Cheers and Happy "eBaying"! Paul R. Wankle, Pres. Classic Cars Ltd. Pleasanton, CA 925-846-1451 FORD MUSTANG HISTORY / SUMMARY The late 1960s was one of the most turbulent periods in modern history. A world away, the Vietnam War was sending shockwaves to our shores, causing abundant social unrest and change. Who can forget 1967? Two civil rights pioneers, Dr. Martin Luther King and Senator Robert F. Kennedy, were gunned down in cold blood within a few months of one another on the road to human equality. Vietnam and the civil rights movement are the two events people remember most about the late 1960s. Car enthusiasts, however, remember the period for different reasons. We remember "The War"- the one that was staged at traffic lights and drag strips from coast to coast. Call it a civil war of sorts. Chevy versus Ford versus Chrysler across the land. In the Chevy camp - Camaro, Chevelle, and Corvette. At Chrysler - Plymouth 'Cuda, Roadrunner, GTX - and Dodge Dart, Challenger, and Charger. There were competing name plates out there with Mustang-like qualities. They became known as "Pony Cars." While some gravitated to other "brands" like Camaro's, Dodge's, Plymouths and even American Motors high performance cars, the Mustangs had a strong following that continued through the 1960's and into the mid-70's when smog requirements and safety standards had a negative impact on muscle cars for decades to come. While the Mustang no longer owned the sporty car market it reigned as one of the most popular cars in the category of sport and high performance cars. Second Generation Mustang (1967 - 1967) The 1967 model year Mustang was the first model to feature a major redesign since the introduction 1964 ½ - 1966 Mustang. The overall size, interior and cargo space were increased. Exterior trim changes included concave taillights, side scoop (1967) and chrome (1967) side ornamentation, square rear-view mirrors, and usual yearly wheel and gas cap changes. The high-performance 289 option was offered along with other high horsepower versions. The 1967 and 1967 models discontinued the "Pony Interior" in favor of a new deluxe interior package that included color options, brushed stainless steel (1967) or wood grain (1967) trim, seat buttons, a tilt steering wheel, and interior paneling. In terms of production numbers the Mustang was very popular with close to 500,000 total vehicles being produced for the 1967 model year. However, the Mustang convertible production represented fewer than 10% of the cars produced making it one of the more desirable of the body styles. THIS PARTICULAR 1967 FORD MUSTANG CONVERTIBLE We are pleased to have the opportunity to represent this unique Mustang on behalf of one of our local customers, who has owned the Mustang since February, 1972. Those of you that follow Classic Cars Ltd.'s auctions are aware that the large majority of our vehicles come to us from referrals and repeat customers and, we're proud to say, that we have developed a reputation for dealing with very nice, original, well documented cars. This is one of those cars from a Northern California private party that comes to us as a result of a previous customer's referral and positive experience with our organization. We recognize that there are a number of Mustangs available in the market today. However, as the old saying goes "You can restore a car over and over again, but it is only original once." Never before have truer words been spoken when it comes to this car. This Mustang remains in very stock condition and with the exception of some cosmetic upgrades (paint, new top, etc.) detailing and the replacement of "wear" items (brakes, tires, tune-up and suspension components, etc) is a really original, correct, unmolested "Survivor." The long time owners of the Mustang purchased the convertible in 1972 from a local new car dealer. At the time, they were told that the Mustang's first owner was a woman in Marin, CA traded the car in on a newer model. Please keep in mind that at that time, the Mustang would have been less than 5 years old and current owner of the Mustang, our client, has owned the car for over 40 years. While she is still very active and uses the Mustang occasionally, since the passing of her husband several years ago the car has seen less use and despite her struggle with selling the Mustang she has decided that it makes sense to provide a new "caregiver" with the opportunity to own a classic Mustang. The Mustang convertible has always resided in the in the San Francisco Bay area for that entire time. Mrs. H. provided us with a good history of the car indicating that, during their ownership, the car received very good care and maintenance. This was supported by a thick file of receipts that date back to the late 1970'son both major and minor repairs that have been performed on the car. According to the owner of the car and her son-in-law, the Mustang was used very sparingly as a local car and serviced regularly. The comprehensive documentation certainly supports this fact and also provides chronological support of the Mustang's low mileage considering its age. While we cannot guarantee the accuracy of the mileage on any 45~ year old car, every indication (including the report from the owner) suggests that the mileage on the car is correct at 141,635. As an example, the file receipts indicate that the car was driven fewer than 15,000 miles! We are very big on having documentation and history on our cars. We believe the long term value in enhanced in addition to eliminating some of the surprises that can occur when a car is offered for sale with no history of ownership, repairs or maintenance. The "Numbers" on the Mustang break down as follows: VIN NUMBER - 7 R 03 T 109353 - 1St Digit = 7 (1967 Model Year) - 2nd Digit = R (Produced in San Jose) - 3rd & 4th Digits = 2 Door Convertible (03) - 5th Digit = T (200 CID Engine) VEHICLE DATA (TRIM TAG) - 76A Q 2B 23J 72 2 W - 76A = Body Type - (Convertible) - Q = Color (Brittany Blue) - 2B = Trim - (Blue Bucket Seats) - 23J = Production Date (23rd Day 1966) - DSO = (District Office / Production Location) - San Jose - Tans = 2 = 2.83:1 W = C4 Automatic - 65A = 2 Door Interior, Standard Interior - Note: Original door tag is in