Vehicle Detail

1988 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z 2dr hatchback. 2.2 liter turbocharged and intercooled inline 4 cylinder, 5 speed manual transmission. Power windows, locks, mirrors, seats, ac, cruise, tilt, sunroof, cd player, rear defog, aluminum wheels, and 4 wheel disc brakes. I bought this car with the intention of using it as a daily driver and fixing it up in the process. It has served me well for more than 6 months. It has averaged around 34mpg for me doing mostly highway driving. It starts right up and runs well to be almost 25 years old. It is also very quick even by today's standards. I have since bought a new car and don't have the time to mess with this one anymore. It has been sitting for a few months now and only gets used occasionally to go to the store. Since I have had it, I have replaced the windshield and had all the windows including the windshield tinted. The side and back windows are tinted 20%, and the windshield is 70%. It is a very clean professional job and looks great. The 70% on the windshield really cuts down the glare. I have also replaced the spark plugs and changed the fluids. The body is solid with no rust and no major damage. It does have some dings and small dents that would be expected of a car this age. The paint is a older cheap paint job that looks decent from 10 feet. The interior is complete, the dash and door panels, and upholstery is in decent shape. It does have some cigarette burns but no tears. The carpet is nasty and should be replaced. The headliner must have been sagging, because somebody has removed it. The foam is still there. I would say overall, the interior could use some tlc but is not a lost cause. As far as the running gear, the engine starts right up and runs well. The transmission shifts good, no grinding or whining. The clutch pulls good, no slipping. The engine does seem to run warmer than it should during the summer. It will get up to about 3/4 gauge before the cooling fan comes on and cools it down. I removed the thermostat but that didn't seem to help. I suspect that it may either have partially clogged radiator, or possibly even a blown headgasket. I would plan for the worst, hope for the best. The turbo makes good boost and sounds healthy. The boost is set around 14-15psi. I have noticed that when I get on it really hard and the boost is above 12 or 13psi, there seems to be some smoke in the rearview. This could indicate that the turbo is worn. The engine has several minor oil leaks, but nothing catastrophic. There is one or more engine mounts that are weak or broken, there is some vibration mostly at idle. The front swaybar bushings are bad and need replacement, last time I changed the oil, I noticed that one is missing. The previous owner put in a manual regulator that controls the wastegate to make the boost adjustable, but the installation is poor and should be redone or discarded altogether. The suspension sounds clunky, but this could be mostly due to the swaybar bushings. It handles well and rides good. The brakes are in decent shape best I remember, but the rear rotors have some slight warpage. The power windows, air conditioning, heat, power seats, and cruise control all work. If I remember correctly, one of the power lock solenoids does not work, and the power mirrors don't work either. The odometer hasn't worked since I have had the car. It shows 149k miles, I suspect it has around 200k. The cd player is an older Sony unit and sounds terrible, I would replace it if I kept the car. It has some aftermarket speakers that are also Sony if I remember correctly, I am not a fan and would replace those also. All things considered, this is a decent car. It would make a good parts car, restoration candidate, a daily driver with a little tlc, or a beater as is. I have described the car to the best of my ability and have made no attempt to hide anything from a prospective buyer. The car is sold in as is condition with no warranty expressed or implied. It is the bidders responsibility to inspect the car prior to auction close, not when the car is picked up or delivered. I am willing to deliver the car within 200 miles of central NC for free, $1.00 per mile thereafter up to 1000 miles. The reserve is set very low, I will not disclose how low so please don't ask.
