) The rear console ash tray spring is broken. I never used it and simply tucked it in so that it will not pop out and is nearly flush with the rest of the console. (7) If you were to look very carefully at the front of the vehicle you will notice that the hood and front driver's and passenger's side fender panels are a slightly different hue than the rest of the car. This indicates that the car was in some sort of a collision in the past and the ; however, I did not notice it when I purchased the car and the Car Fax audit returned as clean ie: no collision / auto accident on record. I am to assume that a previous owner collided with another vehicle at low speed in a parking lot and did not report the incident. (8) There is an approximate two millimeter fray on one side of the rear center passenger seat belt. This is likely from a previous owner's dog. (9) The door unlock button of one of the two electronic key fobs I am including has failed as of November this year. I also noticed that the red light that tends to come on upon depression of the buttons is not illuminating. It may just need a new battery. (10) The manual driver's side front seat up/down pump action lever works for only approximately one half inch of adjustment up and down. All other adjustment features work. (11) The AM radio setting does not work. FM and all other radio functions work great. (12) Some of the rear window defrost lines were scratched in some places by the previous owner's dog, rendering much of the rear defrost ability nonoperational.