place, not reproduced item. EVIDENCE OF THE CARS LOW MILEAGE / LIMITED USE Specifically, we ask that you examine the photographs very carefully to look at the lack of wear and originality of the following items: - Entire car painted about 5 years ago (in the factory original color) at a cost of over $10,000.00 (receipt in file) - Complete convertible top & frame replaced 5 years ago (new white power top) - Dashboard - In very nice condition and devoid of sun damage, cracks and significant flaws / imperfections. Beautiful and every indication is that it is original and has always been garaged. - The gauge needles, gauge trim, vertical portions of the dash and glove box and steering wheel / column are all original and show only age appropriate signs of wear and tear but no significant damage - The carpet is very nice and appears to be original and has obvious wear through or damage - The lovely white convertible top is in excellent condition and was replaced approximately 3 years ago. - The Mustang is fitted with factory seat belts front and rear - The door panels, upper door areas (painted) are free from major scratches are in very nice original condition - The gauges are clear and fully functional - The glove box is intact with no damage or missing inner cardboard glove compartment - The seats appear to be totally original and have virtually no wear, rips, tears or damage, even to the typically worn outer bolsters - The back seat appears to have never been used (and probably wasn't!) - The rear deck is glass and in excellent condition The exterior also has signs of being low mileage and often times it is the small things that tell the story when it comes to a car that has been used minimally. Consider the following: - Excellent door gaps, no sagging and overall good panel fit for this vintage Mustang - Stainless windshield trim is original (front & rear window) - Note: no signs of leaking or replacement with inexpensive aftermarket parts - Side window glass / trim is all original - Front windshield is free from any noticeable stars, chips of significant flaws - Exterior chrome and other trim is nice "California condition" - Original Ford factory hubcaps - No alterations to the factory equipment (wheels, fenders, spoilers, suspension). The car remains totally stock and as delivered from the dealer in 1966. The list goes on and on and we certainly have omitted a number of important items that make us believe this car is low mileage and VERY original. CONDITION SUMMARY We can't count the number of times that customers ask us to locate "Honest" California "Survivors." This car represents the epitome of a legitimate documented, long term owner (45~ years!) 1967 Mustang convertible. This Mustang is a car that owners will enjoy displaying at the local car show, drive as an occasional car (or even a reliable regular use car!) and enjoy without investing a fortune on a frame off restored 6-figure collectible. In addition to its documented and interesting history, the car remains in lovely condition and many believe the car has received the benefit of a comprehensive restoration. The exterior, interior and trunk show very well and the engine bay, despite not being fanatically detailed, is clean, original and reflects the care that the car has received. The exterior is, as the photographs reflect, very straight and the body is free from rust and damage. The car was re-painted in its original color about 5 years ago (at a cost of over $10,000 including a totally new power top structure and convertible top) and has held up very well. The paint is flat, smooth and free from orange peel, cracks, and other significant imperfections. It still is high gloss and no partial re-painting has been done since the entire car was re-painted. Since the paint was completed, the car has been garaged for all but a few thousand miles. Of course, this is not a restored example so minor imperfections do exist but they require close inspection to be identified and in no way detract from the overall appearance and beauty of this '67 Mustang convertible. The exterior trim including the rubber, stainless, chrome bumpers and lenses are all excellent showing minimal exposure to the elements, another reason that the relatively low mileage claim could be argued. Tires are in very good condition and the recent safety inspection confirmed fully functional lighting systems, brakes, and other required California safety items. The top show like new and the contrast between the beautiful blue body and the white top is fantastic. The interior is in really remarkable condition and has every appearance of being original although it is hard to believe that the car has survived 45~ years in this condition. To our way of thinking, the interior is the best reason to believe that the Mustang may, in fact, have the very low mileage of 41,650 as claimed. An inspection of virtually every part of the interior shows minimal signs of wear and a completely stock, unmolested Mustang convertible. There have never been any changes and all of the cars documented factory options remain in place. The dash is very nice as are the seats, instruments, gauges, steering wheel, door panels.the list goes on and on. We encourage a close look at the photos (there are a few shadows in some of the photos) but we believe that in this case that the old adage "A photo is worth a thousand words" certainly applies. The factory original Ford radio is I place but has not worked for years (not a priority to its owner). Also, the antenna will need to be replaced if a radio is installed. The trunk is very clean and contains the factory spare and tools. The trunk mat is original and shows some signs of discoloration but should the new owner wish to replace this with a fresh item they are available for a few dollars. Most important is the fact that the trunk is all original and free from rust as is the exterior of the body MECHANICAL CONDITION Mechanically, the car runs as good as it looks. It starts immediately under all conditions and runs cool in very warm California temperatures. The car has excellent power, does not leak fluids and there are no knocks or unusual noise in the engine. The car does not smoke, shifts smoothly and the passing gear is