CLASSIC CARS LTD. ___________________________________________ FORD MODEL A - HISTORY It was only in the face of plummeting sales by the mid 1920's, the result of a buying public that sought the modern upgrades offered by Ford's competitors, that Ford finally relented. In an unusual business move, Ford halted production of the Model T in May of 1927, shutting down the entire production operation for 6 months to allow for retooling and final development of the new Model A Ford. Working under an impossible deadline, Ford managed to get the design and production requirements in place for the release of the "New Ford Car" by November of 1927. Henry's son, Edsel Ford, had unsuccessfully tried to convince his father to abandon the Model T years earlier. Unbeknownst to his father, Edsel had been secretly working on the development of a new car and would ultimately play a significant role in the design of what would become the Ford Model A. Unlike its predecessor, the Model T, which was the result of an evolving process of design, the Model A was designed, complete, from the ground up. The Model A was truly a "New Ford Car." Mechanical upgrades for the Model A Ford included a new 3-speed transmission, hydraulic shock absorbers, and four-wheel mechanical brakes. Other significant improvements were an electric starter, water pump, speedometer and gas gauge, and the introduction of Triplex safety glass. The styling of the Ford Model A, elegant and integrated compared to the Model T, brought Ford into the modern era with a vehicle that looked more like a car and less like a horseless carriage. Henry Ford created a sense of hype and mystery surrounding the release of the Model A Ford, relying on the media to reach the buying public and generate interest in the "New Ford Car." Shortly after the Ford Model A was made available to the public on December 2, 1927, orders for the new car far exceeded supply. Ford scrambled to increase production and by mid 1928, producing up to 4,000 cars per day, was still not meeting the buying public's demand. In an effort to meet demand, Ford steadily boosted production, peaking at around 9,200 cars per day by June of 1930. During its four-year production run, the Model A Ford would be offered in a wide variety of car and truck body styles. For 1928, Ford offered several different style passenger car bodies: Standard Phaeton, Standard Roadster, Standard Coupe, Special Coupe, Sport Coupe, Business Coupe, Tudor Sedan, Town Car, and Leatherback Fordor Sedan. Truck bodies included: Open Cab Pickup, Closed Cab Pickup, Pickup (box), "A" Panel Delivery, "AA" Panel Delivery, and Deluxe Delivery. In 1929, Ford expanded the options for passenger car body styles by adding the Cabriolet, Station Wagon, both Murray and Briggs versions of the Town Sedan, as well as Murray and Briggs versions of the Standard Fordor. The Standard Fordor (2 window) was also introduced. THIS PARTIUCLAR 1929 FORD MODEL A ROADSTER This fantastic classic '29 "Boat Tail Roadster Special" comes to us from a long time friend of Classic Cars Ltd. Over the years we have represented a number of his cars and have become personal friends as a result of our handling the sale of a wide range of vehicles from his collection. This particular car has a history of being in California for decades and, while we do not have documentation, it appears as if the car may have been an original car dating back to the late 1920's. At some point, probably in the 1960's / 1970's the Ford received a number of cosmetic enhancements. Specifically, the doors were removed and a custom "Bullet" rear end was designed and fabricated out of steel. The car has a hand painted pin stripe that is characteristic of another decade. Reportedly, the hood of a 40's vintage vehicle was used for the basis of the rear end and it is apparent that someone spent an incredible number of hours on the project. Some of our customers have commented that the car has the appearance of the Ford Model A race car conversions that were completed in the day. One thing is clear, if you want something truly unique, this car may be for you. It would make a wonderful parade or special event car during the time that we have had the car has always started and proven to be reliable. CONDITON The car retains what appears to be totally stock and largely original mechanical components. Of course, the cleanliness of the top and underside of the car indicates a complete restoration some years ago. The underside, inner engine area and other parts of the car show no signs of significant rust / rust through and the Ford has the appearance of being in California for many many years if not its entire life. It carries a Historical license plate and has just been registered in California use after being used minimally (and non-registered) for several years. The Ford Roadster will come with a clear California title and current, recently renewed registration (for California buyers). COSMETIC CONDITION - EXTERIOR & INTERIOR As an older restoration the car has a lovely patina that adds to the charm and appeal of this particular car. The paint is a striking shade of red and the tan/brown interior nicely offsets the exterior color. Factory wire wheels are finished in red and the older white walls look absolutely great on the Ford. While the paint is high gloss and the exterior trim is in overall good condition (certainly for the age of the car!) there are signs of cracking on the upper surfaces where body work was performed to convert the car to a Roadster. While these imperfections do not detract from the uniqueness and rarity of the car they do exist. The interior is sparse and the front seat is fitted with seat belts for passenger and driver. The steering wheel is original and has a functional horn. The headlights and rear lights work and the car starts using the floor operated push button starter and functional choke. The seat has just been professionally recovered in a period style material and looks fantastic! The trim around the back "cockpit" area was also "re-trimmed" and a fresh rubber mat was added to the car to fresen it up. It looks great! The windshield is free from cracks. The battery has just been replaced and is located under the solid battery holder / floor. MECHANICAL CONDITION The Ford always starts with the aid of the choke and the functional adjustable timing on the left side of the steering wheel. There is the usual gas pedal and also a manually operated hand throttle to the right of the steering wheel. The car runs and drives and shifts very well. There are no unusual noises in the drive-line and those familiar with older antique cars will find the experience of driving this one very straightforward. For those new to these cars, it will only take a few minutes to master driving this simple machine. The clutch & transmission are easy to operate and there is no chatter in the clutch or problem with shifting the car or its overall drivability. Since this car was sitting for some time, we recommend that it be gone through before it is used on a regular basis. The Ford Roadster has the characteristic minor fluid leaks that is (was!) so prevalent with this vintage of car. The tires while showing decent tread are older and replacements may be in order. The braking system is good and, as original, retains the mechanical braking components. The Model "A" has just received the benefit of a new water pump, oil service and anti-freeze change. We have enjoyed a number of late 1920's / early 1930's vehicles and they do require more "fiddling" than more contemporary cars. however, for a true unique Antique car this "Bullet Roadster" represents the opportunity to get into the collector car market at a very reasonable price point. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: - How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive EBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a surety bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Do they enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Are they able to assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
