Vehicle Detail
This is my damaged 1963 Austin Healey 3000. Much of the mechanical work is complete and the brakes are fresh as well as the hubs and wheels. The hubs are new from Denis Welch and the 60 spoke chrome wheels and tires are new from Hendrix Wire Wheel. Damage: The car has some miner damage to the front driver's side corner. The fender can be replaced for about $1,200 and then another $1,500 in labor I've been quoted. The car needs to be repainted and is a good candidate for a restoration due to the condition of the car. Electrical: I replaced the entire harness in 2005 and had the generator rebuilt. I also put in a Mallory distributor at that time and it solved the problems we had with the Lucas unit. Mechanical: The brakes, hubs (by Denis Welch in England), and bearings (Timken- in Akron, Ohio) are all new. New wire spoke wheels and tires from hendrixwirewheel.com were added. Allen Hendrix also balanced the rear drums. The motor pulls nicely and the overdrive shifts when the switch is flipped. 1st is notchy so I always start out in 2nd gear which works since the big Healey has a lot of torque (Please see video). Body: The car is a project and needs restored. I had an accident this Summer and damaged the front driver's side corner. The parts are available and the aluminum shroud can be hammered back into place or can be renewed from Moss Motors (Please don't even consider the Chinese junk from other suppliers). I did get under the car and sanded all of the old paint and surface rust and put on a rust-resistant paint that has helped preserve the car with my daily driving. I keep the shocks filled (but not overfilled) with Armstrong oil. The top is a Stayfast top from Moss Motors and is in pretty good shape but needs to be cleaned. When replacing the top in 2005 I had the frame blasted and repainted in the proper Healey silver paint. The motor is great and I had the original radiator re-cored and then put electric fans on the front to ensure the car wouldn't overheat on my commute. The motor is the least of my concerns for this car, the body needs more attention. This is NOT a concourse car, but it is fun to drive and I've driven from Nashville to Louisville, to Birmingham, and Chattanooga multiple times without a problem. But I have a Lotus Elan +2 in the queue and need to have the Healey go to another guy who can spend more time getting it back to perfection. On Dec-09-12 at 21:56:54 PST, seller added the following information: The auction may end end early due to the car being presented to local car clubs in the mid-South. Thanks for looking. On Dec-11-12 at 13:04:42 PST, seller added the following information: Added some pictures from the underside. The rust under the rear battery tray is worse than I thought. I'm now using an Optima battery but the damage has been done. Also the fuel tank sending unit needs replaced.