adjusted and working properly. It is a strong, great running car. The Mustang received the benefit of a totally rebuilt engine and transmission within the past 15,000 miles. Additional details later are provided later in this narrative. The brakes are excellent and the emergency brake is functional. The Mustang steers straight, stops straight and does not pull or wander as a result of the newer tires and proper alignment. The exhaust system is in excellent condition. Needless to say, it is difficult to summarize the repair / maintenance history on a car that has received regular care for over 40 years. The file that we have (provided to the cars new owner, of course) is thick with receipts for large and small repairs. Additionally, the file documents the cars mileage through a chronological progression for many years. WITHIN THE PREVIOUS 1,000~ MILES - Required California safety inspection (Completed on - Major tune-up and complete carburetor rebuild - Complete oil service - New tires - mount / balance - New rear brakes, e-cable, axle seals, shoes, etc. - New front brake wheel cylinders - Complete paint and replacement of convertible top and frame ($10,364.00+ (receipt in file) Note: Recommendations to change ball joints, do wheel alignment and replace idler arm have not been completed. WITHIN 5,000~ MILES - Major tune-up including spark plugs, wires and all tune / filters - Transmission service - Replace power stern hose / fluid - WITHIN 7,500~ MILES - New water pump, thermostat, gaskets & check entire cooling system - Replace alternator - New tires - Complete oil service 10K - 20K MILES AGO - Complete oil service - New radiator fan - Brake inspection / repairs - Replacement battery (s) - Smog (always passed) - Radiator repairs & hoses - Oil analysis performed (all "Normal") - Major service - Front suspension work including: new shocks, brakes, wheels studs, front end alignment, wheel and slave cylinders, idler arm, tie rod ends, ball joints, link pins & much more - Tires - Oil service (s) MAJOR MECHANICAL REPAIRS - At 30,675 miles (11,000 miles ago) the Mustang received a complete transmission overhaul - A7 26, 27,280 miles (14,355 miles ago) the Mustang received a complete top & bottom engine rebuild. The details are documented and included virtually every part of the engine, carburetor, valves, rods & crank and too much to list. We will be glad to share written details with interested buyers. Again, please keep in mind that the above represents a quick summary of a file containing invoices for a period of over 20 years (actual receipts prior to that time were not retained but the owner reports the same high level of care). Frankly we could go on and on about this 1967 Mustang convertible but we ask that you call if we can answer any specific questions about the car. It is a very unusual example that would be a wonderful addition to any Mustang enthusiast or aficionado. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ) 1. Has it received a safety / light inspection? Yes, we have the required California safety inspection in file and there the rear wheel cylinders were found to have minor seepage. They were changed and system was checked and bled. The Mustang's tires, brakes and lighting systems comply with CA requirements. 2. What is the total mileage on the Mustang? The mileage currently reads approximately 41,000 miles (41,650 at this writing) and we have been told that it is original by its owner of over 40 years. However, since we are unable to accurately document the cars miles since new, while it appears that the mileage may be this low, we must represent the car as TMU (Total Miles Unknown) in order to be totally accurate. 3. Was the work completed by professionals? Yes, all of the maintenance has been professionally done. There is absolutely no evidence of "shade tree" mechanics having their hands on this Mustang. 4. Is the work documented by receipts? Yes, most of the work over the course of many years (20+0 is documented including major work like a total engine & transmission rebuild, along with frequent servicing / maintenance. 5. Does the car have seat belts? Yes, factory installed both front & rear. 6. Can we have the vehicle inspected? Absolutely, we encourage inspections of this Mustang by serious, qualified individuals, or professional inspection companies. All we ask is that you call us at 925-846-1451 to arrange a convenient time since we are in and out of our offices quite a bit. We are unable to allow inspections 24 hours prior to the end of the auction as we are closed on Sunday. 7. Can you provide some "ballpark" costs of shipping costs around the United States? Yes, on a fully insured, ENCLOSED carrier (we do not recommend the more common "open" transporters for a car of this caliber) and delivered to your door, about $1600.00 for most of the East Coast, $1350.00 to some of the Southern States, and around $1000 to points in the Midwest. The cost to Los Angeles would be in the area of $500.00. PLEASE check with us as these are just estimates, NOT firm shipping costs, and rates are changing regularly due to fuel costs, exact locations, and other factors. PURCHASING A COLLECTOR VEHICLE - THINGS TO CONSIDER As always, we recommend that you carefully review the seller's background of any collector car being sold over the Internet. We believe that it is important to ask yourself a number of questions including, but not limited to: How long have they been in business? - How much experience do they have with collector cars? - How many positive collector car vehicle sales have completed (positive eBay feedback)? - How detailed/complete is the description of the vehicle? - Do the photos show details of the interior, exterior, top, chrome, etc. or are they simply "Glamour Shots" taken from a distance? - Does the seller have a Surety Bond to protect the financial transaction? - What about insurance, licensing by the state, and a local business license? - Does the seller (if a business) have any DMV (Motor Vehicle) complaints and/or other history of legal action, grievances? - Does the seller enjoy a favorable local and national/international reputation? - Can the seller assist with funding sources, transport and out of state/country sales?
